On Ancient Ground

You open your eyes, and a worn world appears in front of you. Its rich past and now its future is for you to discover.

The purpose of this modpack is to create a highly unique experience, by combining mods never meant for each other and integrating them by hand, creating something special that is quite literally not seen anywhere else.

The wide horizontal progression means that there is always something to try to do, you can in a way just go with the flow, tend fields, mine, explore, survive the winter, build a nicer house, forge tools, trade, do stuff as you see it necessary.

There is much to discover, TFC's Overworld has great mountains, rivers, glaciers and even volcanic features such as calderas, craters and dome volcanoes! Underground there are a variety of ores to discover and rock types to build with. And what is even deeper? That is for you to find out :).

FaQ

Q: Game Version? A: The modpack is on Neoforge for version 1.21.1.

Q: How do I start off the game? A: In the inventory on the right side is the Terrafirmacraft guide book icon, in the getting started chapter it will explain how to start off. TLDR: pick up twigs and stones, knap two stones together in a shape to make a tool head to make a tool. A more intuitive custom guidebook is on the way.

Q: How to find recipes for items? A: You can press (U) to see an items Uses and (R) to see Recipes that result in the item. The search bar under your inventory allows you to search for any item.

Q: Where do I get support? A: For support you can join the Discord Server, you can also use the issues tab on the GitHub repository.This is subject to change but you can ping @_gourmand (me) on the discord server for now at least.

Q: How much RAM does the pack use? For single player 4GB is recommended, though how much you use can depend on your system and settings. If you are testing worldgen I’d recommend 5GB espacially if you can generating a lot of worlds.

Q: Is there an official server? A: While I (Gourmand) am a bit busy so I can’t spend a lot of time playing on and running a server, I could host one at some point (likely later this year, July-ish maybe?). If someone is setting up a server let me know as I am fine with making a list of public servers running the modpack.

Q: Is there lore? A: The basis for any lore would be from Spectum, any of the pack's lore would be an extension either on top or on the side of that: because of this i'm using this as a disclaimer to keep in mind that anything the pack does or will do, is not canon to Spectrum's lore.

Q: Is Generative AI used in this project? A: Not at all. This project is a labour of love, and the codebase while large is suprisingly simple, there is simply no use for it. These tools are clunky and faultly at best when dealing with KJS scripting and Minecraft modding specific Java code. This extends to assets, with original Krita and Blockbench documents available on the Github repository.

Q: What is Golden Horizons? A: Golden Horizons is the original version of the modpack (the 0.x and 1.x versions), with version 2.x the modpack was re-branded to On Ancient Ground. This used to be the page for Golden Horizons and the downloads still remains.

On Ancient Ground 2.0: Alpha 3

A big update, it was planned to be smaller and to do more frequent updates, but that doesn't seem to have happened lol.

Note: Survivor's Delight has replaced Farmers Delight TFC, unfortunately it doesn't yet support EMI when it modifies the cooking pot recipe view. Some recipes require fluids, which are not shown in EMI, this will be hopefully fixed soon.

TFC has had some big updates, loads of cool stuff (largely worldgen and nature), but that would take a week or two to make work with the pack, so this alpha hadn't updated yet.

Content

  • Added trial chambers, the loot, and even the block palette has seen changes!
  • Monster Rooms (AKA dungeons now generate in the overworld)
  • Added leaded glass.
  • The custom guide book is now accessable, but unfinished, i'd love to hear feedback!
  • Press the book icon in your inventory or "`" to open it, the TFC field guide can be accessed with "p" now.
  • Cakes from Create: Crafts & Additions and the TFC's cake are now make by baking a cake base.
  • Cookies from various mods are now made similarly to Firmalife's cookies (dough is baked in the oven)
  • Main Menu was redesigned. New title aswell.
  • Block variants such as stairs, slabs and walls have been hidden from EMI (a tooltip has been added to the "base" block of the set to show this)
  • You can craft stairs, slabs and walls within the 2x2 crafting grid.
  • Added leab bulbs, like copper bulbs, but fits the new block palette of trial chambers.
  • The hotbar selection is now red.
  • Edited the cloud texture.
  • Existing unused nuggets have been given new metals to represent.

Changes

  • Caupona's soups are now intended to be drank from a jug/glass bottle/etc, giving nutrition like milk does.
  • Farmers Delight TFC has been replaced with Survivor's Delight.
  • Removed Astikor Carts mod (the TFC addon has performance concerns, and the base mod turns out to have compatibility issues with's stuff, might be reconsidered later)
  • Spectrum's Decay Away now creates aridisol instead of dirt.
  • Removed crushed terracotta (it wasn't obtainable anymore anyways, its use was replaced by terracotta veins)
  • Nature sounds are now quieter.
  • Changed bundle recipe to use raw hides inefficently, and leather efficently.
  • Map Atlas recipe changed, you can now create atlases of different map scales.
  • Mod to customise fog was replaced with another.
  • You can now craft wolf statues.
  • Malachite now generates in more rocks types
  • Custom ore blocks have proper mining tiers.
  • Custom gravel blocks can no longer be mined with a pickaxe....
  • Meteors are less common.
  • Fixed various rock type's world gen features.
  • Removed boiled water, its use to give regen for a bit has been broken for a while. Something similar might replace it.
  • Quark's framed glass blocks are now craftable.
  • A few items were added to the sweetener tag.
  • Various item textures were remade.
  • The spices tag was added to (Firmalife spices were added), and are split into sweet and savoury spices, depending on the recipe.
  • Blueschist now has "low grade" metamorphic rocks under it.

On Ancient Ground 2.0: Alpha 2

A lot of stuff has gotten done, the pack is definitely shaping up well. I reckon that there this might be the last or second last alpha, afterwards there will be a beta or two with largely back end changes and the guide book work I want to make.

Warning: A lot of Ids changed, meaning dissappearing blocks and items, there is not much I can do. Only reason I felt like getting away with this is the alpha status of the pack, changes like this pretty much won't happen again. The major change is the switch from Pastel to Spectrum, breaking all preservation ruins, geodes and some naturally occuring plants. Anthracite, bauxite and ceramic bricks blocks for custom clay types also had their block id change.

Content

Added New Rock Types

The last of the new rock types. They all generate in the overworld.

  • Sandstone (Create's ochrum)
  • Red Sandstone (Quark's jasper)
  • Arkose (Quark's limestone)
  • Phonolite (Quark's shale)
  • Suevite (Create's scorchia)
  • Soapstone (Create's limestone)

Ores

  • Meteoric Iron, rare find, generation to be tweaked with time. The ore can be refined like a iron bloom. Comes with Suevite rock.
  • Soapstone, a rare ore/rock found anywhere in metamorphic rocks. Currently only has decorational purposes.
  • Terracotta layers added as an "ore" in every rock type. Let your imagination build what it wants to build!
  • Anthracite veins have reduced in size.
  • Anthracite can now substitute charcoal in bloomeries.
  • Ores should now generate consistently in all rock types.
  • Ore deposits and hot springs included ^.

General

  • Argillite and travertine now generate on the surface.
  • Map atlases are much cheaper to make and use. Just need some glue and a way to get black dye.
  • The tinting on molten glass blocks and fluid had changed to be more accurate to glass blocks.
  • The texture of vanilla amethyst has been changed to distingush it from the non-magical amethyst ore from TFC.
  • The texture of bedrock and associated textures have changed to contrast less with the surroundings.
  • Optional TFCgenViewer support (just add the mod and rocks should have their right colours!).
  • Added alternative tinted glass recipe using molten glass blocks.
  • Less unobtainable vanilla items should show up in tags while searching recipes.
  • Removed Deco buckets as their workaround is no longer needed (see next point)
  • All stair recipes now use 3 blocks for 4 stairs. (can be done without crafting table)
  • Added a few custom splash texts. (custom splash text and tips suggestions always welcome!)
  • Glass loottables should be fixed.
  • Bark to paper removed. (has been broken for a while, needs to be revisited)
  • Heat capacities for metal powders reduced to make more sense.
  • New title, so it doesn't look like "Ancient On Ground" lol.
  • You can recover metal from more Create & Addons' items.
  • Many Create & Addons' items now use TFC mechanics to craft.
  • Tweaks to main and options menus.
  • Some decorative stone blocks from Create had their names and recipes changed as they more resembled another TFC rock type. (Cut Granite -> Cut Chert, Cut Andesite -> Cut Dacite, etc).

Spectrum spoilers.

  • Prismatic Ice and Sludge allow for getting liquid crystal and sludge without a bucket in the recipe.
  • Adjusted spawns of quitoxic reeds and mermaids brush. Found in warmer (>14C) and colder (<10C) regions in most freshwater sources. (keep in mind that the reeds need a mud block underneath to generate)
  • Gemstone powder blocks now landslide.
  • Fixes to various Spectrum recipes such as some memory recipes,
  • The ranges of geodes in the overworld has changed to be wider, they no longer generate at/under the ocean.
  • Blackslag can rarely appear as a basement rock, right above the bedrock.

On Ancient Ground 2.0: Alpha 1

Many changes have happened since last time, mainly the port to 1.21.1 and TFC v4 as well as a rebrand. This is a work on progress, it is stable and somewhat tested. Its being uploaded so that people can finally play the pack, and report any bugs they may find.

  • Added Galena, an ore for lead,
  • Added Bauxite, an ore that can be ground into kaolinite powder, found in sedimentary rocks.

  • There is now only one variant of Astikor Carts' carts as Astikor Carts TFC was removed.
  • Quark backpack recipe was gated behind Pastel.
  • Pastel's clovers now generate in TFC's Overworld.

  • Added olive pomace as fuel.
  • Disabled by default, and experimental, feature where certain ores can rarely spawn poisonous dust clouds when broken.

Golden Horizons 1.11

I might want for this to be a "long term support" release, where it will get patches over time as bugs are found and so on. Its mostly as I don't really have the time for larger stuff, I will slowly continue the Spectrum integration and other misc things. BTW if there is anybody willing to contribute to the modpack feel free to ask on Discord. If there are any road blocks I can try my best to resolve them.

Changes

  • Added Wrought Iron buckets, capable of carrying lava (but not any other molten/hazardous fluid).
  • You can make a snow shovel out of stainless steel, it can mine a 3x3x3 area of snow.
  • Buckets can how be placed decorationally. (this is to circumvent a TFC feature that makes it hard to use normal buckets in recipes)
  • The bucket requirments in Spectrum recipes are more reasonable.
  • The Spectrum "Creating Life" chapter should be now be largly possible.
  • Vanilla chains can now be made, which are required by Create for package transport.
  • Create mod's transmitter is now cheaper.
  • Ores now can be isolated like raw stone and drop as ore blocks.
  • Food items that are made from meat items are noe more consistent with what they should accept.
  • Added snow bricks.

Fixes

  • Beacons now fully function.. assuming you can manage the long journey to get one.
  • Fixed the dead glistering melon crop models.
  • Fixes to misc warnings/errors in logs.
  • Quarks hotbar changer is enabled.
  • Detected set block be gone mod was added to stop the log from being spammed when in the Deeper Down.
  • Kaolinite brick has the correct texture now.
  • Custom malachite (Spectrum) ores now have revelations.
  • Advancements optimiser had its cooldown reduced, meaning advancements should be more responsive.
  • A clay dupe by using deployers to make unfired items and then recycling that back into clay.

Enjoy

Will be going abroad soon, Silksong has released and its going great so far, and school is getting pretty difficult. The beta for TFC 1.21 just got announced and once enough TFC addons update (probably for the alpha or standard release versions is my guess) ill start on porting the pack, but my time is a bit limited as I mentioned at the start of the paragraph. XD.

Golden Horizons 1.10

This is a largely QoL update, mods that fill in some niches like trading, automation and inventory management. A lot of Spectrum's core content was been integrated, and it is possible to go through its entire "main" progression now. (certain features still need a lot of work. like memories & mob heads.).

New Content

  • Lithic Coins has been added, it allows you to mint coins out of any metal with features like designs, year minted, and basic security. Very hard, but not impossible to counterfeit.
  • Toolbelt was added, it adds a toolbelt that can store tools which you can easily cycle through to save on inventory space.
  • Create: Mechanical Extruder was added, allowing you to automate the production of Ingeous rocks, though with Extrusive Igneous rock taking far longer to form.
  • Create mod propellers are now made with stainless steel. (want feedback on this, I feel gating it )
  • Mods have been updated (Terrafirmacraft, Firmalife, Artisanal, Water Flasks, Immersive Aircraft, Modernfix & a few more)

Spectrum integration

  • You can now make supports out of Spectrum's wood types
  • The Glisterng Melon crop now acts like any other TFC crop.
  • The quern can now grind Spectrum gemstones into powder.
  • Blocks that hold fluid now work with TFC fluid containers.
  • Amaranth can be ground into flour which can be used to preserve it and is now used in place of grains in many recipes.
  • Anvil crushing will have a rework that has been started, but not finished.
  • The Deeper Down is now considered "playable", its world generation has had many changes to better fit into TFC (including making it possible for collapses to happen!) Such as:
  • Loose rock and twigs spawn in the Deeper Down.
  • Wild Amaranth now generates in the Crystal Gardens.
  • Aloe and Sawblade Berry bushes have TFC like variants that generate replacing the old ones.
  • Ores now generate (but inside of geodes, usually made of hardened basalt or schist).

Bug Fixes

  • Added some items to tags and made certain recipes use tags (unfired vessels, etc)
  • leather straps from Epic Knights and Sack n Such have been unified.

Enjoy

There might be a 1-2 month gap (usually just one) in updates, though I will try to release bug fixes if something comes up. Ill start to get less time for making the pack from late August onwards. The next update will probably just have a custom guide book I want to make aswell as small changes and fixes.

Golden Horizons 1.9

After this update the mod list is nearly finalised. I am thinking of setting up a Java profiler and seeing if anything uses more RAM than is worth it. The integration of Spectrum is going well, I wouldn't recommend going to its dimension yet since I dont have hardened stone and collapses to working properly but almost everything else is ready.

New Content

  • Rustic Delight was added, allowing you to make many new food items using existing items like peppers and calamari. (and ingredients for batter, which can be used for pancakes!)
  • Create has been updated to version 6, some recipes were edited to be more reasonable. (given vaults are made from blue steel and were used in some recipes.)
  • Rustic Delight adds two crops, which has been given the TFC crop treatment. You can find Cotton in warm and medium-rainfall areas and Coffee in warm and dry areas.
  • When placing cobblestone with mortar in your off-hand or by right-clicking it with mortar, you can mortar the cobblestone meaning it no longer landslides. (it still collapses like raw stone.)
  • Create mod windmills and water wheels are now craftable, and usable, just place the waterwheels in the river the same as you would with TFC ones, (and not like you normal do with Create waterwheels).
  • Aluminium can now to made, by charging "raw aluminium mixture" which is made from kaolinite and redstone. This aluminium is used for aircraft.
  • You can now craft honeycomb, should allow a few more building blocks and a few recipes to be made.
  • You now use Firmalife's beeswax instead of honeycomb to wax copper blocks.
  • [CHANGE] Hammering of blooms and weak steel is now done with presses since Vintage Improvements has not updated.

Spectrum Integration

  • Spectrum's wooden blocks now craft into and use lumber like in TFC.
  • Amaranth has been made into a proper TFC like crop.
  • The stone types found in the dimension act like other TFC stones, having cobblestone and loose rocks and so on.
  • These stone types also had some of their names changed: Vanilla stone -> Argillite Deepslate -> Nephelinite Dripstone -> Travertine Basal Marble -> Picrite Basalt
  • Enchanter had some obsolete enchantments removed.
  • Spectrum's structures should use TFC blocks when applicable. (some vanilla blocks just drop TFC variants, such as flowers since TFC's barely bloom.)
  • The dimensions worldgen was slightly adapted to use TFC blocks (stone blobs use TFC stones and the hard-coded large ore veins had their block swapped.)

Golden Horizons 1.8

This update sees a good few random bits and bobs, mostly from mod updates. The beginning of the TFC x Spectrum compatibility has been implemented, Spectrum's early to mid-game should be fully accessable (keep in mind that the ores are a bit tricky to find). No compatibility other than recipes has been made to the lategame, while "the place" is accessable I havn't touched it at all. Some minor nitpicks also need to be sorted out with Spectrums earlygame. Create v6 in the modpack is on the horizon, Create Big Cannons just released a beta release that is compatible.

I'm considering making a public Trello board for ideas and concepts, aswell as tracking certain features. Any thoughts? I don't think I can make the board items publically editable but ping me and I can make a suggestion item for you, plus it means you don't need a Trello account.

New content

  • Spectrum's worldgen features are now seen in the world, watch out for mysterious rocks and basalt spheres!
  • Almost full recipes compatibility for Spectrum with TFC, most recipe types were checked over.
  • Added Architects Palette and made all its recipes compatible.
  • Reworked how to get polished and brick blocks from other mods and vanilla. (considering making it an in-world interaction?)
  • Loot table auto compatibility script, this might have been the hardest part of adding structures: making sure players didn't get vanilla items instead of TFC ones.
  • New hand-drawn modpack icon.
  • Fixed a few misc recipes like for cannon parts, that were unobtainable or missing.
  • Added TFC music support to Now Playing (it shows the right name and artist)
  • I want feedback on this, Vanilla music (only C418 tracks) has been added as a uncommon track to play instead of just having the 4 same TFC tracks playing. Menu Music is the same (except for a little secret).
  • Updated TFC Artisanal, did some minor additions to its new content.
  • Updated Simple Voice Radios, this is a large update and the create themed resource pack has been removed since it was for a much older version of the mod. (I might try to make something similar.)

Golden Horizons 1.7

This release sees a pretty big changes in the modpack, the Aether X TFC compatibiity has been abandoned due to technical issue probably within the Aether or Addon, or other mods in the modpack. Technical/backend changes have also occured. Due to (ironically) greater stability Im thinking of doing TFC compatibility with Spectrum. Spectrum and the mods needed for it are included in this update so that people can report any issues earlier.

New content

  • EMI info tabs have been added for a large amont of items, every stone type, ore, gem, metal, and crops have a info page.
  • Create casings are now made with Firmalife treated wood blocks.
  • Updated modpack textures.
  • Aluminium is now refined from kaolinite, it is used for aircraft. (Changes to make kaolin easier to find might come soon).
  • Custom clay types have better compatibility in recipes now.
  • Vintage improvement is a create addon with various new recipes types, they have been integrated into the modpack with more to come.
  • Small tweaks to game menu. (removed a button from main menu, and pause menu, and added a few icons).
  • You can now boil water! There is no penalty to drinking "dirty" water. Boiled water gives you regeneration for 10 seconds (liable to change) when drunk from a jug.
  • Create splashing recipe to turn gravel and sand into minerals have been rebalanced.
  • Recipes types that are not used, or self explanitary (Example. Automated shaped crafting is just crafting, again, in another recipe tab) were removed from view (they still exist in the game).
  • Recipes for terracotta shingles and bricks were changed.
  • A greeting message to the player, when they join a world has been added. (a way to make this optional might come soon)
  • Jade no longer shows how much health a mob has, for immersion, PVP and other reasons.
  • A large amount of the modpacks scripts now use common values and functions, this makes it easier to write scripts for the modpacks development.
  • I have done no benchmarking so take with with a grain of salt, but performance may have improved after removing Aether + Addons.
