Deep in the blocky multiverse of Origins Minecraft, is a land called Equestria. In this land, four legged creatures roam, capable of extraordinary feats of strength and ability.
This datapack mod replaces all the vanilla origins with origins specifically from the world of Equestria. Expand your gameplay with the unique abilities and features of these four legged creatures.
Requires Origins v1.10.0 and Apugli. Recommended to have either Figura or Customizeable Player Models for your player model. Custom FoV mod set to Vanilla Only, or disabled FoV highly recommended (technical limitation in Origins). Note, this mod replaces the vanilla Origins, with some Pony Origins providing similar gameplay functionality to the default Origins.
Due to Apugli only working with Origins v1.10.0 and older, Pony Origins has a lightweight version to remove this dependency, while Pony Origins 3.0 is replacing Apugli with Sync and Origins: Math. Please stand by while we do so. Pony Origins 3.0 is still in development and will be for 1.20.1.
Creating/Converting Pony Skins to Figura

Modpack / Server Makers who Still Want to Enable Vanilla Origins
If you really, really want to have vanilla Origins as well, you will have to manually edit the mod, but that's easy. Edit the following line in data/origins/origin_layers/origin.json: "replace": true, with "replace": false,
and repack the jar. Again, this is unsupported, most vanilla origins have Pony Origins equivalents, and they might break some interactions, but I did a best effort to come up with a system that will still cater to non-pony origins.
A test server is now open, if you want to help test the mod. Download this modpack and connect to the server saved in the list.
Pony Origins R&D Discord is now open to users.
Installation:
- Install Fabric
- Install Origins
- Install Apugli
- (Recommended) Install Figura and/or Customizeable Player Models
- (Optional) Install Custom FoV
- Install Pony Origins
Configuration Required:
On the first boot, you need to enter Options, Controls, Key Binds, and bind a key to Origins, Active Power (Secondary). [h] is a good key to use.
Then, enter Options, Accessibility Settings, and turn FOV Effects to Off. Alternately, install Custom FoV, and in Options, Accessibility Settings, set FOV Effects to Vanilla Only.
Finally, either use your MLP Figura avatar, or upload a minecraft skin compatible with Customizeable Player Models for your player model.
Playable Species:
Earth Pony: The most common pony of Equestria, earth ponies are extraordinarly strong, and have the natural ability Flora, which allows them to grow planted seeds into plants with their mind. Beware, ponies are all herbivores, and might get sick from eating meat, but ponies can eat most vegetation directly, and with an earth pony's ability to rapidly grow food, this won't be a problem. Most quadrupeds, and all ponies, are rideable by others. In addition, all ponies can choose one of many additional Talents.
Unicorn: The second most powerful pony species in Equestria, able to choose almost every Talent available. Unicorns choose two Talents, and can mix and match abilities to have a unique powerset and playstyle. As unicorns have Telekinesis, they are able to reach further with objects they are holding, and don't suffer from any speed penalties when holding items, as they instinctively float what they are holding in their Telekinesis.
Pegasus: The mobility species, pegasi are home to Equestria's skies. Although slightly less sturdy than average, pegasi make up for it by being able to fly. However, wings require space on either side, and a pegasus in tight quarters may find skyward escape impossible. The upside is, flight allows easy mobility to places other species would have difficulty reaching.
Zebra: A culturally distinct species similar to earth ponies, Zebras come from a continent across the Celestia Sea. Zebras have the natural ability to use various dusts (such as redstone, blaze powder, glowstone, and so on) to perform elemental attacks or abilities.
Goat: A mundane citizen of Equestria, Goats make up for their smaller size by being able to climb most vertical surfaces, and can use their horns to ram into things with minimal damage to themselves.
Bison: A mundane citizen of Midwest Equestria, Bison have the strength of an Earth Pony, but are more resistant to the cold and can take the Charge ability, using their horns to ram their opponent.
Yak: An exceptionally strong and hardy species from the cold climate of Yakyakistan, Yaks don't need Talents to be strong. Their bodies are immune to the cold, and they can kick extra hard to SMASH their opponents across the land, or STOMP the ground to send nearby aggressors skyward.
Seapony: An underwater sea creature related to the ponies of Equestria, seaponies live in the water. As a waterborn species, they see well underwater, swim with ease, and suffer almost no penalty to mining in the water. All seaponies come equipped with a shard of the Pearl of Transformation, which allows the seapony to change into an earth pony upon exiting the water. Seaponies are pescavores, and gain more nutrition from eating fish at the expense of less nutrition from non-fish meals, and may get sick eating land creature meat. Like land ponies, seaponies have a selection of Talents they can choose one from.
Deer: A forest creature sometimes seen in and around Equestria, Deer are light like goats, have the earth affinity of Earth Ponies, but the abilities of a Unicorn, able to choose most Talents. Their antlers provide telekinesis as well as additional helmet armor hardness when wearing a helmet.
Umbrum: A species of shadow creatures, the umbrum resemble unicorns in appearance, but are not herbivores, nor do they choose two Talents. Instead, umbrum have the Shadow Walk ability, which lets them become shadow and phase through walls, as long as it is dark enough. Umbrum are stronger and deadlier in the darkness, but become weaker in bright light. As expected, umbrum have night vision.
Kirin: Half unicorn, half dragon, kirin are a unique species with a special ability. As a kirin takes damage, their inner rage builds. When it reaches a certain level, or if the kirin decides to let it out, the kirin will become a nirik, a burning creature that sets everything on fire in may different ways. Naturally, kirin are fireproof in Nirik form, but the surrounding area typically isn't. Nirik mode stays on until all the rage is out. As kirin are partly covered in dragonscale, kirin take reduced damage as long as it's not armor piercing. Kirin are herbivores.
Thestral: The night pony species, home to equestria's caves. Thestrals, also known as batponies, are uniquely Frugivore - they eat fruits in particular, and gain more nutrition than average from them, but don't gain as much nutrition from other foods. Thestrals have night vision, which automatically adapts to dark environments without needing to do anything. Thestrals have wings that don't get waterlogged, which makes water landings less dangerous, but these membraneous wings are more susceptible to injury, so take good care of them.
Griffon: Half eagle, half lion, all predator. Griffons are the flying species geared for fighting. With talons, they are never truly defenseless, as they can attack unarmed and deal damage. Griffons are carnivores, and require meat in their diet to remain healthy. Able to fly on muscle alone, griffons have more versatility than pegasi, but give up access to special Talents unique to ponies. In addition, creepers are afraid of the catlike appearance of the griffons.
Hippogriff: Half osprey, half pony, hippogriffs are the frendlier predator. They share similar stats with griffons, but unique to hippogriffs, they have waterproof feathers, allowing them to take off from water landings without difficulty. This is important, as hippogriffs are Pescavores, requiring them to hunt for fish. Hippogriffs can choose to be Waterborn, where they are equipped with a Pearl of Transformation, and thus, become a seapony when they jump into the water.
Dragon: A four legged dragon, dragons are an unstoppable force. Fireproof, very resistant to non-armor-piercing damage, and able to fly, dragons are the first taste in a versatile, powerful species, with a powerset that includes both winged flight, strong defenses, and special abilities. Dragons have an internal flame that must be kept warm, but can purge it out by breathing fire. Unlike other species, dragons are uniquely Lithovores, meaning they eat gemstones. Other kinds of food turn to ash in their digestive system, and they get minimal nutrition from organic foods, as well as ignoring any side effects, good or bad. Instead, dragons get their buffs from eating certain gems, which provide most of their nutrition, and some heat as well. Beware, cold environments and water can slow the regeneration of heat, and even suck it away. Dragons with no heat move slowly. Dragons have night vision, and their heavy digger limbs allow them to dig into and mine natural rock and stone without tools.
Changeling: An insectoid species with the vague appearance of a pony. Changelings are uniquely Amorevores, which don't get nutrition from eating food at all. Changelings feed of love by using living creatures or other players, draining their health (npc) or hunger (pc) to feed. Tamed creatures and players are more nutritious, but enemies can't be fed from. Changelings have insectoid wings that, while resilient against damage, are slower to fly with and do not work at all in the wet. They also have night vision. Changelings are an advanced species to play, and only recommended for players who want the challenge.
- Changedling
An insectoid species with the vague appearance of a pony. Changedlings are the final evolution of a Changeling, having survived by receiving love from others, instead of taking it by feeding. Becoming a Changedling requires multiplayer interaction as a Changeling, by convincing other players to repeatedly feed them. Once a Changeling has received sufficient love, it will automatically evolve once it feeds another Changeling. Changedlings are omnivores, eating the same diet as Humans, are not as weak as Changelings, and have a larger set of abilities available to them. Changedling will be available with a Harmonic Resonator once unlocked, but if you choose Changeling afterwards, you will lose the option until you evolve again.
- Alicorn
A legendary combination of all three main pony species, Alicorns are almost as resilient as earth ponies, fly like pegasi, and have the choice of almost any one Talent, like unicorns. Alicorns have an exclusive choice of more powerful versions of many Talents. In order to become an Alicorn, a pony must first master all three pony species, then be the first to perform an extraordinary achievement. Once completed, they will automatically ascend to Alicorn. Alicorn will be available with a Harmonic Resonator once unlocked.
- Chaos
Complete Minecraft's Hardest Advancement to unlock Chaos Creature. This creature's features and powers are completely randomized on creation and respawn. Your Talent will change every time you use it. Due to technical limitations in Origins, you may not be able to see what powers and stats you have rolled, so you will have to figure that out as you play. Chaos Creature is a very advanced species that is difficult to play as due to the nonsensical randomness that you receive. Chaos Creature will be available with a Harmonic Resonator once unlocked.
Several Bipedal species from the world of Equestria are included. While their abilities are limited, they have unique playstyles around their natural advantages, and being bipedal, can equip items without hindrance and travel longer distances on the same amount of food.
Abyssinian: Anthropomorphic cats from the land south of Equestria, Abyssinians are nimble and light. A carnivorous species, they come equipped with night vision, sharp claws, and the ability to land anywhere without taking fall damage. Due to their appearance, Abyssinians are feared by creepers. Abyssinians can wallclimb as well, and walk around relatively silently.
Orinthian: Flightless anthropomorphic parrots from the land of Orinthia. These creatures are herbivores, but lack the ability to directly eat vegetation. Their light bodies allow them to fall slowly to the ground, preventing fall damage, and their taloned hands give them an advantage in unarmed combat.
Minotaur: A bull with beefy arms, minotaur have similar stats to the Bison, but have the punching strength of a professional boxer, with a super punch ability similar to the Yaks.
Diamond Dog: Best described as a cross between a prairie dog and a canine, diamond dogs are seen throughout the subterranean areas of Equestria. Their claws are able to dig through rock and stone with ease, and deal significant damage unarmed. Diamond Dogs are carnivores, naturally gifted with night vision.
Human: Minecraft Steve? Alex? plays the same as vanilla. If you really want to just be a standard human, click one to the left, and ponder why you've downloaded Pony Origins.
Don't like the species you first chose and want to change? Craft a Harmonic Resonator by surrounding a Nether Star with diamonds and amethyst shards in the crafting table, then use the Harmonic Resonator to change to a new species with new talents.
Note for Modmakers and Modpackmakers: You already have permission because 0BSD license. Integrate it and have fun.

The Wet Advancements Update
Several issues with Advancements and swimming have been fixed with this update:
- Removed Running On Water, as it was breaking due to bugs
- Added flowing_water to water detection in several powers
- Cleaned up the function installer to reduce the number of files
- Reworked how stats are tracked and initialized for advancements
Now, when you choose an EUP species, the advancement tracker will take into account your already accumulated stats, meaning you have to get that flight / running / trading etc. time done as that species. Previously, the system tried to "reset" the stats, but that doesn't actually work. Now it is working as intended.

Pony Origins 2.0 had some unseen issues post-release, so here's some fixes:
- Added function to re-calc weights after Ascensions
- Fixed Umbrum having no skin type defined
- Fixed some Weight calcs missing or inaccurate
- Optimized some Weight if-trees
- Fixed Cloven Hooves, Hooves and Canine Paws incorrectly applying some stats twice and ignoring some others
- Fixed Feline Paws not correctly determining when silent footsteps are supposed to work
- Updated icon to have the data pack version on it
Rebalanced some parts:
Membrane wings are 1 heavier
Frugivore diet is 2 lighter
Thestrals now have fur, so they are a little better protected against the cold (except their wings, which aren't). They weigh the same as pegasi still, thanks to being Frugivores.
Dragons are 1 heavier as a result.
Fixed the forge version information being wrong (Origins Forge is still unsupported currently)
The release version is now split between Mod and Datapack versions, as there is no way to intelligently serve either one from a single listing.

The Modular Update
Pony Origins has reached the 2.0! This update packs in a lot of features and changes! You will have to leave and re-join your server or open, exit, open again your single player save.
What's New
- Modular Creature Features
- Each creature is now the sum of its parts - body type, legs, wings, horns, and skin - all affect stats
- A weight system adds variable stats to creatures based on the above.
- Body type and base girth affect weight, health, movement speed, fall damage
- Diet type affects weight
- Leg type affects weight, movement speed over different types of terrain, and unarmed melee knockback or damage
- Wing type affects exposure to environmental hazards and flight capabilities in different scenarios
- Skin type affects exposure and resistance to different types of hazards and endurance
- Horn type affects weight as well as the damage taken and dealt when ramming with the Charge ability
- Balanced around Human, who's stats are unchanged from Vanilla except when standing unclothed in a snowstorm
- Added and accounted for many body types that aren't currently used as well (for a future expansion)
- Expanded the VAPS to include variable setting for the above modular powers - dynamically loaded powers set up the required variables used by various powers, then remove themselves automatically. This reduces the amount of active powers each origin uses during normal gameplay.
- Added Bison, an alternative to Yak with better warm climate adaptability but without the signature YAK SMASH moves
- Added Deer, a lightweight alternative to Unicorn, with Earth Pony's Flora as a Primary Talent
- Added Charge talent, which allows a horned creature to charge at an opponent with high speed running and deal heavy damage. Different horn types will cause different amounts and kinds of damage and knockback. WARNING: Most horn types will cause extreme damage to the user if ramming a solid object!
- Hazards for everyone!
- Flappy noises when flying, dependent on wing type
- Non-human creatures can shake off water/snow/oil that's accumulated on their bodies by getting clear of exposure and standing still for a couple seconds.
- Creatures that have been hit with and survive Talent attacks will now be aggro'ed to the player
- Spectrum advancements are now supported for Make Your Mark advancements (Alicorn progression)
- Creatures with the right leg type that weigh less than human can now sprint across the top of water as long as they don't slow down.
- Creatures with specific hind leg types now have a sprinting or crouching jump boost.
What's Changed
- Tags are heavily reworked, with "compatibility" tags added that add the new tags used in Minecraft 1.21
- Lots of 1.20.1 modded items are now supported in tags
- Backend changes to prepare for Minecraft 1.21, such as depluralizing the folder names
- Simplified a lot of descriptions for powers, to reduce file sizes
- All instances of "race" and "races" are changed to "species" or "tribe(s)" where appropriate. While "race" is more correct in a lot of cases due to how Equestrian genetics works, in 2025 the connotation is too distracting an issue to leave older language like this.
- Consolidation of a lot of powers - this reduces complexity with duplicate power files, and makes room for the Modular powers
- Many bug fixes for minor problems
- Sorted the Origins selection, to move Human to the left of the first origin, which is now Earth Pony.
- Origins are sorted as follows - Earth Pony, Unicorn, Pegasus, alternatives to EP, alternatives to U, alternatives to P, overpowered quadrupeds, bipeds
- Hazards affect flight speed variably - more contamination means slower flight
- Wearing armor can reduce contamination increase and decrease
- Burns from taking damage while on fire will diminish cold resistance on certain skin types
- Dragons now have Nightvision
- Dragons have digger limbs now and extra health, which makes them the slowest fliers due to being the heaviest creatures
- Dragons' Heat is now contained in the Lithovore diet power instead, as that is the core of the Heat mechanic
- Digger limbs allow mining natural stone as well as digging faster through dirt and sand when unarmed
- Emotivore is now called Amorevore, to distinguish it from other Emotivore-type diets
- Amorevores (Changelings) can "sense" food when hungry, which works even through walls
- Amorevore feeding mechanics have been greatly simplified, and now only take the minimum amount of food per click
- Amorevores can no longer feed on hostile creatures
- Goats now have 9 hearts and are herbivores. While the meme of goats being organic garbage compactors is funny, the reality is, they're just hungry hungry herbivores
- Fructivore is now correctly named Frugivore. Biology majors everywhere rejoice.
- Rebalanced Chaos talent, it now selects "fireworks" and "sound" less often
- Wingstrikes (hitting terrain when flying) do 0.001 damage. This is almost imperceptible amounts of damage that doesn't affect survivability, but it is enough to trigger the hurt effects and cause even more panic for flying creatures that like to fly too close to walls.
- Rose Bushes and Sunflowers are no longer edible in-world, due to a dupe glitch. Break and eat these things normally.
- Origin icons for many species have been updated to better match the creature.
- Kirin's Nirik power has been simplified under the hood. It should function the same as always.
- Rocket Dash cooldown is fixed, so dying and respawning after changing Origin during the post-collision cooldown won't permanently disable flight anymore.
- Shock Ray fires every tick. This doesn't change much beyond the increase in energy consumption.
- Umbrum Shadow Walk reworked, to improve utility. Energy drain is lower, especially when phasing, though the ability to see when phasing through solid matter is severely nerfed. Umbrum will no longer run out of air when shadow walking through unbreathable material, nor will an intangible shadow get dirty with contamination either.
What's Removed
- No more "you" in descriptions. All descriptions now use third person.
- Humans no longer get Talents. If you're playing this mod in singleplayer and you choose Human... what's the point of this again?
- Firecracker will no longer shoot "creeper" pattern fireworks. This was necessary to reduce file size.
- Most Alicorn, all Stamina, and all Unicorn power files are removed. Their functionality is consolidated in the normal version of these talents' powers, which saves a lot of file size and complexity, virtually eliminating duplicate code.
- Spatium Pontis (Alicorn Teleport). Normal Teleport is already OP and already requires Distant Horizons or an absurd draw distance to use.
- Waterborn no longer spawns in the Ocean. As cool as it was to have this, if a world didn't have an Ocean nearby to spawn, it could completely hang the game.
Known Issues
- Charge is slightly jank, and doesn't always register a collision on terrain. It is currently unknown why.
- Many mods with "oil" fluids either don't register their oil as a fluid or set it as a water type, which can't be fixed in Pony Origins.
- Hurt sounds overlay on normal hurt sounds. This is a minecraft limitation.
- Apugli has been Archived. This makes it a defunct mod, and puts Pony Origins and any modpacks it relies on in a bit of a bind, as it relies on Apugli for many things that won't work natively in Origins 1.10.x and older.

The High Performance Update
The latest Update to Pony Origins has arrived!
The code has been refactored in a lot of places, reducing file size and complexity, all in the name of performance! Because of the refactoring, your origins may be broken. Enter the world or server, leave, then enter again. If this doesn't fix it, you will have to reset your origin via command or via the Harmonic Resonator item.
What's New:
- Advancement Progress Bars!
- As Minecraft Advancements don't track scoreboard objectives, I've designed a system whereby resource bars temporarily appear whenever you make progress towards an advancement.
- Emotisense!
- Changelings can now sense (visible red glow) creatures they can feed on whenever they're hungry.
- Changelings know where you are when they are nearby. You can't hide from the hungry changelings...
- Variable Advancement Power System
- Advancement-checking powers are now dynamically loaded when they are applicable to you, which cuts down on the number of checks per second.
What's Changed:
- Many powers have been rewritten for better simplicity and performance, such as reducing the use of power condition checks on action over time condition checks and triggers, as power condition checks are checked every tick or every time the power's active state is checked
- All unicorn/ talents have been removed, and are now just the talents/ talents. The checks that determine which power key to use can already check if it's a primary or secondary talent, which saves a lot of code complexity
- Flight hazards were given a rewrite to reduce complexity. This changes how hazards both build and clear.
- When waterlogged, freezing, and oilbogged, you now have to stop moving so you can shake off the water and oil (which clears faster now)
- Water will slowly drip dry if you are constantly moving
- Waterlogging takes a little bit longer now, as the last 10 percent of waterlogging is much slower than the first 90 percent (slows in stages)
- Feathered wings is a new power, specifically made to reduce code overhead (if wings == feathered is way faster to check than if wings != three other wing types)
- Further optimizations may come later
- Smash attacks (YAK SMASH, Minotaur Punch, Alicorn Mighty Hoof) are now a hold to charge, release to fire ability. Alicorn Mighty Hoof uses energy instead of stamina
- Emotivore (Changeling diet) has been refactored, and no longer has a variable amount of food drain. While this was a nice click-saving feature, it unfortunately ballooned the feeding logic and caused a lot of extra complexity headaches.
- Emotivores feed much faster now, but only gain the smallest increment of food per feeding. This also means both love and taint build faster.
- Emotivores now only feed on creatures with love (meaning they haven't attacked / been targetted for attack recently, and aren't a hostile mob)
- Emotivores can feed off of changelings (must be standing)
- Emotivores with love can feed other changelings (must be sneaking)
- Emotivores riding requires being full of food first (if there's a better way to do all this, I would like to know)
- Emotivores feeding and being fed require using an empty mainhand
- Feeding an Emotivore requires sneaking
- Emotivores feeding another changeling when love is full will give all their love to the other changeling
- Added lots more modded items and blocks to tags, improving up-to-dateness of food and crops supported
- Lithovores' golden apple equivalent items are now tag-based, allowing for more modded item support
- Added entity tags used in future versions of minecraft, for future-proofed compatibility
- Coincidentally, Emotivores can't feed off zombies or pillagers anymore. They don't have love, what were you expecting?

The latest update to Pony Origins contains small but significant fixes to diets.
- Finally fixed the nutrition problem for goats, herbivores, and pescavores.
- Modified the mod jar to be Forge compatible
- Origins Forge is UNSUPPORTED at this time, due to problems with Origins Forge's implementations
