About this mod


This mod was inspired by the "Man From The Fog" and the "Cave Dweller" mods.

This mod adds a new mob to the game that has a chance to spawn at night or in caves and it's main goal is to scare the player.

For anyone updating the mod from 1.1.5-1.2.1 to 1.2.2-1.2.5 I would suggest deleting the config from version 1.1.5-1.2.1 because the config from 1.2.2-1.2.5 doesn't automatically update.

How the Lurker works

The mob works by spawning near the player and waits for the player to find them. Once the player finds the mob they can do one of two things

1: Look at the mob to scare it off (the mob will teleport away)

2: Get closer to the mob without looking at it which will aggravate it and make it attack the player (after about a minute or so of them chasing the player if they cannot catch the player they will teleport away) (The mob will also break the doors of a player's build if the player tries to lock the mob outside when it's aggravated unless the player's build uses iron doors)

(Version 1.0.4 and up: The Lurker will teleport away once it has killed a player and will have a chance to walk towards the player and stop at a certain distance away)

(Version 1.1.9 and up: If the Lurker gets trapped in a boat/minecart he will immediately exit the boat/minecart)

(Version 1.2.2 and up: The Lurker has a small chance to get angry if the player looks at the Lurker and the Lurker can be invisible and follow the player)

(Version 1.2.10 and up: The Lurker has variants. The "Faker", which will spawn on insanity stage 6, will jumpscare the player and increase their insanity stage by +1. The "Hider" will hide within the ground when looked at, and if the player gets too close, it will teleport away and leave behind a Void Gateway. The "Shadow" will stalk the player in dark places like caves and can jumpscare the player. The "Unprovoked" variant will become aggressive for unknown reasons. The "Shapeshifter" will appear in villages and can deceive the player into trading with them, and if the player is tricked into trying to trade, he will proceed to attack the player, although if the player figures out who the shapeshifter is and hits him, he will transform back into the Lurker and run away. The "Neutral/Runaway" will watch the player, and if the player looks at it or gets close, it will either run away or walk towards the player.

The Void Gateway is a portal that the Lurker can leave behind in random spots around the world. Upon interacting with the gateway, the player will either be jumpscared or rewarded by reverting an insanity stage back by 1.

When a "Neutral/Runaway" spawns, it will start the insanity timer of the player closest. If a player kills the "Neutral/Runaway", then the insanity timer will stop, so the player is no longer progressing insanity stages.

When insanity reaches stage 7, the "Aggressive" Lurker will spawn and chase the player down. This Lurker has different traits from the normal ones, as he can duck and crawl into spaces to reach the player. He can also break glass and doors, and if underground, tunnel towards the player if there is space for it. All Lurkers who walk or run will now be able to climb to get to the player.)

(Version 2.0.3 and up: Any Lurker variant can be attacked directly by the player if lurker_invulnerable is set to false when this is set to false the player's shield will go on cooldown for 2.5 seconds when attacked by the Lurker so the player can't shield spam to kill the Lurker)

(Version 2.2.9 and up: When the player sleeps through the night insanity will stop progressing until the next neutral Lurker spawns)

(Version 2.5.0 and up: The player can eat food to reduce or increase insanity the player can also fish to reduce insanity The Neutral/Runaway Lurker will stop walking towards the player when close enough and will run away when the player gets too close)

(Version 2.5.8 and up: The player will get "Amnesia" on insanity stage 6 and the Amnesia will despawn mobs if you are close to them and looking away)

(Version 2.8.2 and up: The Void Hands are a variant of the Void Gateway, and when the player gets too close to it, it will reveal itself to the player and will then start to chase the player. The Void Hands can open doors, and once they have low enough HP, they will teleport away and jumpscare the player)

(Version 2.8.7 and up: The invisible entities have a low chance of spawning and when around the player can do certain actions which includes playing a static like jumpscare, playing cave sounds to trick the player into thinking they're being watched, following the player, watching the player, and playing Lurker running sounds as a sort of fake out.)

(Version 2.9.8 and up: The "Creep" will watch the player, but if the player attacks or goes really close to it, then it will attack the player, and if the player looks at it, then it will teleport near the player instead of teleporting away. The "Unprovoked",  "Stare",  and Nether variants of the Lurker can be stunned when attacked but will have a stun cooldown period where the player cannot attack them. The "Phantom Head," if looked at, will slowly float towards the player, and if close, will force the player to look at it as it gets closer and closer. The damage of the Lurker variants that are able to attack the player scales with the player's armor, so they are never safe, even when overpowered. The Shapeshifter Pig and Cow will attack the player if the player tries to kill them for food. The Lurker will kill animals if the player is not near. The "Unprovoked" won't always disappear when looked at. The Lurker will swim somewhat faster if the player is in a boat.)


4.0.0 Information
Entering the New Dimension

To enter the new dimension, you must create a horizontal portal out of some of the new blocks added by the mod. The blocks that you use should be easy enough to figure out, as they're the only ones that are obtainable in the overworld that the mod adds and are related to "Deepslate".

To light the portal, you must use a new type of flint and steel that the mod adds.

How to obtain a "Sorrow Bottle"


The Sorrow Bottle has a specific section here, as the process for obtaining it isn't explained in game, and it might just seem like it's unobtainable.

To obtain the Sorrow Bottle, you must be holding a sword in your main hand and an empty bottle in your off hand, you must then interact with a Sorrowful Howling Willow Log.


If you find the sounds in the mod to be too loud then you can turn them down, the sounds are a part of the "Friendly Creatures" sound option in the options menu.

The ambient sounds are a part of the "Jukebox/Note Block" sound option in the options menu if you wish to turn them down instead of turning them off.


How to edit/use the the Config

To use the config, you have to go into your Minecraft game directory, then go into the "config" folder and it should be there. You can edit the config with Notepad, Notepad++, or any code editor you may have installed.

Or, alternatively, you can install the Configured mod and access the config menu by finding the mod in the "mods" tab in the pause menu and opening the config that way

  • Changed the block placing detection for the Arena so if you eat and look at the ground it doesn't "cancel" your "block" placement
  • Fixed the Void Onyx Ore not generating naturally
  • Added some stuff on the backend for full release, might cause bugs but idk
  • Added the anticipation quotes as they were missing/I forgot to add them originally

  • Lowered the Void Gateway spawn chances as they seemed to be too common
  • Changed Void Gateways to only retreat/activate when next to them or when they are in range and are able to be seen so you can't activate them through walls

  • Fixed phantom Lurker returning null and crashing the game

  • Rewrote the way the Midnight Lurker works (He still functions the same in game it's just mostly backend stuff to make the modding process easier and now he can be summoned using a spawn egg in game)
  • Added a new Dimension "The Void"
  • Added two new Wood types "Umbral Oak" and "Howling Willow"

  • Made it so the Lurker now scales with difficulty (kinda) when the game is on easy the Lurker will function how he used to so when Aggressive he will insta break doors and take his time breaking stone however when on normal or hard the normal "aggressive" variant will break stone progressively and will break doors in stages and the actual "aggressive" variant will break doors and stone instantly

  • Some "dev" items have been added (Sort of like Terraria dev items but they're obtainable and can be used in game)

  • Made it so when the Lurker is near normal or soul torches they will flicker and if the Lurker is aggressive will make them go out permanently
  • Changed the Lurker's stun time to now scale with difficulty so on easy it will be shorter, on normal it will ne the normal amount of time, and on hard it will be faster

  • There will now be a random chance for the "Invisible" variant to jumpscare the player if close to the player for long enough and the player hasn't noticed it
  • Changed it so the Lurker can no longer be hurt or stunned by arrows/projectiles
  • Added a feature so when the Lurker is hit by a mob that isn't a player and can be stunned he will send out a shockwave that immobilizes nearby mobs that aren't the player
  • Changed it so the Lurker can only be stunned using a weapon/tool
  • Changed it so the "aggressive" variant's speed is now relative to the player's or tries to be anyway so that if the player has a speed potion or is using the "ParCool!" mod the Lurker can keep up
  • Made it so if the player somehow gets too far away from the "aggressive" variant he will teleport in front of you if there is space and if there isn't will teleport on top of you and leaves "Void Hands" in the place where he teleported from
  • Added sound cues for dictating which stage of sanity you are at without needing the "Insanity Bar"
  • Added "Farmer's Delight/Respite" compatibility so when you have that mod installed you can only decrease insanity using foods that give the "Comfort" buff or by drinking teas
  • Changed the "Nether" variant to now spawn less and will now walk when a certain distance away from the player and will no longer scream
  • Added a feature where if you have a pet near you it will slowly decrease Insanity
  • Made it so if you are near a pet that you own and it dies it will greatly increase your insanity most likely making it go up by an entire stage however this will have a cooldown so if you say have 7 dogs and they all die at once you don't get immediately chased by the Lurker
  • Added a feature where if you are near hostile mobs for a extended period of time and the light level isn't above 8 then your insanity will increase
  • Made it so dying will greatly increase your insanity
  • Changed the Outcast Villager so you can now trade with him
  • Changed the Outcast Villagers book to be somewhat different
  • Changed the Lurker's damage so it now properly goes through armor
  • Changed the "aggressive" variant's damage to scale with the player's health so no matter how much health you have if you are hit 3-4 times then you're dead (unless you heal obviously)
  • Made it so the Lurker can now swim underwater
  • Made it so certain Lurker variants now slow down when chasing the player and near them as if he's "toying" with them
  • Changed the "Void Gateway" and "Void Hands" entities and combined them into one entity
  • Changed the Lurker's chase theme to only play on to the player that is being "chased" and now plays at the location of the player instead of the Lurker so the music shouldn't get muffled when using the "Sound Physics" mod
  • Changed it so the Lurker now spawns less in caves because he is the "Midnight" Lurker not the "Cave" Lurker
  • Changed it so the Lurker can now break any type of glass block

Version 3.3.4 and up updates and changes


  • Changed how the Aggressive Lurker and Nether Lurker variants climb

  • Reduced the TPS lag that was happening in the Overworld and Nether

  • Updated the Russian translation

  • Tweaked the Lurker's in game model to be a mix of the old and new one

  • Added a Insanity bar so you can keep track of what stage you're on

  • Added a config option to turn the Insanity bar on and off

  • Changed it so when you sleep your Insanity stage will go down by one and will still make it so the Insanity "timer" stops
