Overview:

This is a lightweight, configurable horror mod that adds an unsettling entity to the caves.

This entity never seeks you out, nor can it directly kill you. Rather, it lurks in the caves, usually just out of sight, waiting for you to find it.

Behaviors:

(Everything here is configurable!)

Spoiler

Light Sensitivity:
The entity will vanish if the light level is too high. While vanished, it cannot harm you in any way. If the light is removed, the entity will reappear.

Torch Destruction:
As of version 1.1.2, the entity will now occasionally break torches near it while it is invisible.

Aggression:
If a player approaches the entity in low light, it will lunge at them, making a startling noise. After lunging, the entity has a low chance (15% by default) to reduce its target's health to 1.

Scopophobia:
As of version 1.2.3, the entity will become agitated if you look directly at it for too long.

Spawn Conditions:
The entity cannot spawn near another of its kind, so encounters are few and far between. Additionally, it cannot spawn aboveground by default, nor can it spawn in any excessive light level.

Notes:

Encounters with the entity are deliberately rare. If you’d like to see it more often, reduce minimumDistance in the config.

I recommend playing this mod with lower brightness settings or shaders that darken caves; even in the lowest possible light level, high gamma settings can dampen the suspense. To be clear, your personal brightness settings will not alter the entity's behavior.

Fixed spawn conditions being ignored. Entity spawns should now be correctly restricted to caves and other dark spaces (unless otherwise allowed by the config).

The entity will now attempt to perform a jumpscare if the target player stares at it for too long (6 seconds by default).
(Thanks to Alexander25 for suggesting this feature!)

The entity becomes visibly agitated when the target player stares at it (configurable).

Tweaked the walk animation again.

The entity is no longer rendered as a baby. Whoops...

Slightly alterered the walking behavior so that the entity tries to stop moving when it reaches the warning radius.

Slightly tweaked the walking animation.

The entity no longer takes fall damage.

I am hoping to make a more feature-rich update for the 4k download milestone.

Added a chance for certain instances of the entity to not emit ambient sounds (configurable).

Added an extremely rare chance for certain instances of the entity to be able to walk towards their target (configurable).

The entity can no longer be hit or shot while it is invisible.

The entity can no longer attack through walls.

Significantly refactored the code, which should boost performance and multiplayer feasibility.

Slightly increased the default value for torchBreakChance and minimumDistance in the config.

Added a new config category that includes settings relating to audio.

Changed the breath config from a toggle to a range, allowing the volume to be set.

The breath sound no longer plays while the entity is invisible. I might make this feature configurable in the future.

Fixed a small issue where the entity would not correctly face its target during an attack.

While it is invisible, the entity will now break nearby torches until it is visible again (configurable).

Added a "jumpscareChance" option to the config. When the chance fails, the entity will instead silently disappear.

"nothing_there/tags/blocks/light_sources.json" controls what blocks the entity can break. By default, only vanilla torches and lanterns are included.
