Be My Sword is a Minecraft mod inspired by Guard Villagers, but expanded and redesigned to better fit a more interactive and RPG-like experience.

The mod introduces human guardians to Minecraft villages that function as recruitable personal bodyguards. Recruit them with a Golden Apple, manage their equipment and inventory, and watch them grow stronger through combat.

Key Features

  • Leveling system — guardians start at Level 1 (20 HP) and grow up to Level 10, with stats (health, attack, armor, speed) and inventory capacity scaling as they level up.
  • Full equipment & inventory management — armor, main hand, offhand, and a leveled inventory of items/potions, managed through a dedicated GUI.
  • Combat AI — guardians proactively fight nearby monsters once tamed, block hits with a shield if equipped, switch to bow or (from level 5+) thrown tridents depending on what's in their hand.
  • Potion-savvy in combat — guardians drink Strength/Speed/Regeneration potions from their own inventory when a fight starts, eat food to heal, and throw Regeneration splash potions at wounded allies.
  • Dialogue system — guardians talk to you, tame or not.
  • Natural village spawning, plus a dedicated guardian_house structure that can generate in villages.
  • Reproduction using Glistering Melon Slices.
  • Follower behavior with a sit/follow toggle, and they hold still while you manage their inventory so you don't have to chase them.
  • Real player skins — each guardian gets a random skin (male/female) instead of a generic reskinned mob.

Coming Soon (Version 3 roadmap)

  • Class system for guardians, giving each one a distinct combat/support role instead of one-size-fits-all stats.
  • Deeper dialogue system, building on the current one with more context and personality.
  • Visual feedback improvements — clearer in-world indicators of what a guardian is doing at any given moment (eating, drinking a potion, about to attack, following, etc.), so you don't have to guess from the animation alone.
  • Attribute balance pass across the level 1–10 curve.

Known Issues

  • Occasional delayed guardian spawn right after loading a world.
  • Rare input stickiness.

Changelog — Be My Sword v2.0.0

New:

  • Guardian dialogue system.
  • Shield blocking (chance scales from 5% at level 1 up to 25% at max level).
  • Max level cap (10) for the guardian: caps stat growth (HP, attack, armor, speed).
  • Combat and healing potions: the guardian drinks Strength/Speed/Regeneration potions from its inventory when entering combat, eats food to heal itself, and throws splash Regeneration potions at wounded allies.
  • The guardian now stays still while you have its inventory open — if you walk more than 8 blocks away it closes on its own (like a chest), and only then does it follow you again.
  • Brief pause after killing something instead of immediately running off to whatever's next.
  • More visible eating particles, and villager-style particles when drinking potions.
  • The ATK stat shown in the GUI now properly syncs to the client.

Fixes:

  • Crash when the guardian's inventory grew while its GUI was open.
  • The guardian's inventory is never resized anymore (always created at max size) — removed a source of desync-related crashes.
  • Potions can no longer be interrupted mid-drink; an ally now holds still when hit by a thrown potion instead of accidentally dodging it.
  • Food/potions now stay visible in hand for the whole animation instead of just a flash.
  • Fixed the guardian sometimes still moving while its inventory was open despite being "frozen" — movement is now forcibly stopped every tick while frozen.

🛡️ Be My Sword ⚔️ Features (Version 1)

  • Guardians spawn naturally in villages (2–4 per village)
  • Start at Level 1 with 20 health
  • Can be recruited using Golden Apples (33% success chance per attempt)

Have their own inventory system, including:

  • Health
  • Level & experience bar
  • Equipment slots (armor, weapons, shields)

Gain experience by killing enemies and level up over time

Stats such as health, strength, speed, and inventory capacity scale with level

Can eat food from their inventory when not in combat

Will follow the player by default

Use Ctrl + Right Click to toggle stay/follow behavior

Can reproduce using Golden Melons (only between male and female guardians)

🧠 AI Behavior

Guardians are designed to act as smart companions:

Assist in combat when engaged

Grow stronger through experience

Manage their own survival by eating when needed

⚠️ Known Issues

Guardians may not appear immediately after world load (reload the world to fix)

Right-click input may remain “stuck” after opening their menu

Guardians do not attack until the player has taken damage

Display detailed stats in the guardian menu

Add custom houses for guardians in villages
