What is Tithe?

You're four hundred blocks from base, deep in a ravine you had no business entering, and your friend just took one hit too many... In Hardcore, that's it. They're done. The world moves on without them, they log off, and nobody can do anything about it...

And now somebody can, because this mod turns that death into a debt instead of an ending.

This mod replaces Hardcore permadeath with a tribute system. Dead players wait in limbo instead of being removed. Living players pay the world back to bring them home, and the price goes up every single time somebody is revived.

Features

  • Death is no longer permanent, but it is never free.
    • Dead players become spectators and wait. No timer, no countdown, no pressure on anyone to hurry.
    • A Quest Journal drops where they fell, listing the exact price of that specific death.
    • The journal cannot be burned or destroyed, and the whole server is told where it landed.
  • Every death asks for something different, so there is never a checklist to memorize.
    • Treasure pulled from tiered loot pools that get more remote as the toll climbs.
    • Primal Embers taken from mobs you kill personally.
    • A four rung crafting chain, each rung feeding the next.
  • Primal Embers are farm-proof by design.
    • Only direct, personal kills produce one. Traps, dispensers and AFK farms give you nothing.
    • Every ember is bound to one specific death, so nothing can be stockpiled in advance or donated from an unrelated corpse.
  • Marked creatures give you a faster and far more dangerous option.
    • They only spawn while somebody is actually waiting.
    • They are only ever the species that death needs, never anything useless.
    • Energized variants have 3x health, 2x damage and 1.25x speed, and drop 1 ember.
    • Charged variants have 6x health, 3.5x damage and 1.45x speed, drop 2 embers, arrive in a column of fire and drag a burning ring around their feet.
    • Every player within 150 blocks is warned and hears the Wither's cry.
    • No spawner, breeder or farm can ever produce one.
  • Everything is handed over at a craftable Tribute Altar.
    • Partial deliveries still count, so you are never punished for showing up with less than the full price.
    • Revived players return at the altar completely restored. No debuff, no penalty, no lasting scar.
    • Players can even be revived while they are offline.
  • The world remembers.
    • Every revival raises the toll for everyone.
    • Your own deaths stack on top of that, so your fifth costs far more than your first.
    • Past a threshold the quest changes shape entirely and moves into the End, demanding a hand-killed Ender Dragon and a Worldheart.
  • You can buy the toll back down.
    • A Primal Core lightens your own weight, but each one you spend is worth less than the last.
    • A Worldheart lightens your weight and the whole world's toll, and it never diminishes.
  • No player ever needs to type a command. The entire mod runs on two items and one block.
  • And more!

Usage

Using this mod is very simple!

Install it in your mods folder along with Fabric API and Cloth Config, on both the server and every client that connects. Mod Menu is optional and only needed if you want the settings screen. The server runs the mechanics, and the client provides the item textures and every piece of text that shows up in chat and in the books. If it is missing on a client, that player sees raw translation keys instead of readable messages.

It will work as-is. You do not need to turn Hardcore on first. Tithe requires Hardcore, so it enables it itself and raises the difficulty to hard on whatever world you install it to.

How does the toll work?

Two things push the price up and they stack together.

The world's toll rises by one every time anybody is revived, which raises the floor for everyone. Your own personal weight rises with your own deaths, and it multiplies whatever that floor currently is. A first death on a quiet world is a short trip. A fifth death on a scarred one is an expedition.

Neither offering affects a revival that is already underway. A quest's price is locked in the moment its player dies, so paying the toll changes what the next death costs, never what an outstanding one is already asking for.

Compatibility

Tithe takes over what happens when a player dies, so expect conflicts with anything else that does the same. That covers other lives and revival systems, mods that change respawn behavior, and anything that manages player game modes automatically.

Anything that switches Hardcore off will be overridden, since Tithe requires it.

Is it configurable?

Yes, heavily. Every balance value is exposed: the toll formula, how much a quest asks for, drop rates, Marked spawn rates and stat multipliers, and what each tribute is worth. There are switches for turning off Marked creatures, the final tier, Hardcore enforcement, and each chat announcement separately.

Settings live in config/tithe.json and have a full settings screen reachable from the mods list if you have Mod Menu installed.

Tithe's settings belong to the world, so the server decides them. When you are connected to somebody else's server the screen tells you so instead of letting you edit values that would change nothing.

You can also curate the quest pools directly. Which items and which creatures each difficulty tier is allowed to ask for are plain JSON files under data/tithe/quest_pool, so a datapack can override them and /reload picks the changes up. Unknown entries are skipped rather than breaking anything, and emptying a pool falls back to the defaults.

How do I uninstall it?

Just delete it from your mods folder.

Hardcore is never written into your save file, so your world goes straight back to whatever mode it was originally set to. Any Tithe items left lying around will disappear the next time the world loads.

Tithe 1.2.3

NeoForge support

  • Tithe now runs on NeoForge as well as Fabric, for Minecraft 26.2.
  • Quilt is covered by the Fabric jar, which runs on it unmodified.
  • Jar names have changed and now carry the loader as well as the game version. Update any automated downloads.
  • Fabric still needs Fabric API and Cloth Config, with Mod Menu optional. NeoForge needs Cloth Config only, and the settings screen appears in the mods list without anything extra.

tithe-1.2.3+26.1.2-fabric.jar Fabric, Quilt 26.1.x

Fixed

  • Marked mobs never appeared for later quests. Only naturally spawning creatures could be Marked, which excluded everything in the late and end pools: evokers, piglin brutes, ravagers, elder guardians, shulkers and wardens. The fast track through a revival simply did not exist once the toll rose far enough to demand them, and it looked like bad luck rather than something impossible. Eligibility is now based on whether a spawn can be automated, so spawners, breeding, conversion and the rest are still excluded and every quest creature is reachable.
  • A full wipe was permanent even after the world recovered. The record was only ever cleared by a brand new player joining, so the Ledger kept reporting everyone dead and the Tribute Altar refused all tribute, locking revival shut for good. It is now recalculated whenever anyone leaves limbo. A wipe is still final while it stands.

Improved

  • Marked arrival beacons are visible from across the announcement radius. They now stand 96 blocks tall instead of 9, are drawn so distance and particle settings cannot hide them, and burn for 10 seconds instead of 3.
  • Both tiers raise one now, orange for Charged and blue for Energized, so every announcement gives you something to walk towards.

Note

  • Minecraft 1.21.11 is not part of this release and stays on 1.2.2.
