Apprentice's Codex Title

Sky Edge Sample GIF Movie

A lightweight add-on for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks focused on side-grade magic: new spells, spellcasting weapons, curios, spellbooks, and utility blocks.

It does not add new mobs, spell schools, ores, biomes, or mandatory progression. Existing worlds can use the content without restarting, while newly generated villages may include a new profession villager.


Contents

The following content is currently included.

Spells (Around 50 spells)

Including:

  • Combat spells: summoned blades, spears, rifles, shotguns, muskets, and other magical weapons.
  • Defensive and support spells: barriers, guard stances, traps, healing blooms, and mana recovery.
  • Exploration and utility spells: magical lights, personal storage, remote vision, structure search, pet storage, and treasure sensing.
  • Gathering and crafting spells: tree cutting, terrain shaping, crop harvesting, smelting-style processing, and item collection.

Items

Items include:

  • Spellcasting gear: Spellcaster Guns, Swingcast Staves, Offhand Spell Amplifiers, and other spell-triggering equipment.
  • Specialized magic weapons: Smashcast Scepter, Focus Staffbow, Multipurpose Staffrifle, Reflectcast Shield, Mana Force Blade, and more.
  • Spellbooks and curios: Ender Grimoire, Archivist's Grimoire, Spell-stained Runic Tablet, mana/defense accessories, and utility curios.
  • Mage armor sets: glass-cannon robes and school-agnostic caster gear for players who want more spell power at a real defensive cost.
  • Utility blocks: Spellcaster Workbench, Spell Dispenser, Atelier Station, and other support blocks.

Spell Dispenser can cast supported scroll spells with redstone, mana potion fuel, and optional Create contraption support.

Datapack Customization

This mod supports customization via datapacks.

You can add or modify several behavior definitions, such as spell-related profiles, deny lists, recipe-like data, and other configurable gameplay data.

Because the available options have grown large, detailed documentation has been moved to the GitHub Wiki.

  • Official downloads are provided only via CurseForge or Modrinth.
  • I do not provide support for builds obtained from other sources (reuploads, mirrors, etc.).
  • If you encounter an issue, please reproduce it using an official file and include the version number and logs.
  • Unofficial reuploads may be outdated or tampered with. Use them at your own risk.
  • If you run into a bug, please report it on GitHub Issues when possible, with logs/mod list included.

Note

  • This is my first mod, so some parts may be rough.
  • The author is Japanese, so some English wording may be awkward or imperfect.

  • Added "Spell-Sided Edge": A beloved magician’s sidearm.

Changes / Tweaks

In preparation for the 1.0 release, many older features have been reviewed and received major balance adjustments.

Spell Balance Adjustments

Cooldowns have mainly been adjusted to better match similar spells from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.

  • Auto Magnet
    • Added a feature that prevents item and experience orb collection depending on whether the player is sneaking.
  • Slash Blade
    • Changed so it is now affected by cast time reduction.
  • Mantis Leap
    • Changed so it is now affected by cast time reduction.
  • Precision Jack
    • Changed so it is now affected by cast time reduction.
  • Moon Light
    • Changed cooldown. (12s -> 8s)
    • Changed so it is now affected by cast time reduction.
  • Companion Trunk
    • Changed max level to 1.
  • Quick Arms
    • Changed mana cost. (Lv1: 70 -> 75, Lv5: 110 -> 155)
    • Limited the maximum number of activations to 16.
    • Increased how much spell power contributes to the number of activations.
  • Fly Swatter
    • Changed cooldown. (20s -> 12s)
  • Commence Fire
    • Increased damage.
    • Changed the headshot multiplier cap. (400% -> 500%)
    • Increased the growth rate of the headshot multiplier, both its base value and the amount gained from spell power.
    • Adjusted the number of activations. (Changed toward slightly fewer activations to differentiate it from Quick Arms.)

Item Balance Adjustments

Many items had become increasingly complex and prone to bugs, so elements judged to have little impact on fun have been removed or simplified.

  • Removed the handling that allowed items such as Scrollcaster Gauntlet to ignore cooldown reduction settings for weapon-imbued spells, as it was causing frequent issues.
    • For balance reasons, only Amulet of Spell Autocast is still unaffected by cooldown reduction settings for weapon-imbued spells.
  • Removed cast time override settings from Spellgun configuration. It now only controls whether casting is skipped or not.
  • Removed the ability for Swingcast Staves, except Silver, to cast spells while skipping casting.
    • Instead, Mithril Freecast Staff and Spell-Revolvercast Staff can restore this feature through calibration slot items.
  • Removed the ability for Charm of Jumpcast to cast spells while skipping casting.
  • Changed Amulet of Spell Autocast so its allowed spell restrictions now match Mithril Freecast Staff.
  • Added a calibration item that controls Amulet of Spell Autocast activation based on buffs.
    • By default, only ISS buff spells and healing spells are supported.
    • Additional support can be added via datapacks.
  • Changed the crafting output amount of Multi-purpose Spell Round.

Other

  • Adjusted some spell death messages.
  • Readjusted item icons.
  • Adjusted Malum repair recipe IDs and material costs.
  • Added recipes that allow Spell Round-type items to be crafted through automation when Create is installed.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where the beam attacks of Arcane Beam and Phalanx Charge could not pass through grass.
  • Fixed a bug where damage calculation could sometimes behave incorrectly when spells were activated at long range through items such as Twin Bladed Channeling Staff.
  • Fixed a bug where Craftsman's Delight cooldown reduction did not apply to spells cast through Scrollcaster Gauntlet.
  • Fixed a bug where Chromatic Magia Dress Leggings reacted repeatedly to continuous casting.
  • Fixed a bug where blocks could not be generated or placed in the intended position under certain conditions with spells such as Mage Light.
  • Added a temporary fix for armor models not rendering when Epic Fight is installed.
    • This does not include special armor rendering or clipping prevention.
  • Fixed missing weapon and armor stat settings when Epic Fight is installed.
    • Some weapon stats have also been adjusted accordingly.
    • Armor no longer relies on automatic calculation and is now generally tuned more toward light armor.
  • Fixed a bug where Talisman of Mana Shield could not be enchanted through the enchantment table. (1.21.1 only)
  • Fixed a bug where Swingcast Staffs and vanilla wooden swords had overly high attack speed when Epic Fight was installed. (1.21.1 only)

  • Added "Bound Sword": An easy way to dual-wield when a combat mod is installed.
  • Added "Bound Bow": A time-honored ranged attack method dating back to the early days of Minecraft.
  • Added "Inscribe Ice": It looks pretty cool when you manage to control an area with it.
  • Added "Heavenly Fist": Knock enemies down, and flatten them while you are at it.
  • Added "Mirage Avoidance": A magical invincible step that may feel familiar from somewhere.

Items

  • Added "Satellite Followcast Amulet": More useful as a support tool than as pure follow-up damage.
  • Added "Mana Thruster": A jetpack for a magic mod. Or maybe jet boots.
  • Added "Charm of Jumpcast": A leg-mounted casting tool that works like an aerial jump alternative.
  • Added "Ring of Spell Cast Parrying": A limited way to defend while staying on the offensive.
  • Added "Magi-Compressor Gadget" (only when Create is installed): A belt that lets you use Create tools with Iron's mana.
  • Added the "Spell Throwing Card" series: A low-cost, consumable early-game version of Twin Bladed Channeling Staff.
  • Added "Spell-Revolvercast Staff": Cycle through and use many different spells just by swinging it.
  • Added the "Maiden of the Elements" series: This is the true all-school armor set.
  • Added "Staff of Zenith": An all-school-focused staff found at the end of the journey.

Changes / Tweaks

  • Added broader support for counter-spell interactions.
  • Reworked Crystal Bladed Staff.
    • It now fires Mana Slash when a normal attack misses.
    • Mana Slash can no longer be selected directly as a spell.
    • Changed Mana Slash cooldown to 0 seconds.
  • Adjusted the upgrade conditions for Spell-Stained Runic Tablet and added server config support. (Mostly a nerf.)
  • Nerfed Archivist's Grimoire because it was too strong from the start. Its early-stage performance has been greatly reduced, and server config support has been added.
  • Added Better Combat support so the spell selection feature of Scrollcaster Gauntlet still works in the offhand even while holding a two-handed weapon.
  • Added Epic Fight support for Scrollcaster Gauntlet, changing its behavior under Epic Fight. (Similar to Epic Fight's Grove.)
  • Removed the ability to attach and remove scrolls through Spellcaster Workbench.
  • Added the ability to attach and remove scrolls through Spell Calibration Bench.
  • Changed Twin Bladed Channeling Staff so its spell activation when thrown no longer uses the Spell Dispenser handling.
    • As a result, the datapack format has changed. Please refer to the GitHub wiki for the updated information.
  • Changed Mana Force Blade so releasing block immediately after a successful perfect guard no longer causes cooldown.
  • Updated staffs and Scrollcaster Gauntlet that could use offhand shields and similar items with right-click, so bows, crossbows, and Spellguns can also be used.
  • Added support for processing items placed on Create depots and conveyor belts.
  • Added fireproof behavior to some items.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Simplified Chinese translations where the meaning differed from Japanese or English in-game text.

    • Please remove it directly from loot tables with a datapack or similar method from now on.
  • Added many server config options for modpacks and multiplayer servers.
  • Made Errand Mage trades data-driven.
  • Removed a setting that made Scarlet Thirst too easy to obtain from catacombs.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where Smashcast Scepter swung too slowly when Better Combat was installed. (1.20.1 only)
  • Fixed a bug where many Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks spells could not deal damage when cast from a Spell Dispenser.
  • Fixed a bug where breath-type spells, such as Fire Breath, could not deal damage when cast from a Spell Dispenser.
