FotoGenic is a photography mod that adds a fully-realized camera system to Minecraft — every piece of gear has a real function, and every setting visibly affects your photos.
Cameras
The Polaroid Camera is a film-based instant camera. Load a film roll by pressing Q with film in your off-hand, raise it to aim, and shoot. Each frame consumes one shot of film and ejects a physical Polaroid photo item.
The Digital Camera is a modular mirrorless-style body that requires an interchangeable lens and an SD card before it can shoot. Its LCD screen doubles as a gallery — raise the camera to browse saved photos and delete or reorder them. Photos are stored as actual image files, not as NBT.
Lenses
Five lenses attach directly to the Digital Camera from the inventory:
- Zoom Lens — standard telephoto zoom
- Super Zoom Lens — 15× telephoto; focus range extends as you zoom in, up to 90 m
- Prime Lens — fixed focal length, wide aperture
- Macro Lens — extreme close-up work, f/2.8
- Fisheye Lens — ultra-wide, strongly curved field of view, f/2.8
Aperture (f-stop) is set per lens and controls depth-of-field blur rendered via a post-process shader.
Camera Settings
The Digital Camera exposes a full settings panel accessible inside the viewfinder:
- ISO (100–6400) — higher values add visible luminance grain to the saved photo
- White Balance (Auto / Daylight / Cloudy / Shade / Tungsten / Fluorescent) — shifts the per-channel color tint of the saved photo
- Shutter Speed (1/4000 s to 1 s) — speeds of 1/60 s and slower trigger a multi-frame long-exposure capture, blending motion blur and light trails into the final image
- EV Compensation (−3.0 to +3.0) — multiplies brightness in the saved photo
- Flash — places a real light source in front of the lens for the capture frame, then removes it
SD Cards
SD cards come in a base tier and an upgraded iron tier with higher storage capacity. They can be dyed any of the 16 vanilla colors and renamed. Insert a card by pressing Q with it in your off-hand; eject with Sneak+Q.
Tripod
Mount any camera on a tripod block, then right-click to look through its viewfinder. Panning the camera decouples from the player — your character stays still while the lens tracks your mouse. Right-click to lock the framing; left-click to take a photo from the tripod's exact point of view.
All camera settings (ISO, WB, shutter, EV, flash, aperture, DOF) apply identically to tripod shots, including long exposure. The tripod can also be armed for remote selfie shots without occupying the viewfinder.
Ring Light
A two-block-tall studio ring light with adjustable brightness (0–15). Useful for consistent controlled lighting when shooting on the tripod.
Computer
A placeable in-game computer with a functional desktop UI: a gallery app to browse and view photos from an inserted SD card, a photo editor, a file manager, and a print app that sends jobs to a connected Printer block.
Printer
Load blank photo paper and print physical photo prints from the computer's print app. Printed photos can be placed in the world as framed displays.
In-World Display
Both Polaroid photos and printed photo prints can be placed as blocks and render their actual captured image in the world.

1.0.0Релиз26.1.2 · 1 июля 2026 г.
1.0.0 — Full Frame
Added
- Multiplayer photo sharing. Photos now upload to the server when taken and are fetched on demand by other players, so everyone can see each other's shots, prints and wall-hung photos — not just the photographer. Image bytes are stored per-world and streamed in chunks.
Changed
- Release housekeeping: disabled the dev-only test-mob dependency, tidied the mod metadata
(logo, credits), and added an MIT
LICENSE. - JEI documentation now covers the newer content: info pages for the Photo Album, Camera Recharge Station, and Master Photographer Trophy, and the Digital Camera's page now explains its battery and the two item bars.
- The Photo Album plays a soft page-turn sound when you flip between spreads.
Notes
- 1.0.0 — the first full release. The mod is mechanically complete; the remaining work before wider distribution is final artwork and broader playtesting (especially the new multiplayer photo sharing).

0.8.0 — Field Work
Added
Consumable trades
- The Camera Technician now always stocks film, photo paper, and blank SD cards, so early-game supplies aren't a grind.
Wanted creature
- The technician posts a daily "wanted" creature — sell a photo of it for a bonus payout. The current target is shown each time you make a sale.
More advancements
- Six new entries in the Photography tab: First Sale, Bounty Hunter (sell the wanted creature), Gotta Snap 'Em All (100% dex), Night Owl (night photo), Deep Dive (underwater photo), and Big Game (photograph a boss).
Best-shot photo of record
- A creature's photo of record now keeps your best-framed shot — scored by how centred and how close the creature was in frame — instead of simply the most recent one.

0.7.0 — Field Notes Update
Added
Photo metadata ("EXIF")
- Every photo now records where and when it was taken — the biome, the in-game day and clock time, and the block coordinates of the photographer — stamped at the moment of capture (for both hand-held and tripod shots).
- A photo's tooltip now shows that metadata under its date: biome name,
X / Y / Z, andDay N · HH:mm. - Edited copies made in the computer's Editor carry the original capture metadata forward.
- Photos taken before this update simply show no metadata (nothing breaks).
Photography advancements
- A new "Photography" advancement tab, unlocked by taking your first photo:
- First Photo — take a photograph with any camera.
- Golden Hour — take a photo at dawn or dusk.
- Say Cheese! — photograph a hostile mob mid-attack.
- Field Researcher — catalogue 25 creatures in your Journey Guide.
Capture polish
- A small sparkle at the lens when a photo lands (when it's saved or a film shot finishes developing), with a faint blink for delayed film develops.
Journey Guide
- A search bar above the creature list — click it and type to filter the catalogue by name.
Server config
- New
fotogenic-common.tomloptions for server owners: the capture range (how close a creature must be to be catalogued), the XP rewards for new creatures / baby variants / trade milestones, and the Photo Hut spawn weight in plains villages (0 disables it).
Sell photos for value
- Right-click the Camera Technician with a photo in hand to sell it for XP and iron salvage. The payout scales with the photographed creature's rarity (passive < hostile < boss/rare) and gets a bonus if you've already catalogued it — a money loop that rewards shooting even after the dex is full.
- Photos now quietly record the main creature in frame at capture, which drives the scoring.
More technician trades
- The technician now also sells lenses (Prime, Zoom, Macro, Fisheye, Super-Zoom), unlocked at higher Journey Guide discovery counts (30 / 40 / 55 / 65 / 85) and priced in glass + salvage.
Photo of record
- Photographing a creature you've catalogued now files that shot as its "photo of record" — your Journey Guide entry shows your own best photo of the creature in place of the generic model, turning the dex into a personal portfolio. The latest shot of each creature wins.
Completion reward
- Cataloguing every creature awards the Master Photographer Trophy, a one-of-a-kind keepsake item (with a placeholder texture for now).
Enlarger
- The Enlarger now has a Save button (and Ctrl+S) that saves the framed crop — including the chosen aspect ratio — back onto the card as a new photo, like the Editor's Save As, instead of only printing it. The crop is non-destructive, so the original photo is untouched.
Photo Album
- A craftable Photo Album (book + leather + photo paper) that stores up to 128 photos so loose prints stop cluttering chests. Right-click to open a leather two-page spread showing two photos at a time, each in a white mat with a drop shadow and translucent tape across its corners.
- Collect loose photos vacuums every photo from your inventory into the album; shift-click a photo to peel it back out as an item. Flip pages with the ← → glyphs or the arrow/strafe keys.
Camera battery & recharge station
- The Digital Camera now runs on a battery — 50 shots before it goes flat and refuses to capture. A second bar on the camera item (just above the blue SD-card bar) shows the charge, running red → green and hiding when full.
- The Camera Recharge Station now opens a simple one-slot dock: drop a digital camera in and it trickle-charges 1 shot every 3 seconds up to full, showing a live battery readout. (Still the Camera Technician's job site too.)
Fixed
- The Polaroid Camera now confirms its flash toggle on the action bar ("Flash: On" / "Flash: Off") — it has no viewfinder indicator like the digital camera, so the toggle was previously silent.
- Removed a duplicate Tripod information page in JEI (the tripod showed two identical info entries).

Changelog
All notable changes to FotoGenic are documented here. This update introduces the Journey Guide and a full creature-photography progression built on top of it.
0.6.0 — The Journey Guide Update
Added
Journey Guide (creature catalogue)
- Journey Guide — a field-catalogue book item. Photograph creatures to fill it in, Pokédex-style.
- Discoveries are stored per player and persist through death, so your catalogue is permanent.
- Capture detection — when you take a photo with any camera, living mobs inside the viewfinder cone (within 16 blocks, with a clear line of sight) are catalogued. You must be carrying the guide. One new creature is logged per photo (a random undiscovered one in frame).
- Guide screen — a scrollable list of every living-mob type (shown as
???until found), with:- a scrollbar with click-to-jump,
- an All / Passive / Hostile filter,
- a detail panel showing the live mob model, temperament, health, and a description,
- a trade-progress bar showing how close you are to the next Camera Technician part unlock.
- 41 hand-written creature blurbs (cows, wolves, the Ender Dragon, villagers, golems, Nether mobs, warden, and more), with a generic fallback for everything else — including modded mobs.
- Baby variants — photographing a baby catalogues its baby form as a separate collectible, shown in the creature's detail panel.
- Rewards for photography — +6 XP for each new creature, +3 for a new baby variant, and a +20 XP bonus when you reach a trade milestone.
- Milestone pop-up — crossing a discovery threshold shows a "new technician trade unlocked" message with a level-up chime.
- Admin command —
/fotogenic guide add|remove *or<creature>, plusadd|remove baby *orbaby <creature>(operator only).
Camera Technician & progression
- Camera Recharge Station block — the Camera Technician's job site (now craftable: iron + redstone
- copper block).
- Camera Technician villager profession — sells the Journey Guide and, as your catalogue grows, the parts to build the digital camera and upgrade the computer.
- 8 new parts, each unlocked at a Journey Guide discovery milestone:
- Camera parts — Camera Body (10), Image Sensor (20), Shutter Assembly (35), Lens Mount (50). Craft all four together to assemble the Digital Camera.
- Computer parts — SD Controller (5), Memory Bus (25), Cache Module (45), Flash Array (75). Used to unlock the computer's SD-card slots.
- Discovery-gated trades — the technician only offers a part once you've catalogued enough creatures; each player sees the set that matches their own progress.
Computer SD-card slots
- Computers now start with 1 card slot and unlock up to 5.
- New "SD Cards" desktop app — shows each slot, the materials needed for the next one, and an Unlock button (free in Creative).
- The unlocked-slot count is saved on the dropped computer when broken and shown in its tooltip, and restored when replaced.
Compatibility
- Jade integration — look-at tooltips for the computer (unlocked slots), tripod (docked camera), printer (paper / finished print), and ring light (brightness & facing).
- JEI — information pages explaining what the camera and computer parts are used for (press
Uon an SD Controller to see it upgrades a computer slot).
World generation
- Photo Hut — a small building that generates in plains villages, complete with a Camera Technician and a recharge station inside.
Changed
- Digital Camera recipe — now assembled from the four camera parts instead of being craftable from raw materials, so the Polaroid carries the early game.
- SD-card slot upgrades now cost the matching computer part (plus redstone) rather than diamonds.
- Technician trades use no emeralds — the Journey Guide costs a book + 12 iron, and parts cost tech salvage (copper, iron, redstone, amethyst, gold, a diamond).
- The Camera Technician is pinned to Master level (the tier is cosmetic here — trades are gated by discoveries, not by villager level).
- All blocks (computer, printer, ring light, tripod, recharge station) now require a wooden pickaxe or better to drop. The wall-hung Polaroid stays hand-breakable.
Fixed
- The catalogue now includes villagers, iron golems, and snow golems (mobs that Minecraft
internally files under the
MISCcategory). - Fixed the Camera Technician shaking its head with no trades — its offers are now built directly on interaction, so being pinned to a high level no longer wipes the Journey Guide trade.
- SD-slot unlocks now reflect immediately in the app (optimistic update + a server confirmation packet) instead of only after reopening the computer.
