Nightmare Mode is an addon for Better Than Wolves CE 3.X that makes the mod a LOT harder, with focus on extreme difficulty, unforgiving mobs and reducing farming tedium. NM features new mobs, reworked mechanics and boss overhauls.

Minecraft's Hardest Mod?

Nightmare Mode

is an addon for Better Than Wolves CE 3.X that raises the difficulty to its extreme. ALL mobs are buffed out of their mind, and survival becomes a brutal challenge (even for experienced BTW players). To compensate for this, a lot of the tech / farming tedium of the original Better Than Wolves has been made optional.

Features:

  • You spawn at night
  • Mobs get stronger as you progress through the milestones (nether, wither, dragon)
  • Your items violently explode after dying
  • Mobs regenerate health naturally ( + faster than you do)
  • They see through walls and have a larger aggro radius (up to 48 blocks, which is 3x vanilla Minecraft)
  • All Mobs have improved AI and capabilities (Zombies can break blocks, Skeletons can jumpshot, Creepers leap before exploding, Endermen teleport you around, Spiders poison you, Squids attack through walls ...)
  • Blood Moons (in Hardmode), and Solar Eclipses (post-Dragon), with unique mobs and loot
  • Activating a Nether Portal starts Hardmode, where all Mobs get buffed and new ones start spawning. Defeating the Wither and Dragon also cause permanent buffs and gameplay changes (eg. Steel becomes minable, but every night is a Gloom night)
  • QoL blocks and items, such as early game Bandages, Knitting Needles, and late game Road & Asphalt
  • All Hardcore elements of Better Than Wolves - Survival is near-impossible and much more.

Mob Variants

Mob variants are special versions of Mobs that have unique abilities or mechanics. They're often direct upgrades to the Mob they are a variant of. Variants have a chance of spawning in place of the original Mob. For example:

  • Fire Creeper : They are slightly faster, have shorter fuse, and spawn fire on their explosions. Their explosions are larger if they are on fire.
  • Shadow Zombie : Spawns in Hardmode (Post-Nether). They can teleport to the player from up to 16 blocks away (ignoring walls). They are immune to fall damage, suffocation, arrows and don't take knockback.
  • Blood Zombie : Spawns only on Gloom Nights (when it's pitch black and the player needs light to survive). They have unlimited player seeking range, high speed and faster block breaking. They can drop raw meat on death. And many, many more.

Expectations

Nightmare Mode is the mod you were promised by those clickbait Youtube thumbnails. Expect to die a lot. It's a tough learning curve. Most players give up before reaching the crafting table (3-5 hours of playtime in a single world). The expected time to complete is 100-120 hours (on a single world) and hundreds of attempts.

🎉✨ Bug fixes, new Mobs and TWO YEARS ON GITHUB 🎉✨

A relatively small update from v1.1.4 that fixes many of its bugs, adds some new content, and introduces features to support the ongoing Multiplayer and NM Config Mode efforts within the community.

Today marks the 2 year anniversary of this github project. NM originally started development around june 15th of 2024, but the github repository was created june 26th. It makes me really happy seeing how far this project has come. Hopefully I'll be able to develop it even further throughout college. Now for the changelog:

🍄 Mob Related Features:

  • Mush Worms have been completely reworked:
    • only spawn from Red Mushrooms
    • no longer spread into regular Silverfish
    • can no longer be used for clay or XP farms
    • no longer appear in excessive numbers from giant mushrooms
  • Added four new More Variants exclusive mobs:
    • Glitch Creeper: kicks the player from their world after exploding. harmless
    • Sticky Creeper: very low health, causes the player to drop their held item when hit
    • Void Creeper: creates a Black Hole on death. it pulls entities in and then explodes
    • Lightning Skeleton: fragile but fires lightning arrows, spawning more frequently during storms
  • Tooled Mobs will now leap toward players standing on unreachable terrain, making towering and high-ground strategies far less reliable
  • Creepers now intelligently decide when to jump, allowing them to better punish players camping above them while avoiding pointless jumps when the player is below
  • Skeleton variants now properly use their intended stats. this is mostly a buff

⚔️ Gameplay Changes:

  • added Random Events, bringing occasional special days with unique gameplay and effects
  • Mobs now drop more XP as the world progresses
  • enchanting costs roughly 30% less XP on the regular enchantment table
  • The Wither drops substantially more XP the first time it is killed
  • added crafting recipes to empty Planters and Potions, returning the empty container
  • Zombies break blocks significantly faster during Blood Moons
  • added a new immersive vignette effect during dangerous situations such as Blood Moons, boss fights, darkness and caving
  • various damage sources now bypass armor and additionally drain hunger, making environmental hazards and certain enemies more threatening. don't hug the saw

🖥️ UI & User Experience:

  • added a bunch of EMI integration, including:
    • item and block descriptions
    • food values
    • Eclipse Item category
    • changed EMI entries for existing BTW / Vanilla blocks / items to reflect their use in NM
  • added custom audio for major events such as Blood Moons and the Bloodwither fight. massive shoutout to @heyitsjd3 on discord for the sound design
  • reverted Blood Moon visuals to the old style after community feedback, updated sky and weather effects
  • added creative-mode utilities for equipping mobs with armor and weapons for testing
  • reorganized config difficulty ranking after community feedback

🤝 Multiplayer:

  • added configurable Grief Logging, allowing server owners to record actions such as destroying containers, igniting TNT and other potentially destructive player activity. is that a grief reference?!
  • added support for multiplayer-exclusive recipes
  • signs are now significantly easier to craft on multiplayer servers
  • fixed several multiplayer issues, including horse armor crashes and improved synchronization of world events

🛠️ Fixes

  • fixed a bug that would allow eclipse zombies to summon thousands of jungle spiders & silverfish when killed automatically (piratebananaraman1)
  • fixed mobs incorrectly dropping leather and wool armor (finally)
  • prevented Blood Moon zombies from destroying End Portal Frames and other critical blocks
  • fixed the HUD rendering (the time / date, active configs + status effects)
  • numerous backend improvements and internal optimizations laying the groundwork for future updates

How many things do you recognize?

HEADLINE CHANGES

This version was partly a maintenance release, but also did a lot of things from the ground up and polished many aspects of the mod. You can just look at the file size, down from like 14mb to just 8. It's small enough to be sent as a Discord attachment 🥳

HEADLINE CHANGES:

  • Increased the dangers of mushroom islands

    • Made Mooshrooms much stronger and unmilkable
    • New Hostile Mob: Mush Worm. Spawns on mushroom islands, behaves like a regular silverfish, infests mushroom blocks and spawns a cloud of poison when killed.
    • Mycelium no longer blocks mob spawning
    • Brown Mushrooms as a resource have been moved to Hardmode, meaning any recipes that include them are also hardmode-exclusive
  • Tweaked Nether Mobs

    • Ghasts fire slower (+3 ticks) and have smaller explosions pre-Hardmode
    • Pigmen attack players wearing Gold Armor. The armor only reduces their aggro range
  • Early Game Tweaks

    • Crops (raw & cooked) heal way less food (LeonTalksALot)
    • Flint n Steel is now post-crafting table, requiring 2 Flint and 3 nuggets to make
    • Zombie's digging speed increases the more time it spends breaking blocks. It calms down naturally over time
  • New GUI Features

    • Added a Create New World button in the main menu that immediately puts you in a new world. the settings for these worlds can be adjusted in the world info menu, accessible by pressing the gear icon.
    • Added the ability to Favorite ⭐ worlds, so they always show up at the top of your list

This is a hotfix which ports NM to Better Than Wolves CE 3.1.0

  • Fixed: Blazes can no longer lunge at players outside their aggro radius
  • Fixed: Lightning Creepers can no longer spawn inside walls
  • Skeleton Melee & Ranged attack share the same cooldown. Their melee attack previously could combo into their ranged attack and felt too strong
  • Fixed: Zombies can no longer get stuck breaking leaves. This allowed for some exploits around trees
  • Fixed: Hostile Mob regeneration cooldown is properly reset when the mob is hit. Previously they'd heal while in combat, effectively giving them 1-3 more HP
  • Temporarily removed the Loom recipe, as I will rework it later in development
  • Ported NM to BTW CE 3.1.0

Huge performance improvements, bugfixes and yet another maintenance update!

Changelog for v1.1.3:

  • Fixed: Blood Bone Blocks are now obtainable via the creative menu (thanks Flameheart)
  • Fixed: Bandages can no longer stack to 16
  • Fixed: Magic Arrows now correctly render with their own custom texture, & fixed client-side entity reflection
  • Reimplemented Skeleton behavior to melee-attack nearby players. this was an attempt to fix common exploits involving getting too close to the skeleton, causing its arrow projectile to ignore the player
  • Refactored every Creeper variant, with noticeable performance improvements to each Creeper. this includes potential changes in their explosion strength that were previously unaccounted for (eg. Fire Creeper explosions were weaker than explosions of regular Creepers - they are now equal)
  • Fixed: Snow Golem snowballs properly affect players
  • Snowballs now affect players (including the player who threw them). this means snowballs can be used on other players in Multiplayer
  • Fixed: Chain Armor crucible recipes returned 25% instead of 33% of the iron (thanks ThePirateBananaRamaN1)
  • Fixed: Steel Ore can no longer be harvested by Creeper explosions (thanks smiley)
  • Snow Golems now attack all hostile mobs. the knockback effect of snowballs can be used to pull mobs in automatically
  • Fixed: Vessel of the Dragon trade was mistakenly not overridden for many updates. It is now an Ocular of Ender (thanks MKIncendio)
  • Changed the recipe of maps: they no longer require soul urns (thanks Aristokrat)
  • Changed Blood Orb texture (thanks jespacito)
  • Large performance improvements through fixing old code

Going through old code, I realized just how many mistakes I had made years ago that compounded into a huge performance overhead. The game should perform much better now!

Hotfix for v1.1.2:

  • Fixed a bunch of missing textures (blood moon rain, dung creeper charged, steel locker GUI). the first one made blood moons pretty much unplayable.

Changelog for v1.1.2:

  • fixed: dying now removes config progress. this was admittedly a really stupid oversight
  • completed configs from previous versions will not transfer when updating for the reason above
  • changed the texture of crying obsidian / crying arena stone to 16x16
  • fixed: water during Bloodmare and Crimson config now correctly renders & animates
  • improved pickaxe double-ore compatibility with other mods. it now checks pickaxe harvest level instead of checking pickaxe item ID
  • increased hand crank hunger loss by 20%. the handcrank hunger penalty was not punishing enough provided the 2x speed of millstones
  • fixed: fixed food not overcooking in the brick oven in some cases
  • potatoes have a 1/4 chance to drop a third potato when harvested successfully
  • fixed: crude obsidian did not have the correct blast resistance. this also fixes a BTW oversight. stone of different strata now has different blast resistance
  • fixed: mining crude obsidian would drop a block of regular obsidian, which allowed for obsidian duplication
  • fixed: clay can no longer dry at night with DSN config
  • changed various textures: Obsidian Shard (piratebananaraman1), magic arrow (me)
  • fixed: squid stat multiplier required a game restart to update correctly. it now updates dynamically
  • magic arrows now have a 1.33x damage multiplier (instead of 1.0x like regular arrows). note that broadhead arrows still have 1.5x
  • fixed: bats can no longer drop their feather falling scroll, as this scroll is meant to be obtained through trades
  • fixed: Nightmare Merchant trading old items and not selling new spawn eggs (thanks flameheart)
  • fixed: ??? taunts now appear in the game over screen, instead of appearing in the chat (which was made invisible on death)
  • fixed: mushrooms would spread out of control in the Nether due to a faulty dimension check. their growth is now only sped up in the Overworld dimension

Fixes, improvements, reworked config and much more

Config Rework

All of the Nightmare Configs can now be cleared - and each clear awards a star for that config! You can show off your completions, or just have fun and set goals for yourself. Any kind of cheating, or any difficulty reduction will disqualify the config run from being able to grant you the star image

The configs that the world was created with now display. This is primarily used to keep track of config progress!

Changelog for v1.1.1

  • revamped the config system: each config now has a clear condition, which is an in-game goal that you must achieve to "beat" the config, though you can continue playing as long as you want. for example: enter hardmode, survive a bloodmoon, defeat the dragon, defeat ???... these goals are visible in the config menu. you get a gold star next to a config for completing it.
  • cement spreads 2x faster
  • reduced the XP cost for repairing tools in an anvil. it's much cheaper and scales differently depending on the tool & enchantments used
  • fixed: eclipse bow could be used to duplicate magic arrows with infinity (thanks Elle)
  • fixed: various bloodwither (???) attacks being too difficult (thanks Elle and Aristokrat)
  • fixed: horses didn't inherit the movement speed modifier of the block they are standing on when ridden by the player (thanks DMS Luigii)
  • increased sight range of zombie pigmen by 2 blocks when the player is not wearing gold armor
  • worlds created with difficulty configs enabled will keep track of their configs and display it in the world select menu
  • added a world image to the world select screen, like modern minecraft
  • using helpful configs, cheats, or other tampering will disqualify any config completions from counting. this simply means you won't get the star for completing their goals, but the config itself works as normal
  • reduced the height at which wither skeletons can spawn in the overworld (50 -> 30)
  • added baby zombies to MoreVariants. they have a 1/32 chance of spawning in place of any regular zombie, and inherit most of the zombie's abilities (including tools)
  • temporarily fixed: hopper filtering bug present in BTW CE 3.0.0
  • fixed: an issue with bloodmare displaying badly in the main menu
  • fixed: a block dispenser could grab steel ore in item form (thanks piratebananarama)
  • changed villager breeding to be more family-friendly. yes.
  • added a new config: Real Time. day and night last 12 real-world hours. hardmode automatically begins on day 3. endgame (post-wither) automatically begins on day 5. this config cannot be used to activate hardmode in such a way to clear the hardest configs. Clear Condition: Survive the first Gloom Night (Night 5)
  • a lot of work was done on the new dimension
