You can use it on servers without any server-side changes.

If doing a challenge, you'll find useful to toggle some hidden F3 settings via the F3+F6 menu, you can see what biome you're in, position, view angle (yaw/pitch), what block/entity/fluid you're currently seeing. Also enable directional audio and use headphones!
