Recording Client for Vanilla MC Servers

This modpack is designed for content creators.

Low end PC's get a massive FPS boost, while high end PC's can enjoy visual improvements.

Also includes various tools (like Replay Mod) to make better videos easier!

This modpack does not need to be installed on your server. All mods can run client-side, so none of your friends need this modpack for it to work on a Vanilla MC server (see "Q&A" below).

Backstory:

Hi! I'm Robert. I put together this modpack to get actual FPS while running 1.19+ on my old budget PC, and for a better recording experience while playing on the Shenanigang SMP Minecraft Server.

Your time is valuable as a creator, so I decided to publish this modpack to help other creators save time, so you can focus more on actually making videos & livestreaming, rather than configuring Minecraft for features you almost wish were in it in the first place. I designed it to be vanilla-compatible, but better!

Useful for recording your own worlds & servers if you wish!

Examples of what you can do with this client:

(Note: Ep5 also includes some "movie magic" green screen in the intro):

(sidenote: Most of my content is on Rumble, but Modrinth would only embed YT here for some reason). Follow For Livestream Links Here: https://twitter.com/PeculiarPine

Some Mods/Features Included:

(I’ve tried to find open-source mods as much as possible (to make licensing easier), though there are limited exceptions (e.g. Henkelmax’s mods, such as “Simple Voice Chat”, etc.))

(Note: Features may vary by Minecraft version, as not all mods exist for every version. However, I try to find replacements to maintain feature equivalence as much as possible.)

Video Recording:

  • Replay Mod (for recording timelapses, and cinematic shots)

  • Bobby (extreme render distances up to 128 chunks!). Very useful for Replay Mod.

  • Freecam (built-in spectator mode camera) (just don't use this to find people to kill and stuff, such as in PVP environments)

  • Armor Poser (Customize armor stands easily! (shift-click)) (Requires being installed server-side or it won't do anything). More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/armor-poser

  • Litematica (build schematics mod. Useful for timelapses)

  • MiniHUD (useful for designing redstone farms)

  • WI Zoom (camera zoom mod, similar to Optifine zoom)

  • "Simple Voice Chat" (in-game proximity chat for servers that support it)

  • Isometric Renders (Useful for making thumbnails! Customizable image renders with transparent background (parts of world, items, entities, mobs, etc.). Use command /isorender to open GUI. More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/isometric-renders )

  • Bigshot (Can take screenshots 2x, 3x, or 4x your monitor resolution, on a hotkey (e.g. on my 1080p monitor I can take up to 8k screenshots!) (requires setting key in "keybinds" menu). Meaning you can zoom in incredibly far in post-production without losing quality! The potential for zoom-in shots in videos is incredible! 😃) More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/bigshot (For some MC versions I used Fabrishot instead. More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/fabrishot )

  • Creator Overlays (toggleable gridlines "rule of thirds" overlays for making vertical/horizontal videos, etc., for easier composition of your shots (especially useful with Replay Mod). More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/creatoroverlays

FPS Boost:

  • Sodium (FPS boost)

  • Various Sodium support mods (extra FPS boost!)

  • FerriteCore (RAM reduction)

  • LazyDFU & Smooth Boot (improves MC launch times) (MC 1.19 only. No longer needed for 1.20+)

Visual Improvements:

(Most of these are optional, enable/disable as you wish):

  • Iris Shaders (Shaders support mod. Install your own shaders into it.)

  • "Borderless Mining" (improved fullscreen mode when using multiple displays. Also allows choosing which monitor to fullscreen on.) (May lower FPS. Configurable via "mods" menu)

  • FPS/coordinate overlay (enable/disable in "Video Settings")

  • BetterF3 (Better F3 screen)

  • ShulkerBoxTooltip

  • Chat Heads (shows player heads in chat)

  • Controlling (searchable keybinds menu)

  • Dynamic lights mod (torches glow in your hand)

  • Light Overlay (Mob-proof your builds! F7 enables overlay. Explained here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/light-overlay )

  • MiniHUD ("Mob despawn sphere" overlay! & many other features useful for making farms!)

  • Resource Packs (Enable in the "Resource Packs" menu):

    • Small Shield & Totem (so the shield doesn't take up half the screen!)
    • "Continuity" (connected glass textures & more)
    • "Fast Better Grass" (connected grass texture)
    • Motschen's Better Leaves (bushy leaves!) (Note: enable "Cull leaves" & set "Cull leaves depth" to 1 in video settings, or FPS will be terrible)

Proximity Voice Chat:

  • "Simple Voice Chat" (in-game proximity chat for servers that support it)

Controller Support:

  • MidnightControls (controller support for Java edition! So your friends who prefer controller can join you directly in Java, without needing Bedrock Edition crossplay support).

No Chat Reports:

  • "No Chat Reports" mod (prevents 1.19+ chat reporting. See Q&A below)

Permissions:

Your Videos/Streams:

Feel free to make your own videos/streams using this modpack. And send me the link! I'd love to see how you're enjoying this modpack!

I only ask that you credit me in some way. And that, if reasonably possible, you provide a link to this page (such as, in your video's description), so your viewers can download this modpack for themselves if they choose.

Q&A:

  • Q. Who is this modpack for? A. Feel free to use this modpack for your own single-player worlds or servers with friends (if your server rules allow it).

  • Q. Is modpack Hypixel-safe? A. No. Do NOT use this modpack on the Hypixel server, as some mods are not allowed by Hypixel (eg: "Freecam"). While this modpack technically will run on any vanilla server, always check server rules before using. (Especially for PVP servers).

  • Q. What does "Vanilla" mean? A. Vanilla Minecraft simply means "not modded".

  • Q. Will this modpack work on all Vanilla MC servers? A. Technically, yes. All mods can run client-side, so it should allow connection. (Though some features may not work). But remember to check for any server rules, especially for PVP servers (e.g. "Freecam" is not allowed on Hypixel, etc.), so use of this modpack is at your own risk.

  • Q. Is it client-side or server-side? A. Yes, and optional. All these mods can run without being installed on the server. So it should be able to run completely independently. However, it's worth noting a few mods have optional server-side components, which your server admin can install to help speed up the server. Also, some mods (e.g. Armor Poser) won't do anything if not installed on the server. Completely optional though.

  • Q. What is "Chunky" mod? A. Chunky mod adds a command to pre-generate chunks. Very useful alongside the Bobby mod. Can pre-generate chunks in the "bobby-fallback" single-player world to get those extreme render distances. More info on commands: https://modrinth.com/plugin/chunky Let me know if you'd like a tutorial video on how to setup Bobby for extreme render distances with this.

  • Q. Is "Chunky" mod safe for servers? A. (Note for server admins): I tested, and non-OP players can only use this command in single-player. So this can't be used by non-OP players to crash servers or anything.

  • Q. Visual improvements, how do I enable/disable them? A. Many of them are in the "resource packs" menu. Those that aren't typically are in the "mods" menu.

  • Q. Freecam is allowed? A. Just don't use Freecam to find people to kill and stuff (like in a PVP-type scenario). If your server's rules allow the mod, it should be fine.

  • Q. Replay Mod file sizes? A. Replay mod records in a lightweight format. It's website says "An average Replay File of 10 Minutes duration usually is between 2MB and 10MB large." This means if you record 3 hours per week, for an entire YEAR, it'll be between 1.8GB & 9.3GB. (In contrast, a SINGLE 3 hour OBS recording for me is typically 5GB-8GB).

  • Q. Does Replay Mod replace OBS? A. Not really. Replays still have to be rendered into a video afterwards to be usable. It's good as a supplement to OBS, (i.e. useful for a different purpose).

  • Q. How to use Replay Mod? A. Instructions here: https://www.replaymod.com/

  • Q. How is 128 chunk render distance possible? Don't servers have a limit? A. MC servers have a render distance limit (default = 10 chunks) that overrides your client's max setting. Bobby mod gets around this by "caching" chunks previously sent by the server, to be displayed later. It also can use a single player world (titled "bobby-fallback") to load extra chunks the server has never sent before (requires configuration). You can see which are "fake chunks" by setting Bobby to "Taint Fake Chunks = true", then pressing "F3 + a" to reload chunks.

  • Q. Why is there a "bobby-fallback" world in single player? A. (see above answer)

Note on 1.19+ Chat Reporting:

  • Q. What about "chat reporting" in MC 1.19.84? (as it's been called)

  • Q. What is it? A. It's a "feature" where other players can report your chat messages if they disagree with you, and Mojang can ban you from all multiplayer servers, even in older versions of Minecraft (apparently Bedrock can ban from single player worlds too?). The biggest issue is that it gives Mojang centralized control over banning, when that power should really rest with the individual servers/admins. Here's one explanation I found (more in depth) if you're curious: https://fabulously-optimized.gitbook.io/modpack/readme/chat-reporting-faq#what-would-make-the-system-fair

  • Q. Did you disable it? A. Yes. Long Answer: Mojang can track chat because each chat message now includes a "cryptographic signature" (added in 1.19). This modpack includes the "No Chat Reports" mod, which removes those signatures. However, this may need to be allowed by the server to work, so this mod also shows a status icon (above chat) indicating whether it's working or not. On our own server, we set it up to allow removing those signatures, to prevent the chat reporting.

  • Q. My friends (using Vanilla 1.19.1+) see the popup "Messages sent on this server may be modified and might not reflect the original message"... what's that mean? A. Their Minecraft's just complaining it can't track chat anymore. Basically it's going back to the way chat has always functioned in Java edition (pre-1.19.1), so nothing to worry about.

The Legacy MC 1.12.2 Version! 😃

Why Minecraft 1.12?

Minecraft 1.12 has two very fun features I wanted, which were removed in later MC versions:

  • "Customized" world generation option, which opens up infinite possibilities for video ideas! (Called "Old Customized" on the MC Wiki).
  • "3D Anaglyph" mode! Although not all that useful, it can still be fun on occasion.

⚠️ NOTE: Most modpack features missing in this version...

However, there are still some key features available, so I wanted this version (such as it is) for myself, and I thought I'd publish it for those of you who might be interested.

For the full Recording Client experience, check out the latest MC 1.21 release!

List of features available in this version below...

Changes: Complete Re-build of the Modpack

Back in the MC 1.12 days, a completely different modloader was used (Forge VS Fabric). Meaning most of the 1.21 pack mods either didn't exist, or had completely different versions published, or alternative mods.

Mods Included (Quick Summary):

Recording Features:

  • Replay Mod
  • Simple Voice Chat

FPS Boost:

  • BetterFPS & VanillaFix (to help replace Sodium)
  • FoamFix (RAM reduction, to replace FerriteCore)
  • Surge
  • Phosphor (& "PhosphorCrashFix")

Visual Improvements:

  • Small Shield & Totem resource pack
  • WI Zoom
  • Controlling

More Features:

  • Better Ping Display (Forge version)
  • MiniHUD
  • "Light Overlay" is not available, but MiniHUD has this function built-in (which I've assigned to the F7 key). However, it's worth noting that MiniHUD itself must be toggled on for this to work (I've assigned the master toggle to the "-" key (to the right of "0" key)).
  • Litematica (currently broken)

Config Changes:

  • Removed all Litematica keybinds for now (see below)

Known Issues:

  • Litematica causes crash when "enableRendering" is toggled on. (Temporary fix: I've removed all hotkeys to avoid the player accidentally activating the mod, till I can find a fix. You can access the settings via the "mods" menu if you'd like to help me troubleshoot this).

Why "beta"?

  • This is a complete rebuild of my modpack using Forge modloader rather than Fabric. No idea what this will mean for stability, so that's why I'm marking this as "beta" and "0.1.0". Initial testing seems solid though. Let me know any issues you encounter.
1.16.5-1.1.0Бета1.16.5 · 11 февраля 2025 г.

The MC 1.16.5 Backport Version!

Backporting modpack version 1.1.0 to Minecraft 1.16.5

Changes For the 1.16.5-1.1.0 Version:

(This changelog is relative to the MC 1.17.1-1.1.0 modpack version).

Quick Summary:

  • Downgraded all available mods to MC 1.16.5, then tinkered with it a bit to fix crashing, and whatever other issues arose, etc.

Mods Downgraded:

  • Downgraded all mods to latest available MC 1.16.5 version.

Config Changes:

  • Reset Light Overlay "Light Level" & "Secondary Light Level" to the defaults for this version of the mod.

Mods Added:

  • Re-added RyoamicLights. It was in the MC 1.18 modpack version, but was removed from the MC 1.17 modpack, as it didn't exist for MC 1.17
  • Re-added ObsidianUI (support mod for RyoamicLights)

Mods Removed:

(Most of these do not exist for MC 1.16.5)

  • Removed Bobby. (Was causing lag spikes when crossing chunk borders)
  • Removed CIT Resewn
  • Removed Continuity
  • Removed owo-lib

Why "beta"?

Very many of these mods were brand new in MC 1.16, so potential crashing or bugs may arise.

I think I've fixed most of the issues with this version, so it should be stable. However, I couldn't spend as much time testing as I would have liked. If I have some reason to use MC 1.16 for an extended play session, I might update this pack with whatever I find. But in the meantime I decided to make it available "as is" for those of you who may really want a 1.16 version. Enjoy! :D

Known Issues:

  • Some ReplayMod recordings won't open afterwards. (Most of the replays of my test server wouldn't load for some reason. The ones from my singleplayer test world loaded just fine though. Whatever is causing this issue may be specific to my test server, so your mileage may vary. I recommend not relying on ReplayMod too much in this version of the modpack though).
1.17.1-1.1.0Бета1.17.1 · 6 февраля 2025 г.

The MC 1.17.1 Backport Version!

Backporting modpack version 1.1.0 to Minecraft 1.17.1

(See 1.21.4-1.1.0 for a longer changelog): https://modrinth.com/modpack/recording-client-for-vanilla-mc-servers/version/1.21.4-1.1.0

Changes For 1.17.1-1.1.0 Version:

Downgraded all available mods to MC 1.17.1, then tinkered with it a bit to fix crashing, and whatever other issues arose, etc.

Mods Downgraded:

  • Downgraded all mods to latest available MC 1.17.1 version. Except:
    • Downgraded MiniHUD to v0.20.0 as newer version was an "alpha".

Config Changes:

  • Set Bobby "Max Render Distance" limit to 32 (down from 128), due to crashing with higher render distances.
    • NOTE: This makes the mod essentially useless in single-player. However, as servers are still limited to 10 chunks by default, this mod's "chunk caching" features are still useful & nice to have on servers, effectively allowing the player to triple their view distance.

Mods Replaced:

(Replaced 1.21.4-1.1.0 pack mods with MC 1.17.1 mods)

  • Replaced Bigshot with Fabrishot (no 1.17.1 version available)
  • Replaced Cubes Without Borders with Borderless Mining
  • Replaced Lighty with Light Overlay

Mods Removed:

(Most of these do not exist for MC 1.17.1)

  • Removed Armor Poser (was crashing)
  • Removed Creator Overlays
  • Removed Debugify
  • Removed Fast Better Grass resource pack
  • Removed ImmediatelyFast
  • Removed Lithium
  • Removed MemoryLeakFix (was crashing)
  • Removed MidnightControls
  • Removed MidnightLib (not needed without MidnightControls)
  • Removed Mixin Conflict Helper
  • Removed No Chat Reports (not needed before MC 1.19)
  • Removed Sodium Dynamic Lights
  • Removed Sodium Options APi
  • Removed YetAnotherConfigLib

Why "beta"?

I think I've fixed the initial crashing issues with this version, so it should be stable.

But I couldn't spend as much time testing as I would've liked. If I have some reason to use MC 1.17 for an extended play session, I might update this pack with whatever I find. But in the meantime I decided to make it available "as is" for those of you who may really want a 1.17 version. Enjoy! :D

  • Added "owo-lib" (support mod for Isometric Renders)
  • Added "Small Shield & Totem" resource pack (so the shield doesn't take up half the screen) (enable/disable in the "resource packs" menu).
    • NOTE: Minecraft gives a warning about it being "incompatible" with this MC version. This message appears to be a bug, as it worked fine when I tested.

Updated Mods:

Changelog (Details):

v1.19.3-1.1.0/v1.19.3-1.1.1 Changelog:

Added Mods:

Added new mods from the latest MC 1.21.4 modpack (version 1.21.4-1.1.0), or found compatible replacements with similar functionality:

  • Added Armor Poser (easy configuration of Armor Stands (shift-click)) (requires being installed server-side to use). More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/armor-poser
  • Added Chunky (useful along with Bobby mod. Can pre-generate chunks in the "bobby-fallback" single-player world to get those extreme render distances). Instructions here: https://modrinth.com/plugin/chunky Let me know if you'd like a tutorial video on how to get extreme render distances with this. (Note for server admins: I tested, and non-OP players can only use this command in single-player. So this can't be used to crash servers or anything).
  • Added Continuity (connected glass textures and more)
  • Added Creator Overlays (adds gridlines "rule of thirds" overlays for making vertical/horizontal videos, etc., for easier composition of your shots (especially useful with Replay Mod). More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/creatoroverlays
  • Added Fabrishot (Replaces Bigshot, as no version exists for MC 1.19.3) (Can take high-resolution 4k screenshots (configurable) even on a lower-resolution monitor! Meaning you can zoom in in post-production without losing quality! More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/fabrishot
  • Added Fast Better Grass resource pack (optional, connected grass texture)
  • Added Isometric Renders (customizable image renders with transparent background (parts of world, items, entities, etc.). Use command /isorender to open GUI. Useful for making thumbnails.) More info: https://modrinth.com/mod/isometric-renders

The MC 1.18.2 Backport Version!

Backporting modpack version 1.1.0 to Minecraft 1.18.2

(See 1.21.4-1.1.0 for a longer changelog): https://modrinth.com/modpack/recording-client-for-vanilla-mc-servers/version/1.21.4-1.1.0

Changes From the 1.21.4-1.1.0 Version:

Downgraded all available mods to MC 1.18.2, then tinkered with it a bit to fix crashing, and whatever other issues arose, etc.

Mods Downgraded:

  • Downgraded all mods to latest available MC 1.18.2 version. Except:
    • Downgraded MemoryLeakFix to v0.8.0 as newer version was crashing.

Mods Replaced:

  • Replaced Bigshot with Fabrishot
  • Replaced Cubes Without Borders with Borderless Mining
  • Replaced Lighty with Light Overlay
  • Replaced SodiumDynamicLights with RyoamicLights

Mods Added:

  • Added ObsidianUI (support mod for RyoamicLights)

Mods Removed:

(Most of these do not exist for MC 1.18.2)

  • Removed "Fast Better Grass" resource pack
  • Removed "Lithium", as it was crashing with axolotl's
  • Removed "Mixin Conflict Helper"
  • Removed "No Chat Reports" (not needed before MC 1.19)
  • Removed "Sodium Options API"
  • Removed "YetAnotherConfigLib"

Why "beta"?

I think I've fixed the initial crashing issues with this version, so it should be stable.

But I couldn't spend as much time testing as I would've liked. If I have some reason to use MC 1.18 for an extended play session, I might update this pack with whatever I find. But in the meantime I decided to make it available "as is" for those of you who may really want a 1.18 version. Enjoy! :D
