Neon Reverie Shaders

Work in Progress (WIP): Neon Reverie is currently in active development. Visual refinements, compatibility improvements, and further optimizations are still ongoing.

Neon Reverie expands upon the Complementary foundation with softer lighting, dreamlike atmospheres, redesigned volumetric effects, refined material rendering, enhanced dimension visuals, and cinematic color grading.

Features & Highlights

  • Softer Lighting & Smooth Shadows: Warmer and gentler ambient lighting with smoother dynamic shadow transitions, refined edge filtering, reduced redraw stutter, and improved shadow consistency across land, water, and underwater scenes.

  • Fluffy Volumetric Clouds: Custom rounded marshmallow-style volumetric clouds with increased scale, thicker lower volumes, organic silhouettes, improved cluster separation, and optimized distant rendering.

  • Refined Water Rendering: Reworked water normals, reflections, refractions, underwater viewing paths, and color transitions for a clearer and more balanced appearance.

  • Reworked Ice Materials: Dedicated material and reflection pipelines for regular ice, blue ice, packed ice, and frosted ice, with improved translucency, environmental reflections, specular response, and material blending.

  • Water Droplet Refraction: A fading screen-space water droplet effect appears after surfacing from water, creating a short-lived refractive distortion before gradually clearing.

  • Expanded Night Skies: Enhanced nighttime environments featuring purple-blue nebulae, subtle pink celestial accents, and green aurora borealis.

  • Dimension Atmosphere:

    • The Nether: Red-orange drifting volumetric mist with improved depth, visibility, and atmospheric distribution.
    • The End: Shooting stars, deep-space nebulae, enhanced blue-purple atmospheric depth, and a glowing purple void cloud layer.
  • Cinematic Presets & Color Grading: A rebuilt post-processing system with configurable tone profiles, white balance, exposure, contrast, vibrance, bloom, depth of field, vignette, lens flare, motion blur, chromatic aberration, sharpening, anti-aliasing, and more.

    Included presets:

    • Survival (Neutral) — balanced clarity and comfortable visuals for normal gameplay.
    • Cinematic - Pink (Rose Warm) — designed for sunsets, cherry groves, snowy landscapes, and dreamlike environments.
    • Cinematic - Orange (Filmic Warmth) — richer warm highlights and cinematic contrast for screenshots and golden-hour scenes.
  • Expanded Customization: Additional style controls for glass, water, volumetric clouds, and post-processing allow the visual style to be adjusted directly through shader settings.

  • Compatibility & Localization: Built for Iris, with native compatibility for Distant Horizons (DH) and Voxy. Shader settings are available in 8 languages.

Compatibility & Feedback

Neon Reverie is primarily developed and tested on Apple Silicon (macOS) using recent versions of Iris.

The shader uses relatively conservative rendering implementations and retains much of the established compatibility foundation of Complementary Reimagined. However, testing across different GPUs, operating systems, graphics drivers, Minecraft versions, and third-party configurations is currently limited.

If you encounter any rendering issues, compatibility problems, visual bugs, or other unexpected behavior on any platform, feedback is welcome.

Neon Reverie v1.1 Changelog

This update focuses on improving shadow transitions, restoring the ice rendering pipeline, expanding marshmallow cloud volume, balancing water tones, and overhauling the post-processing grading pipeline alongside preset structures and localization.

Shadows

  • Smoother Refresh: Decreased shadow update frequency to minimize rapid redraw stutter and flickering artifacts.
  • Continuous Transition: Introduced continuous interpolation for dynamic shadow updates, ensuring smoother transitions between position changes.
  • Edge Softening: Improved shadow sampling and edge filtering to reduce noticeable pixelation and harsh seams during player movement.
  • Unified Underwater Shadows: Standardized underwater shadow filtering between surface view and submerged perspectives for consistent soft edge transitions.
  • Edge Decay: Tamed distorted, elongated shadows at extreme angles and widened the soft edge falloff radius.

Ice Surface

  • Independent Shading Pipeline: Restored the dedicated transparency and reflection path for standard ice instead of treating it as a generic opaque block.
  • Environmental Reflections: Re-enabled natural reflections for the sky, environment, and surrounding scenery.
  • Enhanced Translucency: Boosted the optical clarity and translucency of regular ice while retaining standard block textures and solar highlights.
  • Material Blending: Refined the blend between ice specular reflections and the underlying transparency layer, removing unnatural metallic sheens.
  • Constrained Underwater Reflections: Corrected reflection stacking on submerged ice faces to prevent drifting film artifacts across camera angles.
  • Variant Preservation: Preserved distinct visual profiles for packed ice and blue ice to prevent adjustments to regular ice from disrupting other variants.

Volumetric Clouds

  • Expanded Volume: Increased the overall scale and coverage depth of marshmallow-style volumetric clouds.
  • Thicker Base Layer: Augmented the lower volume density to prevent clouds from appearing unnaturally flat at the base.
  • Curved Silhouettes: Refined edge shading to favor rounded, organic ellipsoid shapes.
  • Cluster Separation: Reduced extensive planar merging in favor of organic gaps to improve atmospheric sky depth.
  • Code Standardization: Standardized internal cloud pipeline naming conventions to Rounded and Volumetric.

Water & Underwater

  • Saturation Adjustment: Slightly lowered water surface saturation to correct excessive blue tinting.
  • Submerged Tonality Alignment: Balanced the overarching color curve to provide a smooth color transition when crossing the waterline.
  • Optical Preservations: Maintained subtle surface ripples, reflections, refractions, and depth-based light absorption.
  • Atmospheric Balance: Improved color balance across water bodies, ice surfaces, and environmental fog when rendered simultaneously.

Post-Processing & Color Grading

  • Pipeline Rollback: Rolled back experimental high-range color adjustments that previously caused sky overexposure and lighting inconsistencies.
  • Stable Tonemap Stage: Re-anchored color grading strictly to the final display pass, avoiding interference with sky shaders or lighting buffers.
  • Dedicated Tone Options:
    • Neutral
    • Warm Orange
    • Rose Warm
    • Cool Cyan
  • Tone Intensity Slider: Added dedicated control over the blend strength of color profiles.
  • White Balance Control: Retained independent color temperature adjustment for warm/cool fine-tuning.
  • Consolidated Settings: Rebuilt the post-processing configuration panel, unifying Tone & Strength, White Balance, Exposure, Contrast, Vibrance, Dark Desaturation, Bloom, Depth of Field, Vignette, Lens Flare, Motion Blur, Chromatic Aberration, Sharpening, and Anti-Aliasing options.

New Presets
