    Villagers

The desperate alliance of villagers and illagers who have banded together to protect their home against invaders. Villager ingenuity combined with illager militarism make for a formidable army of warriors and spellcasters backed by farmers, builders and craftsmen. Transform the humble village into a fortress!

    Monsters

The previously wild and untamed creatures of the overworld now brought together by mysterious forces. Raise the dead from graveyards, hatch spiders from nests and more. Monsters shun sunlight and can only safely venture outside at night, but once night falls, they should be feared just as they have been for ages past.

    Piglins

The denizens of the nether who have come through portals to expand their empire. Piglins can only build on nether terrain, but wherever they expand the overworld is transformed into a visage of their home, turning grass into nylium and stone into netherrack. Conquer the overworld and let none stand in your way!


⚙️ Game Modes

Change gamemodes by right clicking the gamemode button at the top right:

Game mode selection

  • 🏛️ Classic: The classic RTS experience in FFA or teams. Destroy all of your opponents' buildings to win.
  • 🏕️ Wave Survival: Survive brutal waves of enemies each night, solo or with allies.
  • 💠 King of the Beacon: Fight for control of a central Beacon. Unlock powerful auras and defend it to win.
  • 🏗️ Sandbox: Build a custom map by freely placing units and buildings

If you're brand new to the RTS genre, you may want to start by playing the single player tutorial. The reign_of_nether_tutorial map included in the downloads will get you started on how to play an RTS game and all the basics of the mod.

🎮 Playing a game

To start a match, press F12 to go into RTS camera and use the top-right buttons to place your starting workers.

🏗️ Installation

1. Install Forge 1.20.1: https://files.minecraftforge.net/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.20.1.html

2. Download and add the Reign of Nether mod jar file to your Minecraft mods folder

3. Launch Minecraft, selecting your installation as Forge 1.20.1

When installing on a server, it's recommended to use these server.properties settings:

  • view-distance=25
  • spawn-monsters=false
  • spawn-npcs=false
  • spawn-protection=0
  • gamemode=spectator

For mod versions 1.1.3 and below, use Forge 1.19.2 instead


☁️ Experimental: Fog of War

By using the command /rts-fog enable/disable you can toggle fog of war for all players on the server. This means that all chunks not within immediate range of your units and buildings are greyed out, and all mobs and block updates are not seen until you go to explore them. This is a staple of classic RTS games, but this mod has unfortunately seen many bugs and performance issues related to it, and so it has been labelled experimental.

Tips for improving performance:

  • Optifine is not compatible! Enabling it with it installed will crash the game
  • Don't enable or disable it in the middle of a match
  • Reduce your chunk render distance

👣 Pathfinding Overhaul 👣

Pathfinding has been massively improved in accuracy and efficiency

  • It is auto-enabled on maps with a world border <=1024 blocks in size when the server is started
  • It can be toggled in any map using gamerule rtsPathfinding but doing this may lead to performance issues
  • Does not apply for slimes and magma cubes

⚠️ Mapmakers please note this patch fixes the bug that caused custom buildings to transfer between singleplayer maps - but you can reenable this behaviour with /rtsapi-export-custom-buildings

⚙️ Quality of Life ⚙️

  • Reduced the minimum height difference that capitol animals can spawn at from 4 to 3 blocks
  • Workers no longer knockback animals
  • Added a new unit attribute "evasionChance"
    • All projectiles roll a random accuracy value between 0 and 1 on spawn and miss targets with a higher evasion chance
  • Slimes and magma cubes no longer auto-consume targets that have auto-consume on
  • Villagers and zombie villagers now automatically drop their resources and gather nearby resources when they finish a stockpile
  • Aggro range is now always as far as attack range at a minimum

⚖️ Balance ⚖️

  • Monsters can now substitute a Slime Pit for one of the Stronghold prerequisites
  • Piglins can now substitute a Basalt Springs for a Wither Shrine for the Fortress prerequisites
  • Castles now require a Witch Hut instead of a Barracks
  • Wraith health reduced from 50 to 35, but they now have 50% evasion against physical attacks
  • Windcaller health raised from 40 to 45
  • Windcaller martial enchantment changed from Punch to Longshot (+4 range)
  • Workers now drop off resources between kills if multiple animals are shift-queued

🛠️ Bugfixes 🛠️

  • Fixed RTS Structure Blocks sometimes not creating a placed building
  • Fixed summoned zombies taking up population
  • All non-glazed terracottas and concrete powders now convert to netherrack and soul soil respectively
  • Endstone and endstone bricks now convert to netherrack and nether bricks respectively
  • Fixed custom buildings with small block counts displaying health incorrectly
  • Fixed being unable to shift queue attack moves
  • Fixed ghast fireballs being unable to hit windcallers

⚙️ Quality of Life ⚙️

  • You can now use /rtsapi-teams-mode none on any map to disable all start blocks, even without an rtsmap.json file
  • Added a draw aggro option to custom buildings
    • When disabled, idle and attack-moving units won't auto target it
  • Moved the iron golem default spawn to beside the furnaces to reduce chance of getting stuck on nearby buildings
  • On a countdown game start, your camera is now automatically moved to your starting position
  • Added a random faction button
  • The F7 debug display now has modes to show unit paths and block malus
  • Gamerule improvedPathfinding is now rtsPathfinding and can be used to force on the new experimental pathfinding code - be aware that is has a lot of bugs right now!

⚖️ Balance ⚖️

  • Beacons now gain 100 additional HP per upgrade they have
  • The Piglin Merchant and Marauder hitbox sized increased, now equal to iron golems (visually unchanged)
  • Spider hitbox width reduced from 1.4 to 1.0 to improve pathfinding and evasion against projectiles
  • Increased healing of slimes & magma cubes by 5 when consuming allies
  • The Wildfire's molten bomb now explodes upon collision with an enemy
  • The Wretched Wraith's bitter frost at rank 1 now produces a constant layer of snow at his feet
    • Other effects have been shifted up by one rank each
  • Snow now cannot melt within 5 blocks of the Wretched Wraith even without Bitter Frost learned

  • Fixed castle and bastion roofs breaking and causing garrisoned units to fall out
  • Fixed diagonal bridges not saving correctly
  • Units no longer try to walk through slime blocks

  • Wraith fear duration raised from 5 to 6 seconds

  • Fixed newly registered custom buildings not saving their placements correctly
  • Building blocks now convert farmland and dirt paths underneath into regular dirt when placed
  • This was preventing some blocks like rails from allowing the building to complete
  • Fixed Ravager roars not causing any knockback

🏚️ Monster House Rework 🏚️

Monsters no longer build haunted houses for population, instead Sculk Catalysts give 12 population each

  • Sculk Catalyst base HP raised to 75
  • Sculk Catalyst starting range raised from 25 to 30 blocks
  • Starting mausoleum night radius reduced from 80 to 60
  • Conversion crucibles now require 5 sculk catalysts instead of 6 houses
  • Sculk Amplifier upgrade cost raised from (200 wood, 400 ore, 150s) to (300 wood, 500 ore, 180s)

🏘️ Building Health Rework 🏘️

Buildings now have set amount of HP with a variable health per block

  • Many building HPs were changed, see the attached pic for details
  • Bridges no longer have damage resistance but instead just have a lot more health
  • Standard melee damage to buildings raised from 40% to 50%, and all building health raised to match
  • Added a health option to custom buildings

  • Monster buildings now show their night radius before they are placed
  • Piglin units are now immune to the Commercial Portal's lava blocks
  • The Wretched Wraith's ultimate is now only cancellable via stop commands (S)
  • Tweaked market and hoglin stables structures to reduce the chance units get stuck on them
  • Added a new custom building command trigger: "Off cooldown if captured"
  • Custom building commands with capture related triggers set their cooldown to max when captured
  • Custom building command cooldowns can only be edited if there is condition set that actually uses it
  • Added command '/rtsapi-set-alliance <true/false> '

⚖️ Balance ⚖️

  • Experience from player-controlled units is reduced by 50% (neutrals still give full exp)
  • Phantoms now deal magic damage (Heroes have 30% magic resistance)
  • Wretched Wraith's chilling screech cooldown reduced from 30s to 20s
  • Wretched Wraith's frostblink cooldown reduced from 20/15/10s to 18/13/8s
  • Wretched Wraith base mana regen reduced by 0.25/s, but gains +0.25/s per layer of snow it's on
  • Piglin merchant Greed is Good resource cost reduced to 75 per level
  • Piglin merchant TNT damage to buildings changed from 40 to 26/40/54 based on rank
  • Warden sonic boom damage to buildings raised from 15 to 30, but can no longer damage sculk catalysts
  • Dungeons now take 100% longer to build (it was way faster than normal due to its low block count)

  • Defeated players can no longer repeatedly surrender
  • Alliances are now reset clientside when changing server worlds or instances
  • Fixed spectators being able to toggle graveyard overflows
  • Fixed '/rtsapi building place' crashing when run on servers

  • Holding shift to place buildings no longer ignores the neutral/enemy setting in sandbox

💹 Market Trading 💹

Every faction now has a market building, requiring (150 wood, 150 ore) and 60 population worth of buildings excluding your capitol as a prerequisite to construct (It doesn't use up population).

Market buildings allow the exchanging of resource types, at a starting rate of 100:75, and reducing by 2 for every trade done. For example, trading 100 food for 75 ore will make the next trade 100 food for 73 ore. However, it will also make the opposite trade become 100 ore for 77 food.

The minimum rate is 100:15 and maximum is 100:135

Market rates are saved to your player data so you can't build a second market to reset them.
