🔥 About

Inferno is the core mod of the Preserved mod set which aims to enhance various aspects of the Minecraft experience. Inferno aims to change and add to existing gameplay features to further enhance the survival portions of Minecraft's gameplay. With changes to core mechanics and the game's progression, this mod is perfect for those who want an elevated survival experience.

NOTE: This mod is best played blind. Reading the gameplay modifications past this point is NOT advised.

⛏️ Gameplay Modifications [SPOILERS]

Here is a brief look into what you can expect while playing this mod:
  • Reduced player power level
    • Most armor, tools, and weapons have been reduced in power.
    • Enchantments have been massively overhauled to reduce player strength.
    • Nerfs to all food items and saturation.
  • Reduced player progression speed
    • Ore generation has been changed to slow down the game.
    • More intermediate steps have been introduced to player progression.

⚙️ Modpack Usage

Inferno is free to be used in any custom mod packs as long as credit is provided. However, compatibility with existing mods has not been tested for, so use at your own risk.

This mod is updated using the most modern version of Minecraft. Previous versions are not supported.

Cauldron Changes

  • Lava, milk, powder snow, and honey are new fluid types that cauldrons can accept
  • All bottled fluids provide 1 unit of fluid to cauldrons
    • Reduced units of fluid provided by water bottles from 3 → 1
  • All bucketed fluids provide 8 units of fluid to cauldrons
  • Honey blocks provide 4 units of honey to cauldrons
  • Water and lava dripped from dripstone will now always add 1 unit of fluid to a cauldron beneath it when randomly ticked
  • Bee nests and beehives that are full of honey can now drip honey through dripstone
    • Honey dripped through dripstone will add 1 unit of honey to a cauldron beneath it when randomly ticked
  • Rain and snow will now always add 1 unit of fluid to a cauldron that is exposed to the sky
  • Added a new output slot for used bottles and buckets
  • Improved hopper compatibility with cauldrons
  • Cauldrons filled with lava will emit light

In-Cauldron Effects

  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 8 units of water will get extinguished and consume 8 units of water
  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 1 unit of lava will take lava damage
  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 8 units of powder snow will get extinguished
  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 8 units of powder snow will start freezing
    • If in the Nether, 1 unit will be consumed for every tick an entity stands in the cauldron
  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 8 units of honey will receive a continuous effect of hindered for 8 seconds
  • Any entity standing in a cauldron with at least 8 units of milk will have their potion effects removed and consume 8 units of milk

Cauldron Recipes

  • An empty bottle (with any fluid) will consume 1 fuel and turn into a filled bottle with the respective fluid
  • An empty bucket (with any fluid) will consume 8 fuel and turn into a filled bucket with the respective fluid
  • Any item that can be burned (with lava) will consume 1 fuel and incinerate the item

New Bottles

  • Milk and lava can now be put into bottles
  • Milk, lava, and honey bottles have splash and lingering variants
  • Milk bottles (including splash and lingering) will clear potion effects off of entities
  • Milk bottles will also reduce heat by 5 upon effect application
  • Lava bottles (including splash and lingering) will set entities on fire
  • Lava bottles will also increase heat by 5 upon effect application
  • Honey bottles (only splash and lingering) will apply 8 seconds of hindered to entities
  • Honey bottle stack size reduced from 16 → 4

World Generation Changes

  • Temperature range for desert and badland biomes have been increased
  • Temperature range for cold biomes have been increased slightly
  • Middle layouts generate much less often at low erosion values at mid, high, and peak slices
  • Middle layouts have mostly been replaced by slopes and plateau layouts
  • Simplified generation for dark forest and pale garden biomes
  • New biome: Old Growth Grove

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Freezing damage now ignores all damage reductions
  • Freezing damage attempt time has been reduced from 40 → 1 tick

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed lingering potions reducing heat on throw instead of on effect application
  • Fixed lingering potions dropping heat below 0 when used in the Nether
  • Fixed crafters being able to use unexhausted armor trims for the unexhaustion recipe for armor trims

Conduit Changes

  • Conduits now give incremental levels of conduit power based on how many prismarine blocks are surrounding it
    • 16 blocks will provide conduit power 1
    • 30 blocks will provide conduit power 2
    • 42 blocks will provide conduit power 3
  • Reduced fishing speed and luck bonuses from conduit power from 1 → 0.5
  • Fishing speed and luck from conduit power now scales linearly
  • Reduced bonus mining speed from conduit power from 20% → 5%
  • Bonus mining speed from conduit power now stacks additively with haste

Nautilus Changes

  • Breath of the Nautilus has been renamed to Nautilus Blessing
  • Nautilus Blessing now grants +0.5 fishing speed and +0.5 luck
  • Nautilus shells can now be used to brew nautilus blessing potions
    • Nautilus blessing potions are capped at level 1
  • Added advancements related to the nautilus

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Reduced amethyst cluster drops when mined with a pickaxe from 4 → 1
  • Reduced amethyst cluster drops when mined without a pickaxe from 2 → 1
  • Fortune now affects amethyst clusters in the same way that normal ores would be affected
  • Increased tinted glass recipe output from 2 → 4

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Squire and Knight mastery ranks not being rewarded retroactively
  • Fixed phantom sinew texture not being updated on the brewing guide
  • Fixed "Music Maestro" advancement missing its title and description
  • Fixed "Cover Me In Debris" advancement having the incorrect parent

Advancements Update

  • Updated the names of two mastery ranks
  • Added centurion rank after champion
  • Added 17 new advancements
  • Changed some advancements from have conditions to a craft condition

Path to Netherite Changes

  • Nether gold ore now drops 2-3 raw gold clumps instead of 1 raw gold
  • Increased netherite smithing template weight from piglin bartering from 5 → 8

The high return rate and frequency of nether gold ore has left overworld gold in a neglected state. These changes aim to keep the same return rates for netherite smithing templates while also reducing how much gold the player can farm purely from nether gold ore.

Piglin Bartering Changes

  • Reduced nether alloy smithing template weight from 5 → 2
  • Reduced raw hide drops from 2-4 → 1-2
  • Reduced crying obsidian drops from 2-4 → 1-2
  • Reduced string drops from 3-9 → 2-4
  • Reduced nether quartz drops from 3-5 → 1-2
  • Reduced iron nugget drops from 5-18 → 3-6

Bartering is the main path players will take for their path to netherite and with that they gain an excess amount of useful resources. While we want piglin trades to be useful, we don't want the other ways of obtaining these items to become obsolete.

Fortress Loot Changes

  • Reduced diamond weight from 10 → 5
  • Reduced quartz drops from 8-12 → 6-9
  • Reduced gold drops from 8-12 → 4-6
  • Reduced diamond drops from 2-4 → 1-2

With the extra roll being given to fortress loot, the amount of drops given has been reduced. Diamonds have also taken a bigger hit as we have seen too many of them generate from fortresses even before the loot buff.

Wandering Trader Changes

  • Replaced resin clump trade with resin speck trade
  • Added repair kits to the premium selling table
  • Reduced most prices on item to emerald trades

Despite being a nuisance, we still want the wandering trader to have value to the player at all stages of the game. The constant need for repair kits should keep the player interested in checking the wandering trader.

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Updated textures for phantom sinew, dreamcatcher, rhyolite, and polished rhyolite
  • Added rhyolite bricks and its variants
  • Slime block and slime ball recipes now match other compacted block recipes
  • Bamboo block recipe now matches other compacted block recipes
  • Reduced bamboo plank output from 2 → 1
  • Raw ore blocks now drop their raw ore items when broken without silk touch
  • Increased elytra cooldown when damaged from 8 → 12 seconds
  • Increased flight rocket cooldown from 8 → 12 seconds
  • Shift-using a stack of reverb compasses will now link the entire stack instead of just one
  • Recovery compass now shows distance like other compasses
  • Phantoms are now repelled by open eyeblossoms

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed "Wax Off" advancement having the wrong icon
  • Fixed shears not playing a break sound when they break in a loom
  • Fixed loom consuming shears durability when used in creative
  • Fixed loyalty being able to be applied onto a riptide trident in an enchanting table
  • Fixed an inventory wipe when players die while blocking with a shield

Improved Respawning

  • Increased respawning health value from 10 → 12
  • Increased respawning hunger value from 10 → 12
  • If a player dies with less than 12 hunger points, they will respawn with the amount of hunger points they had before dying. (with a minimum of 6 hunger points)
  • If a player dies with less than 12 hunger points, they will respawn with 1 point of saturation instead of the normal amount.
  • If a player spawns at a bed:
    • Increase respawning health value from 12 → 16
    • Increase respawning hunger value from 12 → 16
    • If a player dies with less than 16 hunger points, they will respawn with the same amount of hunger points they had before dying. (minimum of 10 hunger points)
    • If a player dies with less than 10 hunger points, they will respawn with 1 point of saturation instead of the normal amount.

While we still want to punish the player for dying, we have found that death has felt too punishing and unfair at certain points. This change aims to add some relief to players who die unexpectedly while still punishing those who attempt to die on purpose. Beds have also been given some changes to respawn mechanics as we have seen that their impact is still quite low despite the effort it takes to obtain one.

Shovel Weapon Implementation

  • Increased all shovel attack damage by 0.5
  • Reduced all shovel attack speed from 1.5 → 1.4
  • New enchantment: Splattering
    • Increase all critical damage by 3
    • Exclusive to shovels

External Mod Compatibility

  • Added Jade support for modded blocks
  • Added Lootr support for some modded advancements

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Added an exception to player loot drops for frogs eating mobs
  • Added an exception to player loot drops for skeletons killing creepers
  • Increased all multitool attack speed from 0.6 → 0.8
  • Increased all pickaxe attack damage by 1
  • Updated all multitool textures
  • Increased gold nugget drops from all stages of sparkling blackstone by 2x
  • Removed "Uneasy Alliance" advancement
  • Added "Uneasy Betrayal" advancement

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed items being able to be repaired using their matching materials
  • Fixed haste and mining fatigue potions being unable to be turned into their splash variants
  • Fixed placing bamboo not counting towards the "Green Thumb" advancement
  • Fixed players from being able to keep their shield up after putting it on cooldown with the Bashful enchantment
  • Fixed stamina recovery not being put on cooldown when losing stamina through the Bashful enchantment
  • Fixed shields not breaking when the player is at 0 stamina
  • Fixed the farmer villager's wheat trade requiring raw copper instead
  • Fixed the elytra not being put on cooldown when taking damage while in the player's inventory
  • Fixed the elytra being put on cooldown when taking 0 damage

Repair Kits and Forge Dust

  • The repair kit is a new item that can be crafted using a bone, string, leather, and any color of cloth
  • The repair kit will restore a set percentage of an item's durability depending on its material when used in an anvil
    • The more powerful the tool, the more repair kits you'll need to fully repair the item
  • Forge dust is another new item that be crafted using a lapis lazuli, amethyst shard, glowstone dust, and gunpowder
  • Forge dust can be specialized with the material of the tool you are trying to repair
  • Forge dust will always repair a third of the item's durability when combined with in an anvil

Anvil Changes

  • Items can no longer be repaired using their matching material types
  • Repairing items by using another matching item will no longer carry over enchantments
  • Reduced the cost to repair items in an anvil from 10 → 1 enchantment levels
  • Anvil costs will now specify what the cost of the action is
  • Added a new advancement related to repairing items

Zombified Piglin Changes

  • Reduced zombified piglin heat to detection radius multiplier from 0.4 → 0.3
  • Zombified piglins now have a minimum heat detection of 25 before they will track players
  • Zombified piglins will now agress onto the player when hit
  • Increased max health from 12 → 14

Zombified piglins have felt overwhelming right out of the gate. Hopefully these changes should help them still feel threatening without making them oppressive.

Fortress Loot Changes

  • Added nether quartz to the loot table
  • Added golden leggings and boots to the loot table
  • Modified rolls for gold ingots slightly
  • Added an extra roll to the fortress chest loot pool

While mining may be the main way to grind towards netherite, we want to add more paths that allow the player to reach that goal, including structure exploration.

Tool Changes

  • Increased quartzite tool mining efficiency from 6 → 8
  • Increased quartzite tool durability from 64 → 128
  • Increased golden tool mining efficiency from 9 → 12
  • Increased golden tool durability from 128 → 256
  • Increased nether alloy mining efficiency from 12 → 16
  • Increased nether alloy durability from 256 → 512
  • Reduced netherite tool mining efficiency from 18 → 16

These tool sidegrades have been underperforming in testing. Hopefully these changes can assist players in their intended purpose of resource gathering.

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Heat will now be reduced by half upon death (rounded down)
    • Retained heat value cannot be 100 or greater
  • Advancement toast text will now match the color they are in chat
  • Bashful enchantment will now use 1 durability upon use
  • Sculk catalysts are now affected by fortune
  • Added fishing rod part tooltip to fishing rods

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed "Lava Chicken" music disc not dropping from chicken jockeys
  • Fixed Goal advancements granting 3 mastery points instead of 4
  • Fixed multitools not granting the "Just Like New" advancement when scraping oxidized copper
  • Fixed multitools not granting the "Lighten Up" advancement when scraping a copper bulb
  • Fixed multitools not having their efficiency values displayed in their tooltips
  • Fixed wandering trader having the incorrect lapis trade
  • Fixed depth strider not having the ability to be applied to boots via the enchanting table
  • Fixed respiration not having the ability to be applied to helmets via the enchanting table
  • Fixed piglins not being drawn towards golden multitools
  • Fixed quartzite and nether alloy tools not having advancement recipes
  • Fixed unbreaking not working properly on fishing rod parts

Reverb Compass

  • Reverb compasses can be made using a compass and an echo shard
    • When linked to a lodestone (by using it on one) the player can remotely warp on top of the linked lodestone
    • On use, the reverb compass will unlink and revert back into a normal compass
  • Reverb compasses cannot transport players through dimensions
  • Added one advancement related to the reverb compass

Compass and Clock Changes

  • Compasses will now state how far the player is from spawn in the action bar
    • The distance will be shown in meters (default setting)
    • Units used can be changed in the mod config
  • Lodestone compasses have the same effect but track the distance to the linked lodestone instead
  • Reduced the cost of the compass recipe
  • Clocks will now state the exact time in the player's action bar
    • Time is measured using the 24 hour system (default setting)
    • Time measurement can be changed in the mod config
  • Reduced the cost of the clock recipe

Elytra Changes

  • Taking damage will disable the elytra for 8 seconds
  • Using flight rockets with the elytra will now put the rockets on cooldown for 8 seconds

Added Config Settings

  • Mod configs can now be changed via command or through Mod Menu
    • Command and its aliases: /inferno, /pinferno, /preservedinferno

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Reduced shield damage threshold for losing durability from 3 → 1
  • Heat will no longer drop below 1 while in the Nether
  • Rabbits no longer take fall damage
  • Increased turtle shell armor toughness from 1 → 3
  • Increased turtle shell durability from 512 → 1024
  • Rotten flesh can now be smelted into leather fabric

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed heat bar overlapping with the breath meter when the player has infinite water breath
  • Fixed "Strange Structure" advancement not triggering on all ruined portal variants
  • Fixed "Who's the Pillager Now" advancement being missing
  • Fixed "How Did We Get Here" advancement being missing
  • Fixed villagers giving the same amount of villager xp for all trades
  • Fixed villagers not having capped trade slots
  • Fixed villagers adding trade slots instead of rerolling them on refresh

The Garden Reawakens

  • Pale gardens have been changed to spawn outside of plateaus and are now much more common
  • Pale gardens now have biome fog
  • All hostile mobs excluding Zombies and the Creaking have been removed from the spawning pool in the pale garden
  • Pale garden blocks are no longer flammable and no longer catch fire from lava
  • Increased block hardness of pale oak logs, wood, and their stripped variants from 2 -> 5
  • Increased block hardness of creaking hearts from 10 -> 22.5

Creaking Reborn

  • The creaking will now deal true damage (ignores armor and damage resistance)
    • Easy: 1.5 damage
    • Normal: 3 damage
    • Hard: 6 damage
  • The creaking will now apply hindered to the player on hit for 3 seconds
  • Breaking resin will now drop resin specks instead of resin clumps
  • Resin specks (4) can be combined to make resin clumps
  • Creaking hearts can no longer be obtained through silk touch
  • Creaking hearts will now drop resin specks instead of resin clumps

With new incentives to interact with the Pale Garden, the biome and the creaking have gotten massive overhauls to make the "hunting" experience more interactive. True damage makes the creaking a threat to the player, no matter what stage of the game you are in and the hinder makes a creaking ambush much more deadly.

Multitools

  • Multitools can be crafted using 4 different tools (of the same material) and 5 resin bricks
  • Crafting a multitool will not carry over any durability or enchantments
  • Multitools share the same properties and functionalities of axes, pickaxes, scythes, and shovels
    • Using this item on dirt will create farmland normally, shifting while using will create a path block
  • Multitools can still be repaired using their respective materials
  • Multitools only support the efficiency, unbreaking, silk touch, and fortune enchantments

Multitools are a common trope that has been used in many other mods, but Inferno intends to implement them in a unique way. Using the sticky properties of resin, players can now combine their tools into one using the material, giving the player new reason to explore and find a pale garden.

Sparkling Blackstone

  • Sparkling blackstone is a new block that can be found in bastion remnants
  • Sparkling blackstone will evolve over time (similar to budding amethyst)
  • Sparkling blackstone will NOT drop upon being broken
  • Mining it will degrade its value by 1 and drop an amount of gold nuggets depending on the stage it was broken at
  • Some of the hidden gold blocks in bastion remnants have been replaced with sparkling blackstone

We wanted to create more player interactivity between existing structures and sparkling blackstone is our first attempt at that with bastions. Since players need a ton of gold to trade for netherite smithing templates, adding a consistent source of gold that the player can rely on can help ease that grind.

Trident Changes

  • Increased copper trident base damage from 8 -> 9
  • Increased copper trident thrown damage from 8 -> 9
  • Increased copper trident riptide damage from 6 -> 8
  • Increased trident base damage from 10 -> 12
  • Increased trident thrown damage from 10 -> 12
  • Increased trident riptide damage from 9 -> 11

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Added wheat to pumpkin pie recipe
  • Increased iron golem armor points from 0 -> 25
  • Increased block hardness of deepslate iron ore from 8 -> 9
  • Added new advancements related to the pale garden and multitools

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed crying obsidian not creating nether portals when interacted with from the sides or bottom
  • Fixed piglins not being drawn towards modded, golden items
  • Fixed brewing stand recipe guide having random off colored pixels
  • Fixed slow falling potion in the brewing stand recipe guide using phantom membrane instead of phantom sinew
  • Fixed baby wolves and baby dogs having the incorrect amount of health
  • Fixed baby horses, donkeys, and mules having the incorrect amount of health
  • Fixed reinforced wooden doors not favoring axes when breaking
  • Fixed critical hits being applied to non-weapons
  • Fixed ancient debris block hardness not being correct

Gameplay Changes

  • Increased chainmail helmet armor points from 9 -> 10
  • Increased chainmail helmet armor toughness from 0 -> 1
  • Decreased chainmail chestplate armor points from 20 -> 16
  • Decreased chainmail chestplate armor toughness from 2 -> 1
  • Increased chainmail boots armor points from 6 -> 9
  • Increased chainmail boots armor toughness from 0 -> 1

Chainmail armor has been modified to act as an median stage between copper and iron and will now be used as early game loot similarly to how gold armor is used in the mid-game.

Minor Changes

  • Updated underwater ruin chest loot table
    • Coal has been replaced with charcoal
    • Golden helmet has been replaced with chainmail helmet
  • Changed "Monumental Mystery" advancement icon
  • Crying obsidian can now be used to create nether portals

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed piglins not being distracted and picking up gold items
  • Fixed max speed requirement for "Speed Demon" advancement so it is completable
  • Fixed brown and blue eggs not stacking to 64
  • Fixed heat damage crediting the player as the damage source
