[Give Feedback and Suggestions]
Roaring Rivers has concluded with its final part: Shocking Snap! If you have any feedback, please let me know via the Google Form or the Discord. For now, I will be taking a break from adding new content and will be focused more on balance changes and bug fixes based on feedback. Please note that the datapack isn't over and new content will eventually arrive.
Blue Depths transforms Minecraft’s oceans AND rivers into a living, breathing ecosystem, providing new creatures that Minecraft normally wouldn’t add.
Blue Depths is meant for players who want a deeper ocean experience without sacrificing performance. Players can conquer these new creatures and even raise them as their own, experiencing their life cycles.
Along with that, the datapack also adds a new difficult boss to the game, The Nameless Depth, a being lost to time and forgotten by the ocean.
An in-game guidebook can be crafted using a book and salmon, and provides a much better explanation of all the features.
Compatibility
- Full compatible with multiplayer
- Datapacks
- Made compatible with Deep Blue: Ocean Survival by it's creator FunkyToc
- Should be compatible with most other datapacks as well.
What Blue Depths adds:
Mobs:
Blue Depths adds a total of 12 new mobs to Minecraft. There are 3 new ocean/salt water creatures, 7 new river/fresh water creatures, and one that spawns in both water types. Along with that, certain creatures (like the box jellyfish) have different variants and quite a few have varying life cycles for when players wish to raise their own creatures.
Oceans:
- Great White Sharks
- A massive ocean predator, the king of the sea. Will mostly stay neutral unless provoked, but there is a stalker variant that will attack players. Can be raised from a pup to a full adult!
- Tuna
- The chicken of the sea, provides a sustainable source of food for the player. It can be farmed via growing it through it's various life cycles
- Orca
- Some could say these are the real "kings of the sea." Either way, orcas are neutral mobs unless provoked. New features are planned for these guys for the future.
- Box Jellyfish
- Environmental hazards! Be careful when approaching these guys, getting too close will give you a nasty sting. There are multiple colored variants, including a very rare pink one. You can raise box jellies from polyp to fully mature medusa!
Rivers
- Bluegill
- Adds more variety and a new food source for players. The bluegigi can also be scooped up as a pet using a water bucket
- Largemouth Bass
- Adds more ambience to rivers and more food options for the player. Like the bluegill, it can also be scooped up in a bucket.
- Archerfish
- These little guys may look like any ordinary fish, but if caught off guard, they can spit at you, knocking you back. They will also kill any insect creatures nearby using it's spit attack
- Sturgeon
- A rare river fish that can drop sturgeon scute, which can be used to make the Armorbite, a powerful item that gives resistance to the player
- Electric Eels
- Be careful when approaching these guys. If they receive damage they will emit an electric pulse damaging both you and any other mob nearby. They can be used to craft the Electrode, which can be used to power redstone
- Crocodiles
- Dangerous predators that will actively hunt the player. Don't underestimate them just because of their slow movement, they can lunge at you and deal devastating damage. If killed, they can drop material to craft Crocodile Armor.
Others:
- Bull Sharks
- A more aggressive and territorial shark that can spawn in rivers and lukewarm oceans.
- Catfish
- Bottom dwelling fish. Not only do they spawn in rivers, but also in mangrove swamps. Although they aren't very rare, they can be hidden inside seagrass or by blending in with dirt.
Blocks:
Deep Blue Grill
- A custom block used for cooking and processing certain drops from the new mobs
- Can be used to cook tuna fillet and catfish
- Also used for processing nematocyst gel to slime balls and sturgeon scute
Marine Workbench
- Used to craft custom items added by Blue Depths such as Crocodile Amor and the Electrode Block!
Electrode
- A special block that can be used to activate redstone if an electric eel is within a certain distance of the block!
The Nameless Catalyst
- A new ritual block used to summon the boss, an entity forgotten by time and hidden away by the ocean
- Place certain drops from each of the new mobs to activate it
- Certain restrictions apply
Boss:
The Nameless Depth
- A new underwater boss that rivals most Minecraft bosses in difficulty
- Launches custom attacks, causing chaos on the battlefield
- Forces player submergence
- Scales stats and attack frequency based on player count
- Upon death, it will drop a new powerful weapon for the player(s) to wield
To begin your journey:

Roaring Rivers Part 2: Shocking Snap (v1.2.0)
The last part of the river update, Roaring Rivers Part 2: Shocking Snap, is now live. The update took longer than expected, with an even larger gap the initial release and part 1 of Roaring Rivers. This was due to the development of the Blue Depths Wiki and the fact that Part 2 ended up being much larger than I expected. The final part of Roaring Rivers offers new mobs, blocks, armor, and a complete rework of the Deep Blue Grill. Below gives a list of everything offered in 1.2.0:
Mobs
- Bluegill
- Spawns exclusively in rivers
- Another common ambient fish to add more variety to rivers
- Can be used as a new food source
- Electric Eel
- Spawns exclusively in rivers
- Bottom dwelling fish that will defend itself with an electric pulse againsts attacks with a powerful Electric Pulse!
- Can be used as a new food source, but be careful, it's got a little kick in it's taste!
- Important for the new Electrode Block
- Crocodile
- Spawns exclusively in rivers
- Dangerous river predator that will attack and lunge at players
- Can drop special leather and teeth useful in crafting the Crocodile Armor
- Can be hatched by an egg and raised by players
Blocks
- Marine Workbench
- A brand new utility block that is used to craft the electrode and crocodile armor
- Will also be used for crafting items added in future updates
- Electrode
- A brand new redstone utility block
- Use electric eel to craft and interact with the block
- If an electric eel interacts with the block, it will activate any redstone connected to it
Armor
You can use the Marine Workbench to craft the new crocodile armor using crocodile leather and teeth. This armor provides protection that sits between chainmail/gold and iron armor, and has the ability to damage anything that attacks you as well.
Major Deep Blue Grill Rework
The Deep Blue Grill has received a major glowup in terms of it's functionality. Before whenever you wanted to cook or process food or items in the grill, you were limited to how much you could cook at a time, for example when cooking food you were limited to cooking in batches of 1, 8, 16, or 64. That limitation no longer exists. Now players can insert any amount of items with the fuel source, the grill will cook the food/items dynamically, you no longer need to worry putting in a specific number of items. For more information check out the wiki or the in-game guidebook.
QOL and Technical Changes
- Spawn rates: some Blue Depths mobs have been added to spawn pools, all that this means is that when a pool is spawned, only one mob from that pool will spawn, and each mob in the pool has a higher priority than others to spawn. What this basically means is that some mobs will spawn less frequently to ensure that there isn't lag from too many mobs. Below lists the pools along with which mobs are in the pool:
- Predator pool (Rivers only)
- Crocodile
- Bull Shark
- Common Fish pool (Rivers only)
- Bluegill
- Largemouth Bass
- Predator pool (Rivers only)
- Guide Book
- Due to more and more mobs being added, new crafting recipes, and no longer needing some recipes due to the grill rework, the in-game guidebook has been changed and condensed to only include breeding instructions and crafting recipes for most mobs. For more details on mob behavior, biome exclusivity, etc. check out the wiki.
- Commands
- Summon Command: Added the new mobs to the summon command
- Display command:
- Added the new mobs to the display command
- Removed the kill_display command option, it has been replaced with two new command options:
- kill_closest: destroys the closest model display
- kill_all: destroys all models in generate chunks
- New Command: destroy
- You can now use the new destroy command to destroy Blue Depths mobs and blocks
- You can simply use: /function blue_depths:destroy/... and use the autofill options to decide which mobs or blocks you want to destroy.
- More details found on the wiki.
- Easter Egg: because of the rework of some systems, one of the easter eggs had to be reworked in how to "get" the easter egg.
Important Note
Unfortunately, because of some technical changes made during the update, 1.21.9 and 1.21.10 support had to be dropped. I apologize for any inconveniece this may cause, but Roaring Rivers Part 1 and below are the only versions that will be available for these versions of the game.

4th of July Small Patch and Compatibility with 26.2 (v1.1.1)
News
Sorry for going dark for a bit, a lot of stuff has been going on behind the scenes. I haven't even gotten started on the development of Part 2 for Roaring Rivers. However, I am not without reason, I've actually been spending the development time I normally would have on the actual update towards making The Official Blue Depths Wiki from scratch, and filling it up with as much detail as possible with everything about the datapack's mechanics, mobs, items, boss, etc. It's been live for a few days as of me posting this small patch, but I wanted to leave it as a note here on the changelog because it is very important, especially for the future of the datapack. So please check it out.
I do have good news though, with the release of this patch and the completion of the Blue Depths Wiki (with some minor fixes I need to make for making it work better on mobile) Part 2 of Roaring Rivers is the next thing on the list, and I will be starting it immediately. In the meantime, enjoy this small patch/compatibility update for 26.2.
Don't forget to check out the Blue Depths Wiki
Compatibility with 26.2
Blue Depths now fully works for Minecraft 26.2 and should have no issues. However, if there are issue please let me know here.
QOL Changes
- Welcome message modified to look cleaner and add a reference to the Blue Depths Wiki
- Quick Start section of the guide book now also references the Blue Depths Wiki
Bug Fixes
- Fixed a bug where the catfish would not spawn in Mangrove Swamps.
