'This isn't a story where you are stopping the spread of a world ending plague. No, the Joyplague has already won long ago... yet, the world still exists, mostly as before, despite the plague's omnipresence. Follow in the footsteps of a Lost Researcher to understand the plague's divine will and decide whether you will embrace it or deny it. Remember, your actions always speak of the choices you've alone decided on.'

Introduction

Risus is a mod that introduces a sort of plague onto the land, but one that does not spread in the same way other infections may. It is simply everpresent, only noticed whenever it manifests gore or ruin  (much of it is reminiscent of how cults are often romanticized). Explore the world and venture through the story told in the notes of a Lost Researcher; in your own pursuit to understand the Risus.

  • Dedicated (but still optional) guide/explanatory book to avoid the need of using a wiki and that expands alongside advancements

  • Multiple monsters with various abilities and fighting styles

  • New Weapon types and tools
  • Two new Armor Sets (with one having an Ability system) and multiple non-set armor pieces
  • New Fluid type + ability to fluidlog the mod's block with it, as well as lava and water

  • 5 new Music tracks + disks

Starting Your Journey

The best way to experience the mod is to go into it blind, without looking at the Added Content below. Once you interact with any part of the Risus, The Advancement Tab for Risus will become visible. Following the Advancements, you'll see that you should first locate an Alteration Site, where you need to put a book into the Alteration Catalyst found in the center. This will let you obtain the Researcher's Notes, which act as the guide book/wiki of the mod.

NOTE:

  • This mod is dependent on Patchouli.
  • Supported (optional) mods include JEI and Curios API.
  • The Display Notches mod IS NOT needed, nor is it advised to have both that and Risus together, as it leads to two instances of notches.

New Mobs

In order from left to right:

  • Gorger - found in Gorger Traps, it's a monster made up of a mouth and Gorger Guts - a block that acts as its body. It will kill anything that falls into its mouth and can only be killed by destroying the Gorger Guts
  • Weaver - an insect capable of taking one's memory and weaving it into a physical bloody web. Causes Amnesia on hit
  • Holder - a small critter that spawns near Risus structures. It will playfully sneak up on you to steal your held item and then run away with it laughing. Punching the Holder will result in it dropping the item
  • Lover - a monster that will not attack the player. Instead it targets other creatures, turning them into Beloved versions. Whenever it transforms a mob, it will leave behind Spreading Remains. If you notice these appearing more and more in an area, that's a good indicator that you need to light it up.
  • Ophanim - a stationary monster that will smite down all creatures that come close to it. Can only be killed with weaponry made from Concentration Cores.
  • Hex - a Beloved Vex; it can no longer go through blocks but is in return more aggressive and causes the Bloodclogged effect on hit.
  • Stalker - a Beloved Creeper; it will get as close as possible to the player, inflicting Darkness and Blindness.
  • Singer - a Beloved Enderman; when it sees player it will start "singing", causing Nausea. It cannot walk around but it can still teleport.
  • Licker - a Beloved Spider; its attacks will apply Pleasure, a much more lethal version of Poison that also makes controlling your movement difficult. On death, summons Baby Spiders.

New Pet

  • Litter - an immortal pet, created through an Inhabiting Ritual. Whenever in a dark area, it will excrete a Light Dropping. Can be picked up and carried around. Also customizable.

New Weapons, Tools and Equipment

New Tools and Equipment:

  • Skin Armor - offers less Armor points than Leather, but each piece increases Health by 5 (2.5 hearts)
  • Sinner's Robe - offers a bit more Armor points than Skin, but less Health. Can be dyed and each piece can hold an Ability from a unique list that also changes its looks.
  • Ophanim Wings - Elytra alternative, offering increased glide durability - but using fireworks or Riptide will deal a lot of damage to it.
  • Diamond Tipped Ophanim Wings - it has an additional combat ability of stabbing enemies when crouching with it equipped.
  • Eternal Youth - allows you to make pets immortal and forever babies
  • Lucky and Wretched Charms - they give combat oriented benefits based on your luck attribute.
  • Endless Pearl - a reuseable Ender Pearl; can store ten thousand of them as durability.
  • Light Devourer - places Darkness.
  • Hand of Greed - when in off-hand, increases block placement reach by 3.
  • Threads Of The Firmament - a set of boots that gives several buffs related to speed and agility, for the cost of armor points and protective enchantments (a similar trade-off to what elytra vs chestplate is)
  • Warhorn & Hexhorn - allows you to apply a potion effect in a range around you, either to allies or to enemies.

New Weapon Types:

  • Boomstick - explodes on hit, damaging both the attacker and the victim. Destroys blocks.
  • Flamethrower - spews fire that works even on Fire-resistant creatures.
  • Egg Sac - can be thrown. Summons Baby Spiders on impact that attack everything.
  • Knuckles - lower base damage than Swords, but faster attack speed, with an additional "Lunge" ability
  • Heavy Axes - combat oriented Axes, accepting Sword Enchantments.
  • Scythes - higher base damage than Swords, longer reach, but much lower attack speed.
  • Greatswords - higher base damage than Swords, slightly longer reach, with much lower attack speed and slight speed reduction. Can launch a slash projectile.

New Enchantments

By throwing an enchanted item into an Alteration Catalyst, the Enchantments on it can turn into Execrations. These are more volatile versions of the original, either boosting the effect in return for a downside or purely flip it on its head. There are over 25 Execrations to be played with.

New Blocks

A showcase of nearly all blocks in Risus

Risus adds a modest amount of blocks but most do have a function or mechanic. Tissue can decay into Bone; Skin can grow Hair; Zit pops; Remains can be smelted; Blood interacts with other liquids and can be dangerous as well, etc. Of particular note are:

  • Depth Vase: a new storage container that can store between 1 to 81 stacks of items depending on how deep it is in the world. It has no UI but can be interacted with manually or with a Hopper to insert and extract items.
  • Gorger Guts: a new storage container that has 54 slots and can pick up items in a 3x3 area above it.
  • Alteration Catalyst: a new crafting medium; allows the conversion of certain vanilla items into Risus ones.
  • Display Notches: they are a less intrusive alternative to Item Frames, allowing the display of items in various positions and rotations. The scale of flat items displayed matches that of blocks, meanwile 3D items (such as blocks) are at a one eighth (1:8) scale. These are also available as a separate mod for those who wish to use it without the Risus.
  • Weaving Mechanism: capable of turning Experience Orbs into items that can store said experience.

WARNING

Due to major changes, some minor item, biome and structure loss can occur in existing worlds when updating. Check below to see removed/changed features. New worlds are unaffected/safe.

Patch notes for 0.8.500

This update focuses primarily on improving how the mod functions and how it feels to play it. Therefore the actual amount of new content added is quite small.

Gameplay Changes:

  • You can now alter up to a stack of a single item at once in the Alteration Catalyst (only applies to manual insert, hoppers are still limited to one)
  • Eternal Youth now only works on ageable mobs, but no longer sets their attack to zero
  • Shadow Walker ability now triggers when crouching instead of when walking
  • Falling onto Fading Shadow or Darkness with Shadow Walker no longer deals fall damage and the player will now properly fall through when without.
  • Faded Statue has been turned into a block for better performance (it is still haunted though)
  • Laughing Stalk has been removed, replaced by Coalification item that lets you directly place the biome
  • Active Grimstone now drops Redstone when not mined with Silk Touch
  • Lover spawnweight adjusted one more time, now inbetween endermen and witches. They can also no longer spawn in Mushroom Fields
  • Added Beating Heart
  • Added Counterweight
  • Added Heart Chambers (replacing Risus Dungeons). Generation rate matches Trial Chambers
  • Added Ascetic Villager Profession. Trades Risus materials and sells maps to Risus structures. Workstation is Heart Transplant
  • Added Diamond Tipped Ophanim Wings, which include a weak melee attack when crouching, but it consumes some durability
  • Removed gravity reduction effect from Blood Feather and Threads of the Firmament (moved to Counterweight)
  • Also removed sneaking speed from Threads
  • Sacrificial Catalyst now works anywhere in the inventory (except armor)
  • Added Ascetic House to all village types
  • Changed Tesseract placement behaviour to just be placeable in air where you are looking. Can now be placed in fluids. Recipe also gives 8 blocks now
  • Changed Blade of a Thousand recipe to require a Beating Heart
  • Removed Elemental Deviation and Hunter's Exultation execrations
  • Added Smothering, Velocity, Heavenfall, Atheism, Corporeality and Algid Resistor execrations
  • Adjusted Xenophobia to only work on people now
  • Added Born To Burn
  • Decreased the verticality of the Toothknocker's/Stripper's lunge. Now a perfect jump-lunge with base stats results in a three block tall jump
  • Decreased horn durability from 256 to 64, and decreased range (warhorn max 40 to 20, hexhorn max 100 to 40)
  • Removed entity interaction range boost from Scythes
  • Added Fragmented Fossil
  • Added Carving Knife
  • Changed Bloodwyrm Spewer recipe to require Born To Burn
  • Added Potion of Transfusion

  • Buffed loot across structures to make them more worth tackling (primarily the Heart Chambers). The biggest change being Execrations showing up in loot now semi-regularly
  • Added the Risus Challenges advancement category for completionists

Tweaks and fixes:

  • Config added for Horns to use potion charges (default false)
  • There is now a dedicated music manager for specific structure music. It has its quirks, mainly it fully cutting off the currently playing music, but it's still an improvement over the previous system. Additional structures can be added to the existing music options by using the appropriate tags AND can be disabled by removing all structures from the tags
  • Feigr music's awkward cut off has been fixed
  • JEI now correctly shows what enchantments you can put on Risus tools and weapons
  • Added durability_enchantable tag to ophanim wings
  • Removed advancement requirements from base entries in the Researcher's Notes (in practice, this allows the book to be given on spawning into the world in modpacks without the base info being locked away)
  • Structure entries in Researcher's Notes are no longer advancement locked (associated/linked entries may still be)
  • Adjusted Ophanim wing animations
  • Remodeled the Ophanim Wings
  • Texture changes and tweaks for some smiling remains faces, concentration core and sacrificial catalyst, egg sac, ashen remains, fossil, toothknocker, gluttony scales blocks, faded statue item, bloodclogged effect, ashen remains item, bloodclogged & cinderglee hearts, false bloodwyrm head & spewer
  • Adjusted the Sinner's Robe armor set textures to have more umph
  • Changed the model for the GUI render of Bloodweaves (from core to b2b)

  • Inactive Holder is now properly fluid loggable

  • Bloodclogged logic has been simplified, now it just completely stops any healing
  • Coalification music no longer replaces current music
  • Removed coalification_mork and coalification_feigr biomes. In existing worlds they will just be gone, in new worlds they will be replaced by normal coalification
  • Fleshy Spawners now take into account beloved version of their entity (they won't continue endlessly spawning after max nearby entities)
  • Gorger can no longer attack while dying (hopefully)
  • Fully removed Risus Dungeons, all instances of it replaced with the new Heart Chamber. Existing worlds will keep the generated dungeons, but commands will not be able to locate it. The zombie_room loottable was also removed
  • Village house Family Tree type now comes with an Ascetic (free of charge!)
  • Gorgers no longer suffocate in blocks
  • Mirage Grass Block is now tagged as Dirt
  • Gorger Traps have been converted from a Structure to a Feature. They are slightly rarer, but a LOT more random and can now spawn in any biome (still respecting the has_grassy_maw type tags) including the nether. They also blend in/generate more smoothly
  • Watch Your Step advancement is now triggered by being inside of Mirage Blocks
  • Adjusted item rendering for Hand of Greed, as well as removing the render stacking with hand of greed + sinner's robe chestplate. It also now correctly disappears in first person when toggling visibility in Curios.
  • Bondknot Wood and Log is now dark gray on maps
  • Hypersomnia ACTUALLY fixed now (I did not realize daytime includes all previous days too. Don't trust the /time command)
  • Multiple grammar and entry changes in the Researcher Notes
  • Multiple entries added
  • New attack animation added to Scythes (also supports left handedness) and to Toothknocker when dual wielding
  • Added tooltip to weapons that mentions their weapon type. Makes using JEI or Creative Tab search easier
  • Most Observation entries have received a related advancement requirement to unlock (just like any other advancement reqs, these can be turned off with patchouli config)
  • Added SEVERAL item and block tags to Risus stuff (Blood now maintains farmland, Bundle of Hair blocks sounds, etc.)
  • Changed out the sound when using the Bloodwyrm Spewer, as well as lowering it
  • Rib Fossil tail now generates more smoothly
  • Bedrock Hands are more common now
  • Fixed Ophanim targeting/bell ringing
