Hammers

Hammers are needed for crafting plates. They can also mine nine blocks at a time.

Armor & Tool Recipes

Armor is crafted with plates instead of ingots, making armor recipes twice as expensive.

Tools are crafted with rods instead of sticks. A diamond tool would need to be made with diamond rods.
