Beach waves!

Tidal adds ambient water waves! They are most noticeable at beaches & shores where they get really big, but can also spawn around islands to help make the water feel more alive.

Waves can also crash against blocks if they're in the way, making rocky cliffs next to water even more dramatic! During full moons, the waves glow at night too.

Note: Tidal is currently in alpha! There's plenty of known bugs and plans for optimizations.
Lots of work happens behind the scenes to figure out where & how to spawn waves. If waves are not spawning, or spawning unusually(e.g. going wrong way), you can recalculate this info by reloading the chunks via F3 + a.

Dependencies

Requires Fabric API. In the near future, a config library might also be required.

Note for resource packs

If you decide to change the wave textures via a resource pack, the naming and mcmeta is very specific!!
The names & locations of textures must be the same.
A custom mcmeta format is used. Instead of animation, use wave_animation. This provides you with 2 options:

  • frametime - The amount of ticks each frame should exist. (Default = 5)
  • frame_height - The height(in pixels) of each frame. (Default = 16)

It is expected that the animation is done with a single vertical sprite sheet image. The amount of frames will be determined using the frame_height variable.

The "The Mod Sorta Works Now!" Update!

That's right! Plenty of bug fixes have been made(loading new chunks works now!), and new textures have been added!

  • New textures, specifically for waves washing onto shore, and the splashes for crashing into walls and falling into the water!
  • Newly loaded chunks should now spawn waves correctly!
  • With that, chunks are now checked for wave spawning much quicker!
  • A simple config via MidnightLib has been added, allowing you to change the wave's render distance, and enable debug mode. This means that MidnightLib is now required!
  • Waves now fall instead of washing up in mid air.
  • Waves are now smaller in river biomes.
  • Smaller waves do not have the bottom washing up animation anymore.
  • Wave rendering has had a major performance increase (Thanks Jasmine!).
  • The washing/wet overlay no longer works on air blocks.

The image gallary will be updated soon to showcase the new textures! In the meantime, enjoy!

Tidal 0.0.1 Alpha

Initial Alpha Release!

Known bugs:

  • Many unqiue textures are still needed
  • Waves do not continue spawning after enough block updates in a chunk
  • Waves do not always spawn correctly(facing wrong way) after loading new chunks after reloading chunks
  • Some waves are too big/last too long in smaller areas like rivers
  • Waves wash up in midair instead of falling
  • There's probably some Z-fighting issues(the waves were scaled up to their current scale very last minute, literally last night)
  • Waves hitboxes are much smaller than expected(they aren't entities, but still have a hitbox)
  • Waves cannot be viewed from beneath them
  • Config is missing
  • Debug mode is inaccessible(should be fixed with config)
  • Many preformance optimizations are available, and are planned to be made.

This current version exists so I can submit to BlanketCon before its submission deadline.
