ToolNovation changes how broken gear works in Minecraft. Your tools, weapons and armor won't disappear when they hit 0 durability - instead they enter a broken state and stay in your inventory until you repair them. This works with all vanilla and modded gear automatically, with no custom items to replace what you already use.
Features
Broken Gear Stays With You
When a tool, weapon, or piece of armor reaches 0 durability, it doesn't vanish. It becomes broken - unusable until repaired, but never lost. Broken armor still provides 25% of its protection (configurable).
Repair Forge
A dedicated block for restoring broken and damaged gear. Place an item in it together with the matching repair material, and each material restores 25% durability (up to 4 materials per repair by default - enough for a full restore). The required material is whatever the item normally repairs with, so it works for vanilla and modded gear alike.
By default, broken items can only be repaired at the Repair Forge - anvil and grindstone repair are blocked so the broken mechanic can't be bypassed. You can re-enable vanilla repair in the config if you prefer.
Enchantments
Five enchantments, each with a real trade-off:
- Eternal Binding - preserves all enchantments through a repair. Without it, repairing a broken item strips its enchantments. The enchantment shatters when used, so plan ahead.
- Vampire's Touch - heals 20% of damage dealt, but doubles durability loss. Incompatible with Mending.
- Featherweight - +50% attack speed, but you take 30% more damage while wielding it.
- Reinforced - keeps working at 50% power when broken instead of locking up, at the cost of -15% mining speed while intact.
- Tempered Edge - +2 attack damage, but the item wears out twice as fast. Incompatible with Mending.
Charm System
The same effects are also available as charms - an alternative way to apply Vampire's Touch, Featherweight, Reinforced and Tempered Edge, each with a clearly listed upside and downside.
Quality of Life
- Wear penalty - worn-out tools (10% durability or less) mine slower, warning you before they break.
- Break feedback - an action-bar message and particles when an item finally breaks.
- Advancements - for breaking and repairing your first item.
- In-game config - a settings screen via Cloth Config (optional), with optional Modern UI support for a nicer-looking interface.
Configuration
Repair % per material, max materials per repair, whether repairs keep enchantments, whether anvil/grindstone repair is blocked, broken-armor protection level, break messages, and the wear-penalty thresholds are all configurable.
Installation
Drop the JAR into your mods folder. Requires:
- NeoForge 21+ for Minecraft 1.21.1
Optional:
- Cloth Config - adds the in-game settings screen
- Modern UI - improves the look of the interface

ToolNovation Reworked 1.0.0
A complete rewrite of the mod from the ground up. The original ToolNovation was a quick MCreator prototype with a fixed list of "broken" tool items. This version is built properly and changes how the whole system works.
The core idea
When a tool, weapon or piece of armor hits 0 durability, it no longer disappears. Instead it enters a broken state and stays in your inventory until you repair it. This now works with all vanilla and modded gear automatically — there are no more hardcoded broken-item variants to maintain.
What's new
Repair Forge A new block with its own interface. Drop in a damaged or broken item, add repair materials, and restore durability. Each material restores a configurable percentage, and you can choose to keep enchantments on repair.
Enchantments Five new enchantments, each with a real trade-off:
- Eternal Binding — locks enchantments to the item, but shatters when repaired.
- Vampire's Touch — heal from damage you deal, at the cost of faster durability loss (not compatible with Mending).
- Featherweight — faster attacks, but you take more damage while wielding it.
- Reinforced — keeps working at reduced power when broken instead of locking up.
- Tempered Edge — hits harder, but the blade wears out twice as fast.
Charms A charm system as an alternative way to apply these effects, each with a clear positive and negative.
