Apprentice's Codex Title

Sky Edge Sample GIF Movie

A lightweight add-on for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks focused on side-grade magic: new spells, spellcasting weapons, curios, spellbooks, and utility blocks.

It does not add new mobs, spell schools, ores, biomes, or mandatory progression. Existing worlds can use the content without restarting, while newly generated villages may include a new profession villager.

Contents

The following content is currently included.

Spells (Around 60 spells)

Including:

  • Combat spells: summoned blades, rifles, shotguns, muskets, and other magical weapons.
  • Defensive and support spells: barriers, guard stances, traps, healing blooms, and mana recovery.
  • Exploration and utility spells: magical lights, personal storage, remote vision, structure search, pet storage, and treasure sensing.
  • Gathering and crafting spells: tree cutting, terrain shaping, crop harvesting, smelting-style processing, and item collection.

Items

Items include:

  • Spellcasting gear: Spellcaster Guns, Swingcast Staves, Offhand Spell Amplifiers, and other spell-triggering equipment.
  • Specialized magic weapons: Smashcast Scepter, Focus Staffbow, Multipurpose Staffrifle, Reflectcast Shield, Mana Force Blade, and more.
  • Spellbooks and curios: Ender Grimoire, Archivist's Grimoire, Spell-stained Runic Tablet, mana/defense accessories, and utility curios.
  • Mage armor sets: glass-cannon robes and school-agnostic caster gear for players who want more spell power at a real defensive cost.
  • Utility blocks: Spellcaster Workbench, Spell Dispenser, Atelier Station, and other support blocks.

Spell Dispenser can cast supported scroll spells with redstone, mana potion fuel, and optional Create contraption support.

Datapack Customization

This mod supports customization via datapacks.

You can add or modify several behavior definitions, such as spell-related profiles, deny lists, recipe-like data, and other configurable gameplay data.

Because the available options have grown large, detailed documentation has been moved to the GitHub Wiki.

See the datapack documentation here: https://github.com/hexqua/apprentice_codex/wiki

The documentation is currently written in Japanese.
If needed, please use your browser's translation feature.

Note:

  • Datapack formats may change between mod versions.
  • Please check the documentation page matching your mod version.
  • In-game descriptions, tooltips, and JEI integration may not cover every datapack option.

Changes / Tweaks

In preparation for the 1.0 release, older content continues to receive extensive reviews and major balance adjustments.

Spell Balance Adjustments

  • Assist Wings
    • Removed gliding functionality.
      • Fall-damage protection still remains.
    • Wings now break when entering water, restoring the available jump count.
  • Higanbana
    • Adjusted hitbox size. (Reduced)
    • Can no longer deal damage through walls.
  • Slash Blade
    • Adjusted hitbox size. (Increased except for height)
    • When attacking through walls, damage is reduced and knockback is removed.
  • Mantis Blade
    • Increased cooldown. (4s -> 8s)
    • Significantly reduced leap distance.
    • This mainly follows balance changes made to teleportation spells in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
  • Dual Acrobat
    • Changed from charging beforehand and firing rapidly after casting completes into a continuous-casting spell that fires repeatedly while being cast.
    • Reduced base cast time. (5s -> 3s)
    • Damage now scales with spell power.
  • Bullet Stream
    • Spin-up time is now fixed and relatively long.
    • Attack rate no longer ramps up over time and instead starts at maximum speed.
    • Cast duration is now fixed based on spell level.
    • Adjusted damage to match the new behavior.
  • Long Stride
    • Changed max level to 1.
    • Changed to an Explorer's Cane-exclusive spell.

    • Added the ability to stand on liquids.

    • Effect duration now scales much more strongly with spell power.

      • Vibrations unrelated to movement, such as breaking blocks, are not ignored.
  • Linear Build
    • Reduced range. (32 -> 24)
    • Placing each block now consumes an additional 5 mana.
    • Added Craftsman's Delight support, increasing its range from 24 to 32 blocks as a special effect.

Item Balance Adjustments

  • Changed Scrollcaster Gauntlet enchantment handling to use the enchantment table like other items.
    • This also allows enchantments to be removed with a grindstone, so please remove any enchantment books already inserted if necessary.
    • Existing enchantment books can still be removed, and doing so will not alter the enchantments already applied.
    • Future enchantment restrictions should be handled through external enchantment-control mods.
  • Increased Scrollcaster Gauntlet spell power from 5% to 10%.
  • Scrollcaster Gauntlet can no longer accept Surge or Attunement.
    • Existing enchantments will also no longer function or provide their bonuses.
  • When a rune is inserted into an adjustment slot to specialize an item toward a specific School, 5% of its original spell power now remains.
  • Circuit Heat Staff and Spell-Revolvercast Staff no longer require Pyrium Ingots.
  • Magic items that previously required diamonds now use a dedicated intermediate material instead.
  • Increased crafting difficulty for the Swingcast Staff series overall.
    • Iron Swingcast Staff is excluded from this change.
  • Reworked Apprentice Desk.
    • Can now create Wooden Wands imbued with specific spells using a stick, scroll ink, and either a focus item or scroll.
    • Wooden Wands are disposable items that consume durability and mana when right-clicked to cast their imbued spell.
    • Creating a wand partially consumes the ink, leaving it unusable for scroll crafting or ink upgrades.
    • Focus items and scrolls are required to choose the School, but are not consumed when creating a wand.
    • Only Common-tier ink equivalents can be crafted entirely from vanilla items.
  • Reworked Iron Swingcast Staff.
    • Its recipe no longer requires Arcane Essence-related materials, allowing it to be crafted early in progression.
    • Killing mobs while holding the staff now has a low chance to drop a special item.
  • Changed Arcane in a Jar output from Arcane Essence to the same special item dropped by Iron Swingcast Staff.
  • Added server configuration for the input and output items used by Arcane in a Jar.
  • Added an effect to Diamond Swingcast Staff and Netherite Swingcast Staff that reduces the cooldown of imbued spells when striking enemies.
  • While holding Netherite Swingcast Staff, long casts can no longer be interrupted.
  • Added Belt slot compatibility to Spellcaster's Quiver.
  • Limited Spellcaster's Quiver to one equipped instance at a time.
  • While Craftsman's Delight is equipped, enchantments applied to spells are now taken from the tool held in the main hand.
    • As a result, enchantments on the ring itself and the ring's enchantment-application functionality have been removed.
    • Enchantments already applied to the ring will no longer function after this change.
  • Significantly reduced the crafting difficulty of Essence Smoker.
  • Changed the crafting difficulty of the Magi-Agent armor series to roughly match the Chromatic Magia Dress series.
  • Reduced the crafting difficulty and slightly reduced the performance of the Maiden of the Elements armor series.
    • The default server-config spell power values have changed, so resetting the relevant settings is recommended.
  • Performed a major rework of the Magi-Agent, Chromatic Magia Dress, and Maiden of the Elements armor series.
    • Overall defense has been increased.
    • Each set now has three adjustment slots and can be customized using dedicated items.

Other

  • Added JEI recipes for adjustments performed through the Spell Calibration Bench.
  • Changed the rendering of Arcane in a Jar.
    • Previously, inserted items were displayed at orb size while the produced output accumulated visually.
    • This behavior has now been reversed.
  • Changed the Essence Smoker texture.
  • Added visual effects to firearm-style spells that hit instantly.
    • The projectile may visually travel for a few ticks, but the hit itself is still instantaneous. The projectile is purely a visual effect.
  • Changed Malum's Replenishing enchantment so it can be applied to staves.
    • This behavior is identical on both 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.
    • Multi-purpose Staffrifle is excluded because, although it is a staff, it has no direct attack functionality.
  • Spell-Sided Edge can now benefit from Replenishing on the offhand item.
  • Removed the ability to ignite Essence Smoker using Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks' Firebolt.
    • The internal implementation changed significantly, making the feature too costly to maintain safely.
    • It was already nonfunctional in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks 3.16.2, so it is now officially removed.
  • Added a cold-biome building variant for Errand Mage.
  • Added a chest to the Errand Mage house.
  • Comfort Berries can now be used in composters.
  • Comfort Berries now emit light when placed in flower pots.
  • Changed Atelier Station so that when refilling an empty flask, it no longer considers the flask type.
  • Added tooltip display for adjustment slots on items that can accept adjustment items through the Spell Calibration Bench.
  • Added JEI displays showing adjustment-slot combinations and brief explanations for items configurable through the Spell Calibration Bench.
  • Items with adjustment slots or scroll slots can no longer be used as the consumed item in same-item anvil combinations.
    • They can still be used after removing the stored items.
    • This is a safeguard against accidentally consuming configured items.
  • Assist Wings can no longer be activated while riding another entity because its effects do not function while mounted.
    • Broom of Hoverride is excluded because it has a special interaction with Assist Wings.
  • Replaced sound effects that previously used third-party assets.
  • Newly added intermediate materials now support Iron's Gems 'n Jewelry. (1.21.1 only)
  • When casting Touch Dig while Craftsman's Delight is equipped and Malum's Spellweaving Pickaxe is Primed, the spell can now affect blocks that are not normally suitable for pickaxes. (1.21.1 only)

Bug Fixes

Common

  • Improved the error message shown when a Spellgun cannot cast a spell because the spell's mana cost exceeds its maximum mana.
    • This restriction is intentional, so such spells remain unusable.
  • Fixed vanilla enchantment compatibility on armor not behaving as intended.
    • On 1.20.1, anvil enchantment restrictions were too strict.
    • On 1.21.1, enchantment restrictions in general were too permissive.
    • Mod-added enchantments such as Wisdom are unaffected.
  • Fixed incorrect subtitles for Mantis Blade.
  • Fixed spell wheel registration being completely nondeterministic.
    • Registration should now be more stable, although some variation may still remain depending on the installed mod set.
  • Spellcaster's Ammo Pouch and Spellcaster's Quiver now display their tooltip grids even when empty, similar to Luminous Device.

1.20.1 Only

  • Fixed a crash when collecting Spirits while Ring of Manaweaving is equipped with Malum installed.
    • This issue does not originate from Apprentice's Codex, but it was severe enough to warrant a compatibility patch.
    • The workaround checks the Malum version directly, so it only functions with Malum 1.6.7.

1.21.1 Only

  • Fixed Spell-Sided Edge not taking enchantments on the offhand item into account.
  • Fixed Spell Dispenser not functioning correctly on structures moved by Sable.
  • Fixed rare disconnections that could occur when beginning or completing casts for many spells.
  • Fixed many weapons having attack reach values that differed from their expected 1.20.1 behavior when Better Combat was installed.
  • Fixed incorrect rendering position for Frost Rune.
  • Fixed missing item tags for various materials and other items.
  • Fixed Smashcast Scepter sometimes being unable to accept enchantments added by other mods.
  • Fixed instant-hit firearm spells, including Lethal Assault, not being recognized as ranged attacks by Iron's Gems 'n Jewelry.
  • Fixed screens for blocks added by this mod having unusually dark backgrounds.

Item Balance Adjustments

Many items had become increasingly complex and prone to bugs, so elements judged to have little impact on fun have been removed or simplified.

  • Removed the handling that allowed items such as Scrollcaster Gauntlet to ignore cooldown reduction settings for weapon-imbued spells, as it was causing frequent issues.
    • For balance reasons, only Amulet of Spell Autocast is still unaffected by cooldown reduction settings for weapon-imbued spells.
  • Removed cast time override settings from Spellgun configuration. It now only controls whether casting is skipped or not.
  • Removed the ability for Swingcast Staves, except Silver, to cast spells while skipping casting.
    • Instead, Mithril Freecast Staff and Spell-Revolvercast Staff can restore this feature through calibration slot items.
  • Removed the ability for Charm of Jumpcast to cast spells while skipping casting.
  • Changed Amulet of Spell Autocast so its allowed spell restrictions now match Mithril Freecast Staff.
  • Added a calibration item that controls Amulet of Spell Autocast activation based on buffs.
    • By default, only ISS buff spells and healing spells are supported.
    • Additional support can be added via datapacks.
  • Changed the crafting output amount of Multi-purpose Spell Round.
