Chance for a single apple to drop from a leaf block:

|---|---|---|
| Normal Breaking or Decay | 0.5% | 0.7% |
| Fortune I | 0.556% | 1% |
| Fortune II | 0.625% | 1.5% |
| Fortune III | 0.833% | 3% |
Note that this applies to both oak and dark oak leaves.
This increase of odds doesn't seem like much but it makes a big difference. You can actually get a substantial amount of apples in a reasonable amount of time. This means that you'll no longer feel the need to kidnap and breed villagers just to get a steady supply of apples.
