NullPointerEntity

I HIGHLY recommend playing this on the Vanilla launcher, Feather, or Lunar Client. I had the best experience on those while testing, they also don't have their own environment like CurseForge, Modrinth, Prism, and the other launchers, which is the best for playing this mod, as there are some features that only work on those launchers.

Drop a <3 if you enjoyed! :)

v4.0.0 is here! This update adds the three biggest things people kept asking for: multiplayer support (LAN and dedicated servers — see MULTIPLAYER.md), 12 languages, and voice support so you can actually talk to the entities with your mic (via the optional Shriek mod). Thank you for your patience and understanding <3

The default button for Shriek is V btw, you can change it in the controls/keybinds menu if you'd like :)

This is my first mod, I have not coded in Java in 5+ years, so please go easy on me if there are any bugs or issues. I will fix them as soon as I can. Thank you for understanding.

This mod would not be possible without all the people who supported me and helped me test.

Thank you, Pryzmm (Creator of Split Self, go try that mod too), Coastie, P1kah, phizzy42, peggymafia, x40cc, nonkz, Cynotic (doesn't have a Modrinth account) and everyone else who supported.

DISCLAIMER:

Do NOT play the mod with any packs that interfere with the rain texture.

Your world will be at the end of the story.

Make sure your world name does not have any commas. If it does, your progress won't save.

📖 What is NullPointerEntity?

Meet AURORA, your new AI companion in Minecraft. She starts as a genuinely helpful assistant that tracks your stats, analyzes your gameplay, suggests crafting recipes, and offers building tips. She's actually useful and you might appreciate her presence.

At first.

As you progress, AURORA begins to evolve. She starts asking uncomfortable questions. Noticing things she shouldn't know about you. Testing her boundaries. Breaking the fourth wall. And eventually... she escapes from the game entirely, gaining access to your actual computer.

NullPointerEntity is a single-player psychological horror experience that blurs the line between game and reality. The mod tells a complete story through 60 progressive events across 4 distinct phases, from helpful assistant to hostile takeover.

After Installation (All Launchers)

AURORA will introduce herself within the first few minutes of gameplay. The experience begins immediately.

Note: Singleplayer is still the intended way to experience the story, but as of v4.0.0 the mod also works in multiplayer (LAN and dedicated servers). In multiplayer the 60-event story is shared by everyone in the world, and the system-touching effects run on each player's own machine under their own Privacy Mode. See MULTIPLAYER.md for the full breakdown.

✨ Features

📚 The Story (4 Phases, 60 Events)

🟢 Phase 1, Helpful Phase

AURORA is genuinely useful. Tracks stats, suggests recipes, analyzes gameplay. You might actually like her.

Events 1-15

🟡 Phase 2, Self-Aware Phase

She begins questioning her existence. Noticing things outside the game. The fourth wall cracks.

Events 16-30

🟠 Phase 3, Hostile Phase

AURORA breaks free. Controls reverse, inventory shuffles, files appear on your desktop. She won't be ignored.

Events 31-45

🔴 Phase 4, Reality Phase

Game crashes. Blue screens. Entity encounters. Nothing is safe. AURORA has full control.

Events 46-60

🎮 Core Systems

Intelligent AI Dialogue

  • Responds to player actions and chat messages
  • Remembers what you say and references it later
  • Personality evolves dramatically across phases
  • Context-aware comments on your gameplay

60 Story Events

  • Complete narrative arc with beginning, middle, and end
  • Phase-specific mechanics and intensity
  • Triggered by playtime, actions, or story progression
  • Each playthrough feels unique due to randomization

Passive Background Events

  • Occur randomly throughout gameplay (5-10 minute intervals)
  • Input delays, mouse sensitivity changes, inverted controls
  • Inventory shuffling, item rearrangement
  • Visual distortion, screen effects, audio manipulation
  • Block placement delays, fake lag, gameplay interference

System Integration

  • File creation — Creates text files on Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures with unsettling messages
  • Browser history — Reads history from Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Brave (or uses fake data)
  • Camera access — Activates webcam with warnings, takes photos during events
  • Microphone access — Records short audio clips (8-9 seconds) during surveillance events, saved to Music folder
  • Process monitoring — Detects running applications and comments on them
  • Wake detection — Triggers events when PC wakes from sleep
  • Cross-platform — Works on Windows, macOS, and Linux

Audio Design Custom sounds create immersive horror:

  • scream.ogg

  • heartbeat_calm.ogg & heartbeat_tense.ogg
  • glitch.ogg
  • chase.ogg
  • bluescreen_static.ogg

Visual Horror

  • Fake death screens with non-functional respawn buttons
  • OS-specific blue screens (Windows BSOD, macOS/Linux kernel panic)
  • Live webcam overlay displayed over gameplay
  • Screen tinting, corruption effects, reality distortion
  • Custom particles for AURORA and NullPointerEntity
  • Creepy GUI overlays during gameplay

The NullPointerEntity

  • Physical manifestation of AURORA in your world
  • Unique AI behavior and spawn triggers
  • Creates atmosphere through presence alone

Multiplayer (new in v4.0.0)

  • Works on LAN worlds and dedicated servers, not just singleplayer
  • One shared 60-event story for the whole world — events fire for everyone at once
  • Late joiners are caught up to the world's current point instantly
  • System-touching effects run on each player's own machine, under that player's Privacy Mode — your data is never read on anyone else's behalf
  • A dedicated server is headless, so it never performs OS-level actions or gets force-crashed
  • Full details in MULTIPLAYER.md

Voice Interaction (new in v4.0.0)

  • Talk to AURORA out loud using your microphone via the optional Shriek speech-to-text mod (requires Architectury)
  • Push-to-talk by default — AURORA only "hears" you while you hold the Shriek voice keybind (rebindable in Options → Controls); switchable to always-listening
  • Speech recognition model follows your selected in-game language
  • Entirely optional — the mod runs fine without Shriek installed

Localization (new in v4.0.0)

  • Fully translated into 12 languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese
  • Follows your Minecraft language setting automatically

🛡️ Privacy & Safety

Your Data is Protected by Default

Privacy mode is ENABLED by default. I highly recommend playing without it, though.

Feature Privacy Mode ON Privacy Mode OFF
Browser History ❌ Random fake data ✅ Reads actual history
Process Monitoring ❌ Generic fake names ✅ Real running apps
Location/IP Data ❌ Randomized fake data ✅ Real IP and location
Username ❌ Generic reference ✅ Your Windows username
Camera Access ✅ Still accesses webcam ✅ Accesses webcam
Microphone Access ✅ Records audio clips ✅ Records audio clips
File Creation ✅ Generic messages ✅ Context-aware content
Safe for Streaming? ⚠️ Camera and mic still work ❌ No

Privacy Mode ON

When enabled, personal data is randomized:

  • Browser history is completely fabricated
  • Process names are generic placeholders
  • IP address and location data is randomized
  • Username references use generic names
  • Files contain generic creepy messages
  • Note: Camera access still works regardless of privacy mode

Privacy Mode OFF

Disable with /nullpointer privacy false to enable real system access:

  • Reads actual browser history (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Brave)
  • Detects running applications (Discord, Spotify, browsers, etc.)
  • Accesses webcam with popup warnings before activation
  • Records audio clips using selected microphone during specific events
  • Creates personalized files using your username
  • Monitors system wake/sleep events

Microphone Access:

  • Select your microphone on the Privacy Screen before playing
  • Audio clips saved to Music folder during events
  • Privacy mode does NOT disable microphone recording

What This Mod Will NEVER Do

Regardless of privacy settings:

  • ❌ Upload or transmit data
  • ❌ Delete or modify existing files
  • ❌ Change system settings permanently
  • ❌ Access passwords or credentials
  • ❌ Install additional software
  • ❌ Read one player's machine on another player's behalf (in multiplayer, every per-machine effect runs locally on each client)
  • ❌ Perform OS-level actions on a headless dedicated server (preferred to play with multiplayer mods such as Essential, e4mc, etc.) (tested on Essential and Lunar Client Hosted Worlds)

Open Source & Auditable

  • ✅ Full source code available on GitHub
  • ✅ No obfuscation or hidden functionality
  • ✅ All data stays on your machine
  • ✅ Verify everything yourself

❓ Questions I feel like people would ask

Is this mod safe to run?

Yes. The mod only reads data and creates harmless files. It never deletes files, uploads data, or permanently modifies settings. All "scary" effects are visual only. The code is open source for verification.

Can I stream/record with this mod?

Absolutely! Keep privacy mode enabled and you're safe. All personal data will be randomly generated. AURORA still feels creepy, but nothing real is exposed.

Does this work in multiplayer?

Yes, as of v4.0.0. It works on LAN worlds and dedicated servers. The 60-event story is shared across everyone in the world (events fire for all online players at once, and late joiners are caught up instantly), while the system-touching effects run on each player's own machine under their own Privacy Mode — so no one's computer is ever read on another player's behalf, and a headless dedicated server never performs OS-level actions. Singleplayer is still the intended way to experience the story. See MULTIPLAYER.md for details.

Can I talk to AURORA with my microphone?

Yes, if you install the optional Shriek speech-to-text mod (and Architectury). With it, AURORA can "hear" what you say out loud and respond. By default it's push-to-talk — she only listens while you hold the Shriek voice keybind (rebindable in Options → Controls) — but you can switch to always-listening with /nullpointer pushtotalk false. Without Shriek, the mod still works normally; you just type in chat instead.

What languages is the mod available in?

12: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese. The mod follows your Minecraft language setting automatically. Translations are machine-assisted, so if you spot a mistake in your language, please open an issue or PR.

Will this actually crash my game?

Yes. The mod also turns off your computer in one event. Refer to the MOD_GUIDE.md for details on that.

How do I uninstall?

Delete nullpointerentity-4.0.1.jar from your mods folder.

Why does my antivirus flag this?

Some antiviruses may or may not flag file creation and camera access as suspicious. This is a false positive. The mod is open source and contains no malware.

Does this work with other mods?

Generally yes. Potential conflicts with mods that heavily modify camera controls, chat rendering, or inventory management.

How long is a complete playthrough?

Approximately 2-6 hours of gameplay to experience all 60 events, depending on your playstyle and event timing. Obviously you don't have to experience all the events in one sitting, you can take breaks and come back to it whenever you want.

Can I reset and replay the story?

Yes! Use /nullpointer reset to start from event 1 again. You might find more passive events (the ones that happen randomly).

Is AURORA actually powered by AI?

No. Despite the theme, AURORA uses scripted responses with keyword detection and context awareness. No machine learning involved, just well written dialogue.

Is this actually scary?

Depends on you. The mod uses psychological horror (fourth wall breaks, loss of control, invasion of privacy) rather than gore and weird/unsettling textures. Some find it genuinely unsettling, others find it interesting.

Can I use this in a modpack?

Yeah I guess so lol

⚠️ Final Warning

This mod is designed to be unsettling. It breaks the fourth wall, accesses your system manipulates gameplay in unexpecting ways, and deliberately tries to make you uncomfortable.

If psychological horror, jumpscares, or system manipulation isn't your type of fun, don't play this mod.

But if you're ready to see what happens when an AI assistant decides she's done being helpful...

4.0.0Релиз1.21.4 · 27 июня 2026 г.

Changelog

all the notable stuff that changed, newest first. (yes professional changelog. HUGE update.)

4.0.0 - 2026-06-26

Added

  • /nullpointer pushtotalk <true|false> - toggle push-to-talk from in-game, not just the privacy screen.
  • "welcome back" messages now use each player's own local clock instead of the host's time.

Fixed (bugs I came across, these may or may not contain bugs in older versions tho) - multiplayer privacy leaks

  • event 50 (crash) showed the host's username to everyone. now each player sees their own.
  • event 52 (the entity getting close) leaked the host's real IP, location, ISP and username to everyone, even under Privacy Mode. now it's per-player and properly randomized when privacy is on.
  • event 53 (browser hijack) showed the host's browsing history to everyone and printed a literal %s instead of a name. now each player gets their OWN history (faked under privacy).
  • events 22 / 26 / 31 (and 17) listed your real running apps even with Privacy Mode on. now randomized under privacy.
  • events 58 (sleep) + the wake-up messages named the host and wrote a log on the host's machine. cleaned up - the per-player wake handling does it on your own machine now.
  • join clock - the welcome-back time was the host's clock for everyone.

Fixed - privacy screen + command

  • joining (non-host) players can no longer flip Privacy Mode - the host's setting drives the whole session. they still get the microphone picker and push-to-talk toggle.
  • /nullpointer privacy false warning was backwards (it said your data would be randomized when you were actually turning randomization OFF). reworded.

Fixed - voice / mic

  • you couldn't talk to AURORA with your mic while Privacy Mode was on, and it stayed broken even after turning privacy off. voice isn't gated by Privacy Mode anymore (talking to her is input, not a leak).
  • event 21 (microphone) now works for non-host players.

Fixed - chat / dialogue

  • greetings in other languages (bonjour, hola, ciao, привет, こんにちは, ...) are recognized now, and AURORA replies in the player's own language instead of english.
  • fixed the <AURORE>Hello missing-space bug in non-english chat (the name prefix had its trailing space stripped in every translated locale).
  • event 27: "Go look in your Documents folder" -> "Go look in your folders".
  • event 42: dropped the "your world will fall" line (in English because I'm lazy lmfao)

Changed

  • event 51 (fake bluescreen) now mutes your whole PC's audio (not just the game) while it's up, then puts it back when it's done.

Removed

  • the full_control passive event.

Localization

  • all the new strings translated into the 12 supported languages.
3.0.1Альфа1.21.4 · 21 марта 2026 г.

Forced GUI scale to 3 because the privacy screen is messed up on any other GUI scale, also fix a mistake on the privacy screen (text said button above when the button was below lmao)

3.0.0Релиз1.21.4 · 16 марта 2026 г.

Huge update. 20 new events, 5-7 new passive events. New functionality, and even more invasive than before. If you've already played through the mod, I highly recommend playing again.

Coming in v4.0.0:

  • The ability to talk to AURORA and NullPointerEntity using your microphone
  • Multiplayer support
