You can craft chainmail armor using chains.

Isn't chainmail armor more expensive than iron armor with these recipes?

By default, crafting chainmail armor directly from chains costs more iron than standard iron armor.

To fix this balance, download Craft More Chains, a mod/datapack that gives you 2 chains from the chain recipe instead of 1. This makes chainmail armor cheaper than iron armor.

Comparison between Iron Armor and Chainmail armor with Craft More Chains:

So crafting a full set of iron armor costs 24 iron ingots, while a full set of chainmail armor costs only 15 iron ingots, which is a reasonable price.
