Realism Tweaks

Minecraft 1.21.1 | NeoForge

Realism Tweaks is a lightweight, self-contained collection of small physics and survival tweaks that make the world behave a little more believably. Every feature is independent and fully configurable, so you can enable only the ones you want and tune the rest to taste.

Features

Heavy Objects

Anvils crush soft blocks (torches, flowers, grass and the like) directly beneath them when placed or while falling. Optionally, falling sand, gravel and concrete powder do the same - and can injure entities they land on, dealing damage that scales with the distance fallen.

Water Impact

Diving into water no longer makes you invincible. A long fall still hurts, but deeper water cushions the blow - shallow water barely helps, while a proper pool keeps you safe. When a belly flop turns fatal, you get a fittingly humorous death message.

Penetrating Projectiles

Fast-moving arrows (and optionally thrown tridents) shatter glass and keep flying instead of stopping dead, losing only some of their speed on the way through. Slow arrows still bounce off harmlessly.

Thin Ice

Walking on thin ice over water can crack it and drop you in. By default only sprinting or armoured players are heavy enough to break through, so casual walking - and sneaking - stays safe. Frosted ice from Frost Walker boots counts too.

Food Poisoning

Eating raw, spoiled or toxic food can make you sick. Mildly risky foods carry a chance of poisoning; severely risky ones (rotten flesh, pufferfish, spider eye, poisonous potato) are far more likely to get you - optionally with a bout of nausea. Risky foods are flagged with a warning on their tooltip.

Bleeding

Sharp attacks - bladed weapons, arrows, and clawed mobs like spiders, wolves and ravagers - can open a bleeding wound that deals damage over time. Craft a Bandage (2 paper + 1 string) to stop the bleeding early before it drains you.

Underwater Pressure (off by default)

For a tougher diving experience, deep water can drain your air faster the deeper you go.

Optional Integrations

  • Cloth Config - adds the in-game configuration screen.
  • AppleSkin - shows the food-quality indicator next to AppleSkin's tooltip food bars.

The mod runs fully without either; they only enhance the experience.

Configuration

Every feature can be toggled on or off, and the numbers behind them are adjustable: water cushioning depth and damage scale, projectile speed thresholds, ice break chance, poisoning chances and duration, bleed chance and damage, gravity-block damage, and more.

Installation

Drop the JAR into your mods folder. Requires:

  • NeoForge 21+ for Minecraft 1.21.1

Optional: Cloth Config, AppleSkin

Realism Tweaks 1.0.0

A complete rewrite. The mod is now fully self-contained - it no longer needs the separate realism_tweaks_lib tag library to run. Every feature was rebuilt from the ground up, and three brand-new survival systems were added.

New features

Thin Ice Walking on thin ice over water can now crack it and drop you in. By default only sprinting or armoured players break through, so casual walking and sneaking stay safe. Frosted ice from Frost Walker boots counts too.

Food Poisoning Eating raw, spoiled or toxic food can make you sick. Mildly risky foods carry a chance of poisoning; severely risky ones (rotten flesh, pufferfish, spider eye, poisonous potato) are far more likely to get you, optionally with nausea. Risky foods are flagged with a tooltip warning.

Bleeding Sharp attacks - bladed weapons, arrows, and clawed mobs like spiders, wolves and ravagers - can open a bleeding wound that deals damage over time. Craft a Bandage (2 paper + 1 string) to stop it early.

Reworked

  • Heavy Objects - the old "Heavy Anvil" tweak now covers falling sand, gravel and concrete powder as well. Gravity blocks can crush soft blocks and injure entities they land on, with damage scaling by fall distance.
  • Water Impact - replaces "Water Fall Damage" with proper depth-based cushioning: shallow water barely softens a fall, deeper water protects you up to a configurable safe depth.
  • Penetrating Projectiles - replaces "Strong Arrows". Fast arrows (and optionally tridents) now shatter glass and keep flying with reduced speed, instead of just breaking the block and stopping.
  • Underwater Pressure - kept, but now off by default.

Removed

  • Food Tier System (S–D food tiers and hunger-rate modifiers)
  • Max Armor Exhaustion
  • Pebble and Charcoal Chunk items

Other changes

  • Every feature can now be toggled and tuned independently.
  • Optional Cloth Config integration adds an in-game settings screen.
  • Optional AppleSkin integration shows a food-quality indicator next to its tooltip food bars.

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21+
  • Cloth Config and AppleSkin are optional

🌊 Update Overview

This release includes everything from the 1.21.1 version, along with brand new features:

  • Depth-based drowning damage – the deeper you are underwater, the more damage you take from drowning.

  • In-game feature toggles – you can now enable or disable specific mechanics directly from the in-game menu for easier customization.

Cooked Food Bonuses

  • Most cooked food items now grant a temporary hunger usage reduction after being eaten.

  • Foods are divided into tiers (S, A, B) with different durations and effectiveness.

  • Tier S meals give the strongest and longest-lasting effect, greatly slowing hunger loss from all activities.

Expanded Anvil–Block Interactions

  • Added most relevant blocks to anvil interaction tags.

  • Falling anvils and placed anvils can now break a much wider variety of blocks based on their assigned tags.

  • Includes both drop and no-drop variants for more precise control.

⚙️ New Mechanics

The deeper you are underwater, the more damage you take when you run out of oxygen. [cancelled due to unrealism]

Most survival mechanics have been rewritten from scratch for this update.

⚙️ Configuration

Added a config menu in the in-game Mods tab.

Config changes now apply immediately without restarting the game.

🔨 Anvil System

Partial implementation of anvil block destruction.

Future beta updates will expand this feature and reintroduce the items from the old 1.21.1 version.

🍖 Hunger System

Cooked food is intended to reduce hunger drain, but this mechanic is not yet fully functional.

🔄 Migration

This update is the result of the migration from Minecraft 1.21.1 to 1.21.4.

As part of this migration, several systems had to be reworked or temporarily reduced in functionality.

⚠️ Notes

This is a beta release, expect incomplete features and potential bugs.

The mod now requires another mod: Realism Tweaks Tag Lib.
