It simply makes shadows have a bigger texture size, making them almost circle-like.
There are different texture sizes, so you can get your preferred size. (Take a look at the gallery)

Here's the smallest vs. biggest size:

16x vs. x2048

Note: This could (or not) affect performance when near lots of mobs.
