Tired of mining for all your resources? What if fishing was actually useful? Look no further than Fish Are Cool!
Fish Are Cool is a mod that makes fishing both useful and rewarding. Adding 11 new fish, new water type, and a new way to get your usually mined resources. Sit back, throw out a line, and reel in all these new fish.
- MINING WATER -![]()
Base water for catching all new fish. Can be crafted by surrounding a water bucket with a bunch of mined resources. Mining Water is infinite and can be caught out of mining water. This allows you to create nice setups with ponds and such.
- FISH -![]()
11 unique fish matching mined resources. When cooked in a smoker, you can then craft them into the respectful resource or consume the cooked fish for a small buff. Each fish giving a unique buff and resource.
Can you catch them all? :)
Supported Versions: 1.18.2/1.19.2/1.19.3

What's new
FishAreCool 1.0.0 for Minecraft 1.21.1
The mod has been rebuilt from the ground up for Minecraft 1.21.1 and now runs on both Fabric and NeoForge from a single codebase (Architectury).
Mining water now spawns in the world
The crafted Mining Water Bucket is gone — mining water is a resource you find:
- Surface pools dot every overworld biome. Fish them for the everyday catch: iron, copper, coal, redstone, lapis and gold fish.
- Glowing pools hide underground (y 30 down to -54), lighting up caves with a cyan shimmer. They hold the treasure: diamond, amethyst, emerald, lapis and gold fish.
- Nether pools are the rarest find - yes, water, in the Nether. Orange, glowing, and the only place to catch quartz, gold and ancient debris fish.
Pools run dry
Every pool shares one stock of fish across its connected water. Bigger pools hold more, on a sliding scale — the first blocks are the richest, so an 8-block pond holds 23 catches while a giant lake still won't last forever. When the stock runs out the whole pool fizzes into plain water.
Watch the particles: a busy sparkle means a full pool, a thin one means it's fading, and smoke means it's nearly done. Surface pools shed enchantment glyphs, glowing pools shed glow motes, nether pools burn with flames.
Scoop pools up with a bucket and carry them home — a glowing pond at your base grants Haste while you stand in it, and nether water keeps you fireproof. (Nether water can't be re-placed inside the Nether — it evaporates like any water there, so fish it where it spawns or haul it to the overworld.)
New fishing rod enchantments
Found in the enchanting table and on villager trades:
- Vein Fishing I–II — every catch also reels one fish out of every mining water body near your bobber (18/24 block range, up to 8 pools), draining each of them. Works even when casting in plain water.
- Prospector's Luck I–III — 25% chance per level to strike it rich and double your catch.
- Preservation I–II — 25% chance per level that a catch doesn't drain the pool at all.
Advancements
A new Strange Waters advancement tab with six to earn, from your first step into mining water to the coveted Holy Carp! challenge.
Commands
/findminingwater [radius](op) — reports the nearest pool of each kind with clickable teleport coordinates.
Odds and ends
- Everything lives in a new Fish Are Cool creative tab.
- All recipes updated for 1.21.1 (cooked fish still smelt back into their resources).
