Overview

Better Melon (BM) enhances the usage experience and fun value of melons in Minecraft by improving the melon eating experience, adding melon variants and a dedicated melon-cutting tool, introducing matching slabs, stairs, and carved melon decorative blocks for the different variants, as well as including other melon-related items.

Development inspiration: The vanilla melon experience is underwhelming – its farming process is complicated, but a single melon slice restores very little hunger. Generally, melons are only used as a temporary food source in jungle starts during the early game, and are almost never used in the late game. Therefore, this mod hopes these changes will allow melons to go beyond their role as a mere emergency food, becoming a commonly used element for players in the mid-to-late game thanks to their diverse functionality and decorative value.

Eating Features

Right-click to Eat

  • You can right-click a melon block or a partially eaten block to eat it directly, consuming one quarter each time. The block's appearance changes accordingly.
  • Glistering melon, enchanted melon, and ender melon can be eaten even when the hunger bar is full.
  • Various melon slabs and stairs also support right-click eating.

Melon Variants

The mod adds five melon variants – yellow melon, unripe melon, glistering melon, and enchanted melon.

  • A cut melon block can be eaten directly while held, with the same effect as eating it after placing it down.
  • A Quarter Melon Part has an eating time of only 16 game ticks, half that of normal food, making it suitable as portable food.
  • Some melon variants grant special effects when eaten:
    • Eating unripe melon has a chance to inflict Hunger.
    • Eating glistering melon additionally restores health.
    • Eating enchanted melon restores health and grants a random beneficial potion effect.
    • Eating ender melon grants the "Ender Resonance" effect, providing teleportation ability and immunity to projectiles and Levitation, but causing a fear of water and rain.

Decorative Melon Blocks

  • Slabs and stairs corresponding to the four melon types are added, and they can be waxed with honeycomb to prevent accidental eating.
  • Right-clicking a melon, unripe melon, or yellow melon block with shears creates a carved melon; right-clicking a glistering melon or enchanted melon block with shears creates a carved glistering melon; right-clicking an ender melon block with shears creates a carved ender melon.
  • Right-clicking a carved melon with a light source block such as a torch, glowstone, or copper lantern in hand yields various melon lanterns with light sources.
  • Carved melons can be crafted with redstone lamps and various copper bulbs to create corresponding melon lanterns with redstone lights/copper bulbs.

Special Elements

Huaqiang Melon Knife

  • The mod adds a tool, the Huaqiang Melon Knife, which can be used to cut melons and has a chance to inflict a bleeding effect when attacking entities.
  • Exclusive enchantment "Unguaranteed Ripe": Using Unguaranteed Ripe I to cut a normal melon has a 50% chance to yield an unripe melon; Unguaranteed Ripe II increases this to 100%. This is the only way to obtain unripe melons and does not affect normal farming.
  • Interacting with various melons using the melon knife can also unlock four advancements: "Is the rind of your melon made of gold, or is the flesh?", "Let me ask YOU—you sure this melon’s ripe?", "Are you looking for trouble on purpose, huh?!", "You dare chop my melon, do you?"

Melon Drinks

  • Each melon can be brewed into a corresponding drink; drinking some melon drinks grants special effects.
  • Brewing a glistering melon with a honey bottle yields Glistering Melon Drink; then brewing that with an enchanted melon produces Enchanted Melon Drink, which grants multiple beneficial effects and may trigger an easter egg.
  • Brewing Unripe Melon Drink with a fermented spider eye yields Joyful Melon Drink, which grants a random Suspicious Stew potion effect (possibly negative).
  • Ender melon can be brewed with an Awkward Potion to create a Potion of Ender Resonance.

Armor

  • Right-click a "Half Melon Part" block with shears in your main hand to hollow out the flesh and obtain a melon rind.
  • Right-click an empty carved melon with shears in your main hand to obtain the corresponding carved melon helmet.
  • The obtained melon rind and carved melon helmet can be worn on the head, providing slightly more armor than a leather helmet.

Pumpkin

  • The mod adds decorative blocks such as pumpkin blocks, pumpkin slabs, and pumpkin stairs.
  • Pumpkin blocks can be cut using the Huaqiang Melon Knife.
  • Combining a pumpkin pizza base with melon slices, an egg, and milk allows you to craft pizza. Pizza can be placed on the ground and eaten by right-clicking, consuming one quarter each time.
  • Arranging the crafting recipe upside down crafts "Azzip", which functions identically to pizza.

Common

  • The Huaqiang Melon Knife now gains the ability to cut pumpkins.

Pumpkin Pizza

  • Added raw pumpkin pizza, crafted from wheat and pumpkin blocks.
  • Added pumpkin pizza base, obtained by smelting raw pumpkin pizza in a furnace.
  • Added placeable pizza, which can be eaten four times, each bite consuming one quarter. It can be eaten even when hunger is full, restoring 4 hunger points and 8 saturation points per bite.

  • Optimized the drop logic for Melon Blocks when destroyed.

Enchanted Melon

  • Doubled the chance for Enchanted Melon Slices to appear in Ruined Portal loot chests.
  • Changed the registry name of Enchanted Melon Slice from qa_better_melon:qa_golden_melon to qa_better_melon:enchanted_melon_slice (Note Old Enchanted Melon Slices will disappear after upgrading. It is recommended to craft them into Enchanted Melons before updating the mod).
  • Entities falling onto an Enchanted Melon now also trigger the melon shimmer effect.
  • Enchanted Melons and Waxed Enchanted Melons now also trigger the shimmer effect when destroyed by explosions.

Ender Melon

  • The icon for the post-teleport cooldown state in Ender Resonance has been changed.
  • The trigger condition for automatic random teleport in Ender Resonance has been changed from being in water or rain to taking any damage.
  • After teleporting upon taking damage in Ender Resonance, the cooldown before it can trigger again is reduced to 40 game ticks.

Achievements

  • Removed all annual limited achievements.
  • Removed the achievement for collecting all Carved Melons.
  • Kept 3 achievements related to total melons eaten, granted when the player has eaten a total of 100, 1000, and 5686 melons respectively.
  • The command to check melon count has been changed from /meloncount to /better_melon show_melon_count.

  • Enchanted Melon Slabs do not emit light.

  • Refactored the underlying logic for right-click eating watermelon. The event no longer listens via the player right-click bus, with significant performance improvements expected.

Melon Blocks

  • Melon items no longer display a remaining portion in the inventory.
  • Using shears to carve a melon block now only drops one melon seed or ender melon seed.
  • Carving an unripe melon block with shears no longer drops seeds.
  • Carving a glistering melon block or enchanted melon block with shears no longer drops gold nuggets.

Melon Lanterns

  • Carved Melon With Redstone Lamp Can now only be obtained via crafting. When broken after being crafted, it will always drop itself.
  • Carved melon lanterns containing torches, soul torches, lanterns, soul lanterns, shroomlights, sea lanterns, and three types of froglights are now combined into a single block, with internal models switched through block states.
  • When broken, the combined block always drops a carved melon and the contained light source.
  • Carved melon lanterns containing soul torches or soul lanterns now consistently emit a light level of 15.
  • Carved melon lanterns with the four copper bulb variants now always drop themselves when broken, and can be crafted directly using a carved melon lantern, redstone dust, and the copper bulb ingredients in versions prior to 1.21.
  • Optimized the state switching logic for carved melon lanterns with the four copper bulb variants.
  • Redstone torches can no longer be placed into carved wmelon lanterns.

Ender Melon

  • The Ender Potion effect applied by Ender Melons can now be cleared by drinking milk.

Removal

  • Removed the two melon variants added in version 26.0.0-alpha: Sculk Melon and Jala Melon.

Technical

  • Removed some tags.
  • Added tag qa_better_melon:melon_blocks, qa_better_melon:melon_lights, qa_better_melon:melon_lights_copperbulb, qa_better_melon:melon_parts, qa_better_melon:melon_stairs.

Fixes

  • Hunger and saturation values granted when eating unripe melons and regular melons were incorrect.
