Many large modpacks just throw lots of mods together without much tweaking or tutorializing. In contrast, this modpack is designed to be a carefully customized overhaul of Minecraft, turning it into an open-world sandbox RPG with focused, semi-linear character progression and combat that freels frantic, difficult, fair, and satisfying.

Server setup guide

Use ATLauncher's built-in "Create Server" function to create a server pack. Test the server pack by running it locally. There may be a few libraries that need to be installed manually. It will tell you which libraries are needed in an error code popup window when you try to launch it. Adding those libraries can be done using the "Add Mods" button. You can also use this to customize your install with other server-sided mods if desired. After that, you can use the server pack normally.

Setup guide for newbies

This modpack (and almost all 1.20.1 modpacks) requires Java 17 (an older version of Java) to run. Vanilla Minecraft's launcher has this included when you install it, but most modpack launchers do not. The easiest way to fix this will vary based on your launcher.

The most popular launchers to play Modrinth modpacks right now are Modrinth Launcher and Prism Launcher.

Modrinth Launcher (download link at the top of this webpage) comes with a convenient way to download Java 17 in its Settings. Simply find "Java 17 Location" in settings and click "Install Recommended" to automatically download the correct binaries. Then, you should be able to launch SAP.

Prism Launcher, like Modrinth, allows Java 17 installation in Settings. Go to Settings > Java > Management > Download, then select Java 17. Select the most recent version from this menu (any listed source will work), then click "Download". Then, you should be able to launch SAP.

Most other launchers require manual installation of Java 17. Instructions can be found below for Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

Java 17 installation methods for launchers requiring a manual install are listed below.

How much RAM do I need?

For a Server:

  • I recommend 10 GB for a small server with 2-5 of your friends. I also recommend pre-generating your world using the included mod "Chunky" to ensure smooth performance when loading new chunks, though this is optional.
  • If you want to run a larger server, I would recommend starting at 12 GB and adding increments of 2 addition GB periodically to see if you get improved performance.
  • It is not recommended to just allocate as much RAM as you have available for a server, that strategy does not work well with Minecraft servers. Often, this will create tick lag if there is an excess of unused RAM. Incremental adjustments and testing are best, and everyone's server will be different.
  • If you do not want to have to think about all that, just use 16 GB for a larger server.

For a singleplayer world:

  • I recommend at least 6 GB, though this is certainly suboptimal. 8-10 GB is about optimal.
  • Many launchers will default users to 4 GB maximum ram allocation. The way you change this will vary based on your launcher.
  • SAP will tell you how much RAM you have allocated on the early loading screen. As of V7.4, the game will also warn you if you are below the minimum recommended amount when loading the main menu or a new world.
Known bugs and fixes
Bug Fix
Very rarely, loading a world will return the error "Invalid Player Data" or "Disconnected", returning the user to the multiplayer connect screen. To fix this, simply load the world again. There are no known instances of this bug being permanent.
Very rarely, generating a new world can cause a freeze without actually hanging or crashing. To fix this, re-launch the game. The world should load normally after this.
Rarely after casting spells, runes will not be detected in the player's inventory, making spells uncastable without spell infinity To fix this, drop the runes in your inventory and pick them up again.
Rarely, identical stackable items will not stack. To fix this, drop the items and pick them up again.

This pack follows a few core design principles that make it unique:

  1. You should be able to loot goblin through the whole game with almost no building, farming, or technology (if you really want to).
  2. All critical information should be easily obtainable in-game with quests and guides.
  3. Combat should feel quick, responsive, and satisfying.
  4. The game should be optimized for low-end devices.
  5. Every playthrough should feel unique.
  6. The default keybinds should be viewable with a key map, and have non-conflicting and intuitive binds.
  7. The pack should require zero additional setup or downloads after clicking the install button in your launcher.

A new world is recommended for this update but not strictly necessary. There are new structures added and minor world gen changes, but nothing that will cause world corruption.


New Additions:

Other Changes:

  • Enemies now have shorter i-frame window, making them easier to hit with high attack speed or weapons that fire multiple projectiles.
  • Huge buffs to the Marium's Soulslike Weaponry gun items, making them viable options for a ranged weapon build
  • Changes to cave generation to make surface caves go much deeper and longer
  • Changes to the names of some mobs and items to differentiate them from ones with identical names
  • Armor tweaks to common mobs to assist with early game
  • Camera sway no longer changes crosshair's position on vertical axis
  • Fog has been added back to water
  • Adjusted brightness levels in the Nether
  • Disabled some dynamic lighting due to performance issues in large structures
    • Player-held items still work as normal
  • Jade tooltip now dodges boss/raid bars
  • Jade tooltip no longer has icons by default (this feature was very buggy and not very useful)
  • Greatly reduced the amount of time Advancement Plaques will stay on screen
  • Reduced the number of bubble particles in bubble columns by 95%
    • This will massively reduce the noise and lag in Bathhouses
  • Reduced the amount of smoke emitted from campfires
    • This will help improve lag in villages
  • Changed default damage particle behavior to "rising" (was "has gravity")
    • This should improve damage particle visibility when fighting large mobs like bosses
  • In-world health bars now work properly with shaders enabled
  • Greatly improved default appearance of Euphoria-patched shaders
  • Disabled dynamic handheld lighting in default settings of pre-installed shaders (this prevents it from being rendered twice)
  • Added small menu enhancements with ModpackUtils

Warning: Gigantic update, not world-compatible with previous versions

      • Voidthing - Blink ability (middle click by default), extended reach (does not apply to weapons)
      • No Origin - No effect
  • Overhauled death
    • Dying now starts a countdown to respawning
    • Dying now only results in a random percentage of your items being taken, unless they are Soulbound
    • Dying now results in some of the player's XP being taken
  • Overhauled difficulty
    • Bosses are now significantly more difficult
    • Some enemies are now significantly more difficult, but scale based on what dimension they most commonly appear in
    • Melee weapon range improved across the board for shorter-range weapons
    • Player move speed increased while swinging melee weapons
    • Melee attack hitboxes now come out 50% faster
      • These changes should ensure more melee weapons are viable, rather than the longest-range ones just being objectively the best
  • Added Balanced Recall
    • Adds magic mirror, allowing a quick teleport back to your spawn point
  • Added a health gate mechanic, so if the player is above 12 hp they cannot die to to most damage that would otherwise be lethal, and will always survive on at least 1 hp. This also applies to fall damage.
    • Some magic attacks, such as Mine Cells boss boundaries, can bypass this.
  • The Nether has been COMPLETELY reworked:
    • Removed BetterNether
    • Removed Amplified Nether
    • Added Jaden's Nether Expansion
    • Added Nether Floating Islands
      • Falling in the void in the Nether teleports the player to y=350
      • Fall damage from this teleport is capped at 19
    • Added more nether structures
    • Added basic nether ores
  • Falling in the Void in The End now teleports the player to the Overworld sky
  • Falling out of the Overworld void (if you glitch your way out) now teleports the player back to y=350
  • Added Galosphere
    • Adds a new boss
    • Adds Cave biomes
    • Adds tons of fun new tech items and blocks
