Infested: Swarms and Spiders

Expands the role of Minecraft's Spiders and Silverfish, as well as adding new mobs, armors, enchantments, and items.

Infested!

This mod adds a variety of content relating to insects and spiders, expanding the role and function of vanilla Spiders and Silverfish, and adding a number of completely new insect mobs. This mod also adds new armors obtainable via craftable Armor Trims, new enchantments, a new potion recipe for the Resistance effect, and new pets and minions.

All of the content added by Infested. All the mobs that are added or have their roles expanded by this mod.

Features

New Mobs

Mantis

Mantises can be found in forest biomes, while their cousin, the Orchid Mantis, can be found in cherry blossom biomes. These insects are neutral to the player, but prey upon most arthropods. When a mantis sets its eyes on a target, it will enter an Ambush, turning it invisible as it slowly creeps up on its prey, before a devastating strike that leaves the victim stunned. When a mantis slays an arthropod target, it will eat it, causing it to regain health.

A mantis can be tamed with spider eye, or bred by feeding it fermented spider eye, and will drop Chitin upon death. Mantises may also drop Mantis Claws, which can be brewed into a potion that will grant you their Ambushing ability, or a special weapon. Mantises can be given special names to give them a skin that references a Godzilla Kaiju.

Grubs and Crimson Beetles

In Nether Wastes, you might come across tiny fanged larvae in pursuit of Zombified Piglins. When these grubs hit their target, they will inflict it with a Parasitic Infection, eating away at the Zombified Piglin until the grub completes its metamorphosis into a Crimson Beetle. Fully mature beetles can be found commonly in Crimson Forests. 

Grubs can be a nutritious source of food within the Nether, and are dropped by Grubs and beetles (along with Chitin in the beetle's case.) Adult Crimson Beetles are neutral, and can be bred with Rotten Flesh to produce a clutch of grubs. If an uncooked grub is fed to any arthropod entity tamed by you, it will restore a good portion of their health.

Loot Beetles

You may come across tiny, skittish insects when you break certain blocks. These insects are called Loot Beetles, and have several variants.

  • Harvest Beetle: Found by breaking grasses, ferns, and shrubs. They drop crops and seeds.
  • Jewel Beetles: Found deep underground by breaking deepslate ores. They drop raw ores and gemstones.
  • Chorus Beetle: Found rarely by breaking Endstone. Drops a Shulker Shell.
  • Ancient Debreetle: Found exceedingly rarely by breaking Netherrack. Drops a Netherite Scrap.

Loot Beetles will run away quickly, and despawn after ten seconds, so hunt them down as quickly as you can! You can adjust the rate at which they spawn via config.

Tamed Spiders, Silverfish, and Bees

Rarely, Spiders, Bees, and Silverfish may drop new egg items. These can also be obtained through brewing, or by breaking certain blocks (bee nests and hives for bee eggs, infested blocks for sivlerfish eggs.) Bee and Silverfish eggs can be used to spawn temporary minions, that will fight for you. Silverfish aren't very strong, but they can distract your enemies and a large swarm of them can easily protect you from many enemies. Bees will attack once with a powerful sting that inflicts a serious poison, before dying.

Spider Eggs, however, will spawn a persistent ally. While a Tamed Spider does not have as much health as a tamed Wolf, it makes up for it with its ability to inflict potion effects on your foes. By default, the effect is poison, but feeding it items that can be used to brew certain negative potions (and some others) can change the effect. You can also personalize your spider by using dye to change the color of its eyes. You can also equip your tamed spider with Spider Armor, which functions similarly to Wolf Armor.

Brilliant Beetles

Based on the mob of the same name from Minecraft Legends, the Brilliant Beetle is a tameable mount that, while slower than a horse, is capable of scaling walls and slowly gliding to the ground.

The Brilliant Beetle can be found in Jungle Biomes, bred with Cookies, and tamed using Cocoa Beans. Like other mobs from this mod, it can be commanded to Stay, Follow, or Wander. However, you'll need to sneak-right-click to change its command, as right clicking normally will just cause you to mount it. If you feed it a bowl of Bug Stew, you can give it the Speed Effect for one minute.

Other Features

Equipment

Infested also adds new armors and weapons, obtainable by crafting special armor trims using mod items, and using them with leather and wooden tools in a smithing table.

  • Chitin Armor - This armor comes with some built in toughness and knockback resistance. While wearing the full set, you can sneak to give yourself the Ambush effect, slowing you down, making you invisible, and causing your next strike to deal increased damage and stun the target. This armor comes with one level of the Infested and Parasitoid enchantments (see below.)
  • Mantis Sickle - A weapon styled on the Mantis. If you are missing health or hunger when you slay an enemy with this weapon, you will consume your enemy to be healed and/or fed. This weapon also increases the damage you deal in an Ambush. Try holding another Mantis Sickle in the offhand to double these benefits.
  • Spider Armor - This armor grants the wearer night vision, and also increases damage you deal to targets trapped in cobwebs. You can also create your own temporary Cobweb Traps that can be placed down and will disappear after a short time, by shift-right-clicking the ground while wearing the full set. You won't be impeded by these traps as long as you're wearing the Spider Boots. Additionally, slaying an enemy that is slowed by cobwebs or the Slowness effect will spawn a temporary Spider Minion.
  • Spider Sica - A dagger styled after Spiders. This weapon has a 1/3 chance to poison a target on a hit, which increases by 10% for each piece of the Spider Set you wear. Wearing the full set will amplify the poison to poison II. Damage dealt by this dagger is increased at night.
  • Bee Armor - This armor gives the wearer the Jump Boost effect, and also allows you to crouch to give yourself Slow Falling. This armor synergizes well with Swarm Cells, with each piece that you wear increasing the number of minions you can have out at a given time.
  • Stinger Poniard - A rapier styled after Bees. This weapon comes with a free level of the Parasitoid enchantment, and for every piece of the Bee Set you wear, it has a stacking chance to summon a temporary bee minion when you strike an enemy.

Swarm Cells

A new tool type that can be used as a reusable source of minions.

These items can be used to generate a number of minion mobs, up to the maximum amount for the specific swarm cell you're using. If you try to generate more than that maximum, it will fail, even if the minions you currently have out are from a different type of swarm cell. These minions will stay with you until they die, or you dismiss them by using the item on them. You can crouch-use a swarm cell to set it to an 'automatic' mode that will slowly replenish your minions as long as you have it in your inventory.

There are currently three types of Swarm Cells, one for bees, one for silverfish, and one for spiders.

Spider Alchemy

By brewing Spider Eggs with certain ingredients, you can transform them into Elemental Spider eggs, infused with one of five special abilities which range from igniting foes to causing them to randomly attack each other. By default, Elemental Spiders will jump at targets and detonate on a hit, but you can brew them further to transform them into living landmines or more persistent 'cloaked' spiders that apply their effect on each hit.

Enchantments

Four new enchantments are added:

  • Infested: Applicable to shields and chest armor. When you are hit with an attack, you will spawn a friendly silverfish to assist you for a short time. Wearing the Spider chest armor will replace the silverfish with Spiders.
  • Parasitoid: Applicable to weapons. When you slay an enemy with an attack, a friendly silverfish will hatch from it, assisting you for a short time. Wearing the Spider chest armor will replace the silverfish with Spiders.
  • Ensnaring Strike: Applicable to weapons. Consumes slightly more durability to temporarily ensnare hit enemies in cobwebs, slowing them down.
  • Conjured Swarm: Applicable to swarm cells. Instead of consuming durability to spawn mobs, the swarm cell will consume your experience points.

New Blocks

Certain mobs from this mod will drop Chitin on death. This material can be crafted into the Chitin Armor trim, used to brew potions of resistance, or crafted into a new set of blocks.

Additionally, this mod adds three new redstone blocks, the Spinneret, Spider Trap and the Silverfish Trap. The Spinneret will cover blocks above it in temporary Cobweb traps when activated, and the Silverfish Trap will crumble, releasing between 5-8 Attack Silverfish that will go after anything they perceive as a threat, including you. The Spider Trap does much the same, but only released 3-5 more powerful Attack Spiders, that leave behind Cobweb Traps on death.

  • Jumping Spiders: The default type, will seek out monsters and protect you. Upon attacking, they will detonate in an elemental explosion.
  • Damaged Spiders: A spider that has been rendered immobile and highly volatile by brewing with Glowstone Dust. Upon being damaged or an unfriendly entity straying too close to it, it will detonate. Essentially a living landmine or grenade.
  • Cloaked Spiders: A spider that has been made more powerful by brewing with Redstone. Does not detonate, but has more health and deals more damage. Each of its attacks will inflict its elemental effect. There are five different elemental types. 
  • Fire: Ignites targets.
  • Ice: Freezes targets, slowing them and dealing damage over time.
  • Lightning: Stuns enemies briefly, slowing them to a halt.
  • Blast: Deals more damage upon exploding, knocks targets away. Has no cloaked variant.
  • Psychic: Causes targets to forget their current attack target, and attack a random nearby entity (which cannot include you or any of your allies.) Has no cloaked variant.
  • Each piece of the Spider Armor set you wear adds a stacking 20% chance to spawn an additional elemental spider.
  • Interact with an elemental spider to cause it to return to you as its egg item. If the spider was an additonal spider spawned from you wearing the Spider set, it will not return an egg, but can still be dismissed this way.

--- Tamed Spider

  • The tamed spider now has 7 more skins to choose from. By giving it an Elemental Spider egg, you can give it a matching skin. Name one 'Marshall' to give it the default minecraft spider skin. Name one 'Kumonga' to give it a skin based on the Kaiju of the same name from the Godzilla series.
  • Spider Armor: A new item craftable with bones, cobwebs, and string. Functions similarly to wolf armor for your tamed spiders, effectively giving the tamed spider an extra 20 health. Use bones on an armored spider that has had its armor damaged to restore some durability to the armor. Like wolf armor, it can be unequipped with shears, but doing so does not return the item to you. As a tradeoff, you can carry an entire stack of them, meaning you can reapply spider armor on the fly. Definitely not me being too lazy to implement a durability system to the Spider Armor.

--- New Items 

  • 13 new items have been added for the Elemental Spiders.
  • Spider Egg Sac - A throwable item craftable with a Spider Egg and String. Throw at a block or an entity to summon some tamed Spider Minions that will protect you for a short time.

tl;dr - Polished many things, revisted the mantis, made specific items and effects from the mod easier to come across, added new equipment, and made it play nicer with other mods.

➤ General fixes and updates

  • Fixed an issue causing a crash if another of my mods was present (I'm a dummy)
  • Once again attempted to fix the issue where Grubs and Crimson Beetles would spawn in unsafe locations.
  • Grubs will now only target Zombified Piglins that have not yet been infected by another grub, meaning you're more likely to come across them overall.
  • Mantises have a new look, with an improved model and animations.
  • Orchid mantises now have a special red and black skin when they are babies, based on some real life orchid mantises.
  • The above skin can be made permanent on a mantis by feeding it a Poisonous Potato while it is still a baby to stunt its growth.
  • Name a mantis 'Gimantis' or 'Kamacuras' for a special skin.
  • Mantises can now glide like brilliant beetles.
  • Feed a mantis a bowl of Bug Stew to give it strength for a short time.
  • Adjusted mantis height so its hitbox will be more accurate and nameplates will show up where they should.

  • Spider Sica - Weapon styled after Spiders. Has a 1/3 chance to poison targets, which increases with each piece of the Spider Set you are wearing. Deals more damage at night. Uses the Dagger moveset.
  • Stinger Poniard - Weapon styled after Bees. Has a level of the Parasitoid enchantment built into it. Each piece of the Bee Set you wear also adds a stacking chance to summon a bee minion when you strike a target.

  • Config has been added allowing you to determine if wild or wandering Mantises will attack arthropods from other mods, bees, and tamed entities.
  • The chance for loot beetles to spawn can now be edited via config.
